Stockholm to Install Electric Boat Charging Stations

The charging stations will be installed at five popular locations on the Swedish archipelago to start.

Candela, the Swedish electric boat manufacturer, has teamed with solar energy supplier Nordsol to roll out what it describes as the “world’s first charging network” for electric boats.

Five Locations

The new charging posts will be installed in the Stockholm archipelago and will initially be free. Starting in the spring and winter of 2021, Candela and Nordsol will install charging points at five locations in Sweden — Strömma, Saltsjöbaden, Sandhamn, Fjäderholmarna, and Utö harbour.

“Our goal is to speed up the transition to fossil-free boats on the lake,” Mikael Mahlberg, Candela’s communications manager, said. “With this investment, we will make it possible to go anywhere in the Stockholm archipelago on clean electricity.” Candela and Nordsol’s charging network will initially consist of a number of pre-approved charging points that will be gradually be expanded.

Each station will have multiple charging posts to serve a fleet of electrically powered boats.

Available Power

Nordsol specializes in solar energy in the archipelago and the long-term plan is to contribute with solar cells where a stable electricity supply doesn’t exist.

“Nordsol Energi’s goal is to provide Sweden with renewable energy through solar energy,” said Marcus Robell, CEO of Nordsol and parent company Petrobell. “Collaborating with Candela and Sweden’s best sea stations to bring out the world’s first charging infrastructure for electric boats therefore feels like a natural next step.”

Foiling Runabout

Candela’s first electric model, the Candela 7, is a foiling boat powered by an electric engine. The driver can find the charging points via the chart on the 12” helm screen or in the Candela app. The battery pack in Candela Seven is rated at 40 kilowatt-hours and it gives the boat a range of 50 nautical miles. Candela says the battery can be the boat’s built-in 9.9kW charger can fully re-charge a battery to 100% in four hours.

The Candela 7 is the first electrically powered foiling bowrider.
