Talos Lightning Detection Completes Final Installation for Sovereign Boat Club
Talos, a Lightning Detection Systems manufacturer, has completed the final installation of one of its products for the Sovereign Boat Club, BoatTEST’s sister company.
The installation was completed on an Everglades 235CC. It joins a Pursuit DC266 and two Regal 33 SAVs as the only boats in a shared-ownership program to be equipped with lightning detection.
SBC boats are premium-level vessels and can venture as far as 100 miles (160.93 km) offshore. This is outside of most cellular coverage so an app on a smartphone will not work.
Early Warning
Talos offers portable and permanently installed lightning detection systems that use the same technology as meteorological forecasters to track storms. When lightning is 25 miles away, it flashes green and sounds a single audio alert. If it’s 16 miles away, the color switches to blue and two beeps are heard. Finally, when lightning strikes 6 miles away, it flashes red and sounds three beeps.
Just as stop signs are the same shape worldwide, Talos flashes at different intervals, so people who speak any language can determine how far away a lightning strike is.
The small receiver needs to be installed as far from onboard electronics as possible and the system runs off 12 volts with minimal draw. Two types of flashing indicators are available. One requires drilling a small hole (similar to an ignition module) in the dash. The other can replace a blank rocker switch in a boat’s dash.
An owner with basic mechanical skills should be able to install Talos on a boat or the company can arrange with a local service center.
