Vessel Vanguard
Helps You Keep Your Boat Running
Above we see Capt. Steve sorting through four canvas bags looking for the owner’s manual for an electric head so he can find out its scheduled maintenance. The quest is not pretty. Once the right manual is found, then it is a matter of reading over the small type to discover where the maintenance schedule is hidden. Proof of scheduled maintenance adherence is required to keep the warranty in place. There are manuals for 52 items of equipment in those bags for an actual 42-footer (12.8 m) that we tested.
Finally, a company has created a better system. It’s called Vessel Vanguard and it is a digital-boat management program that automatically alerts the boat owner when scheduled maintenance is due. It provides digital manuals of every piece of equipment on board, tracks warranty status and manages parts lists. It also has an easy place for owners to post proof of maintenance with invoices so when the boat is put up for sale, the owner can prove excellent maintenance and fetch a higher price for the vessel. CL Yachts is not a high-production boat builder. Unlike other brands, it’s not under the gun to push 10 units out the door every quarter to satisfy stock analysts' expectations. The result is that more TLC goes into every step of the building process of the relatively few units it does build. And, more customization is possible because there is no builder push-back for things that could slow meeting the monthly quota. For all of these reasons, the CLB72 is a semi-custom yacht that is more likely to provide an owner/operator with both the personalization wanted and trouble-free operation. See what Capt. Steve has to say about her operation and performance. More...
At 24’ (7.32 m) long with an 8’6” (2.59 m) beam, the Sailfish 241 CC has the freeboard and deep-V design that will let an owner head offshore on the right day. With a tested weight of about 6,200 lbs. (2,812.27 kg), she’s readily trailerable with a full-sized vehicle. She has family-friendly options like a porta-potty in the console, a freshwater washdown on the transom and an entertainment package that includes a ski tow bar, removable bow table and Fusion stereo with transom remote. We have always liked the Cruisers Yachts 42 Cantius because the boat is designed for genteel cruising for two couples in privacy. The main deck has all of the usual features for dayboat entertaining a crowd around home but when it comes to the annual cruise, it handles two couples in comfort. Each stateroom has its own head. One of the unsung heroes of the boating industry is a man named Augusto “Kiko” Villalon. In the U.S., he founded Marine Concepts, a company that made the tooling for dozens of boat builders over the years and has worked with the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) in setting standards for decades. He is generally regarded as one of the nation’s experts in boat construction, systems and maintenance. Kiko is now in his 80s and still sailing in his 44’ (13.4 m) Brewer, Alfin. Hidden in a cigar box is his secret maintenance genie. More...
