World’s Largest Electric Multihull Released from Its Mold
Polish multihull specialist Sunreef Yachts has announced that it has completed the hull on the first Sunreef 43M (141’) Eco. Measuring 42.7 meters, the project is set to become the world's largest electric catamaran once delivered.
Utilizing the largest single-shot infusion process ever attempted in the yachting industry, the resin was infused into dry fiberglass and coring materials under vacuum pressure. The result is a hull that is not only lighter and stronger than traditional builds but also environmentally responsible, significantly reducing volatile organic compound emissions.
"This isn't merely about scale—it's about precision engineering at its finest," explains Thomas Carey, Project Manager at Ocean Independence. "With the hull unmolded, on first inspection, the surface finish has exceeded expectations, even before final preparation for paint."
The unmolding operation spanned two weeks and demonstrated Sunreef’s technical prowess and dedication to quality. The process involved methodical disassembly of the reusable mold in sections.
The model was first revealed in January 2022 as the newest addition to the shipyard's Eco fleet. The sale of the first hull was completed by Tim Quinlan at Ocean Independence and confirmed at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022.
"The hull unmolding brings us closer to building one of the most revolutionary vessels in the yachting industry," said Francis Lapp, founder and president at Sunreef Yachts. "The Sunreef 43M Eco’s composite structure offers the best of robustness and weight efficiency, while her architecture, build quality and green tech solutions make her the world’s most advanced electric superyacht."
The hull, superstructure and rigging of the vessel feature over 120 square meters (1,291 sq.ft.)of integrated solar panels, supplying the yacht with green energy. Meanwhile, an advanced hydro-generation system produces clean power, for emission-free cruising and "infinite range", according to the shipyard.
Highlights of the 43M Eco include a large "ocean lounge" aft that ties the aft deck, swim platform and fold-down balconies into a single space for waterside lounging. The area can be customized to the requirements of each owner with the addition of a massage room, a bar serving drinks to guests or a fitness area. Tenders and toys can be stored in the yacht's invisible aft garage.
A second sun lounging option can be found up on the flybridge with a spa pool and oversized sun pads, a bar and dining area and an outdoor cinema.
Bound for Extreme Latitudes
Captain Jim Thom, whose extensive experience sailing in extreme latitudes aligns perfectly with the Owner’s adventurous vision, is also closely involved in the project. "The electric systems make this yacht something special," he notes. "The environmental benefits are profound, and the silence under power and at anchor will add another dimension to the experience in remote destinations."
Sunreef Yachts is said to have an impressive 31 yachts on order or under construction. The yard recently unveiled the flagship model in its Ultima catamaran range, a 33.8-metre designed in collaboration with Dutch design agency Phathom Studio.
