The new Helm Master EX joystick can be used with from one to four outboards and was developed exclusively for Yamaha outboards.

Yamaha Marine yesterday introduced Helm Master EX, an integrated control system for that can be used with a single outboard application. This is a first for the boating industry and includes joystick maneuverability, autopilot, full electrically powered steering and other advantages.

“The new and improved features of Helm Master EX make boating easier and more convenient than ever before,” Ben Speciale, president of Yamaha Marine’s U.S. Business Unit said in a statement. “The expansion of the system to single-outboard boat configuration is perfect for smaller center-console and larger bay boats. The new joystick option, which is the same as that used on multi-outboard system, allows boaters who desire single outboard power to enjoy the majority of the benefits association with multi-outboard Helm Master EX applications.” The system can be applied to up to four motors.

Obviously, a joystick on a single engine can’t move a boat side ways, as it could with multiple engines or a bow thruster, nevertheless the new system has many useful features.

New Features

Components in the Helm Master EX system were all designed exclusively for Yamaha outboards. The joystick is a new design inside and out and has upgraded software that now enables single-button features. New digital binnacle controls are available in single or twin levers and include Speed Control, Neutral Hold and friction adjustment. Keyless ignition, a remote fob and the CL5 touchscreen display are also new.

The binnacle controls have internal blue lights that illuminate when a given function is engaged.

The key fob is an option in single and twin applications, but standard for triples and quads.

When asked what kind of advantage the joystick gives an owner of a single outboard-powered boat, David Meeler, Yamaha’s new product introduction manager, said, “Rather than having three hands work throttle, shift and steering you have three fingers controlling the joystick.”

With Helm Master EX, owners of single-outboard boats get all the benefits of a joystick.

Additionally, Helm Master EX includes Digital Electric Steering (DES), which eliminates the pumps and other accessories required for hydraulic systems. DES can also be retrofit to many motors that previously had Yamaha’s Digital Electronic Control (DEC). All functions that had been on a DEC system, are standard on Helm Master EX

Easy Auto Pilot

One of the highlights of Helm Master EX is the autopilot that Yamaha developed exclusively for the system. It has a small easily configured panel on the console, a heading sensor that mounts in a console and an antenna mounted high on the boat. Single-touch buttons on the panel can be used to set the heading, hold course or adjust the track. A quick blip of the joystick can be used for directions. It can also be integrated with Speed Control, Trim Assist and other functions.

The autopilot control panel has easy-to-understand backlit buttons.

Some of the enhanced features of the joystick include single-button DriftPoint Track and Track Point. DriftPoint Track maintains the boat’s heading while drifting on a pre-set track, which could be good for fishing near a structure or shelf. Track Point lets a captain navigation along a series of waypoints and upon arrival at the final destination, the system uses a two-stage speed reduction to ensure that the boat won’t overshoot the spot. Helm Master EX has 10 total SetPoint modes for station keeping, maintaining a course, directional control and more.

Single button functions make the autopilot panel intuitive to learn and use.

New or Used

Yamaha models that Helm Master EX is available on include the 150-, 175- and 200-hp 2.8-liter engines, the 4.2-liter V-6 225-, 250- and 300-hp models and the 425-hp 5.3-liter V-8 XTO Offshore. It cannot be used on the 3.3-liter F250 and F350A models.

Helm Master EX can be installed by a boat manufacturer at the factory or added by dealers in a re-power. If a customer buys a boat with only some of the features and decides he wants more later, they can be added, creating a custom application. For example, if a buyer only wants the joystick at first and then later decides he wants the autopilot, it can be added.

Other Accessories

If a boatowner is prone to losing his/her keys, Helm Master EX has back-lit power and start-stop switches. The aforementioned key fob lets the owner start and stop the engines remotely from as far away as 32” (81.28 cm) and it serves as the on-off switch for the Y-COP anti-theft system. It also shuts down the fuel injection. An under-dash wireless receiver connects with the fob.

The CL5 color touchscreen is compatible with all previous DEC applications and Command Link mechanical controls. An available larger CL7 display is available and Helm Master X is compatible with some Garmin multifunction displays through the unit’s screen. It can also integrate with Raymarine Axiom displays via a remote-mounted controller.

The CL5 display puts information for up to four outboards on a single screen.

Keyless ignition means no more worrying about lost keys.

Price and Availability

Helm Master EX has a retail price of $8,400 for a single XTO Offshore application and $42,400 for quads with electric steering. It’s being installed on new boats currently at some manufacturers and consumers can expect to see it on boats later this summer or in early Fall.
