Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

The Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius’ highly stylized exterior conceals a practical interior layout with many innovative features.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

The large hull-side windows create a light and airy feel in the master and guest staterooms.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

Design details such as the notch in the back of the side windows and the stainless steel detail in the hull-side windows add a contemporary style to the Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius and break up large surfaces to help make the boat lower than it really is.

The new 46 Cantius reflects Cruisers Yachts’ understanding of the way people use a coupe-style boat in this range, which is to say that she is designed as a day boat for entertaining and as a comfortable, luxurious yacht for two-couple cruising.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius layout

The layout of the transom and main deck flows from boarding on the swim platform to the helm on one level.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius lower deck

The lower deck includes a full-beam master stateroom with an en-suite head and a VIP stateroom with a private entrance to the day head, which is actually larger than the master’s.

Major Features

  • Interior Decor. Cruisers Yachts' choice and application of interior materials, wood, upholstery, fabrics, metal accents, and palette create a feeling of opulence and class.
  • Accommodations Layout. This yacht was designed for cruising by two adult couples in genteel privacy. Both the master and the VIP cabin have large beds, lots of deck space, and large heads with walk-in shower stalls. The builder has not tried to cram three cabins in as most builders do.
  • Forward Seating. The flexible forward seating allows for a group to be seated or converts to side-by-side loungers with a solid wood table that deploys from under the center seat.
  • Aft Glass Bulkhead. The stainless steel framed glass bulkhead has an opening door and the three panels collapse to open the galley and salon to the outside.
  • Transom Storage. The transom features storage that can accommodate fenders, lines, lifejackets, hoses and has a freshwater spigot and shore power connection.
  • Transom Grill. The starboard side of the transom has a smokeless grill under a cover that acts as a backsplash when open.
  • Large Hull-Side Window. The large hullside windows allow daylight into the staterooms and provide views outside.
  • Optional Hydraulically Lowering Swim Platform. Full beam, 4’5” (1.35 m) deep swim platform that can launch the ship’s tender and act as a beach. Integrated stairs automatically deploy as the platform lowers. This is optional, but we recommend it for anyone considering cruising as it is the best place to stow the tender.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius pod drives

Powered by twin 435-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS600 with pod drives, the 46 Cantius proved to have a comfortable ride.

The Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius has a length overall of 46’5” (14.15 m), a beam of 14’6” (4.42 m), and a draft of 42” (1.07 m). With an empty weight of 32,200 lbs. (14,606 kg), 87% fuel, and three persons onboard, the estimated test weight was 34,677 lbs. (15,729 kg).

With twin 435-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS600 with pod drive turning counter-rotating propellers spooled up to 3610 rpm, a top speed of 35.6 mph (31.0 knots) was recorded. With the engine brought back to 20 mph (17.4 knots) cruise, the 46 Cantius was burning 27 gph (102 lph), producing a range of 250 statute miles (220 nautical miles).

Displacement Speeds. Dropping the speed even more naturally produced a significant increase in range. Dropping to 10.1 mph (8.7 knots), the range increased to 571 statute miles (486.8 nautical miles).

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

The sea conditions that the 46 Cantius was tested in were nominal, therefore the ride in chop was tested by crossing the photo-boats wake.

There were not any significant sea conditions during our test, which meant the 46 Cantius was not tested in rough water conditions. However, the 46 Cantius performed well driving through the wake of the photo-boat with the chines extending forward, forming a spray barrier that sent water out low, presenting a dry ride.

The pod drives of the Volvo Penta IPS600s do not present exhilarating high-speed cornering on any boat. That means it is nearly impossible for the skipper to get heavy-handed and throw the boat into an unsafe high-speed turn. Guests and family will appreciate this detail. Likewise, firewall starts are also gentler than what might be possible on non-IPS power yachts. The performance is dialed to give the operator confidence and control and the passengers a relaxed, assured feeling.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

During our test runs, the 46 Cantius hit a top speed of 35.6 mph at 3610 rpm while burning 44.5 gph at a range of 259 statute miles.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

She planed in 5.9 seconds, and then accelerated to 20 mph in 8.8 seconds, then up to 30 mph in 21.8 seconds.

With the Volvo Penta IPS600, the pods can vector to allow the 46 Cantius to virtually move in any direction at any altitude when operating at low speeds. Close in maneuvering and docking is stress-free using the systems joystick when it is properly calibrated. Every boat model must be individually calibrated by Volvo techs or trained builder personnel.

Joystick Operation. Moving the joystick forward, back or side to side makes the boat move in the chosen direction. Twisting the joystick, left or right, changes the attitude of the boat. It is an intuitive system that is easy to learn. Some systems are slower than others or may have a delay before engaging. This characteristic can take some getting used to. In tight confines with a crosscurrent, the operator must definitely plan ahead.

Features Inspection

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius swim platform

The full-beam swim platform leads to the side-decks on both sides. The cockpit is entered from the starboard side only from the stern platform.

Swim Platform

The full-beam swim platform extends out 4’5” (1.35 m) from the transom and provides an ideal boarding area when secured to a floating dock. There are stairs on the starboard side that deploy when the platform is lowered. The re-boarding ladder is under a deck hatch cover and is deployable from in the water.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius optional platform

The test boat had the optional swim platform that hydraulically lowers to form a beach or launch a tender. The stairs deploy as the platform lowers.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius raised

The swim platform is raised and lowered with a remote controller, which is stored inside the transom storage.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius ladder

The four-step re-boarding ladder stows neatly under a deck lid with a gas assist strut.

Cruisers Yachts built into the transom a storage area that provides space to store lines, fenders, hoses, and cleaning materials that are convenient to those who need them. The storage can be accessed from the lid on top or from hatches in the transom. On the starboard side of the transom storage is a grilling station.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius transom

The transom storage can be accessed from above or below. Note the 10” (.25 m) stainless steel cleats mounted on the transom side rail.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius transom

Inside the transom storage on the port side is the shore power connection, city water connection, and a freshwater washdown spigot.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius grill

Built into the transom storage on the test boat is an optional Kenyon electric grill under a lid that has a gas assist strut to keep it in place when lifted to the splash back position.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius grill

Underneath the grill on the test boat is an optional drawer refrigerator convenient to keep the ingredients fresh before grilling.

Cruisers Yachts cleanly arranged the cockpit or aft deck with L-shaped seating that spans the length of the transom with forward facing bench seating and extends the length of the port side with inboard facing bench seating. This arrangement maximizes seating while leaving egress from the swim platform restricted to the starboard steps. There are steps on the port side that lead to the side deck on the port side. There is 6’8” (2.03 m) of freeboard at the forward end of the cockpit.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius steps

There are steps leading from the swim platform to the side decks on both the port and starboard side.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius u shaped table

The triangular-shaped table is surrounded by the L-shaped bench seating.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius

The storage below the bench seating has hinges that keep the seat base upright for easy access to what is stored below.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius gate

A safety gate is mounted at the top of the steps on the starboard side. The gate has positive locks that both open and close.

The safety gate is just one example of Cruisers Yachts' attention to detail with fit-and-finish that reflects the quality. All of the stainless steel shows high quality and welds are buffed smooth to eliminate unnecessary corrosion.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius bench seating

Forward of the bench seating on the test boat is an optional icemaker with a drink prep station on top.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius prep station

On the starboard side is a prep station with a trash receptacle built-in. The test boat had the optional refrigerator built in.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius light switches

Above the starboard prep station are the external light switches and control switch for the optional cockpit awning.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius sun shade

The test boat had an optional sunshade built into the hardtop. This electrically actuated shade has continuous tensioning and nearly silent operation.

Side Decks

Leading forward are side decks both on the starboard and port side of the vessel. There is 17” (.43 m) from the superstructure to the safety rail which is 26” (.66 m) above the deck. There is a 5” (.13 m) step up at midships. The foot well is 8” (.20 m) wide and there is a 5” toe rail, making walking on the side decks secure.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius side deck

Shown is the starboard side deck. Note the safety rail on the outboard side and the handrail on the hardtop. This makes moving along the side decks more secure.

Forward Seating

The U-shaped forward seating on the 46 Cantius demonstrates that Cruisers Yachts understands how their owners use their boats. They designed the seating in a U-shape so that a group can sit and have a conversation or a cocktail party. They can be converted so two can use them as a lounge for sun bathing.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius

Shown is the forward seating area set up as a conversation pit. Note the hatch which brings light below.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius lounge

The backrest can be raised up to create lounge-style seating. The table stows inside the center seat and has built in drink holders.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius seat storage

Under the seat is storage. Note that the test boat had the optional forward sunshade. The support bars are stored under the seats.

The foredeck has 10” (.25 m) stainless steel cleats port and starboard, and an anchor locker that leads to the through the stem stainless steel anchor. The windlass has pedal switches or can be remotely actuated from the helm. The test boat came with an optional freshwater anchor washdown system located inside the anchor locker. There is 7’4” (2.24 m) of freeboard at the bow.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius anchor locker

The anchor locker hatch has a gas-assist strut that keeps it open. Note the cleat to secure the rode when the anchor is deployed. The stainless steel circular plate is the mount for the optional forward sunshade. The opening to the right of the windlass gives the crew a fighting chance to untangle the chain after a rough passage.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius anchor

Shown is the stainless steel anchor with a stainless steel through-the-stem bow roller.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius light

On the bow is a remotely operated searchlight. The controls are on the helm dash.

Glass Bulkhead

The coupe has an aft glass bulkhead in three panels. The center panel opens like a swinging door, giving easy access to the galley/salon area inside. Additionally, all three panels can slide to the port side creating a 5’4” (1.63 m) wide opening, making the cockpit and galley/salon areas open to the cockpit for socializing.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius panel

The center panel opens like a standard swinging door.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius panels

The three panels slide to the port side to create a 5’4” (1.63 m) opening that allows flow from the cockpit to the inside.

The galley on the 46 Cantius is between the cockpit and the dinette and salon seating, making it central to entertaining both inside and outside. Solid surface countertops on the port side form an L-shape and there is a smaller countertop on the starboard side above the refrigerator/freezer. Above the port and starboard counters is cupboard storage. There is 6’6” (1.98 m) of headroom throughout the galley and salon area. Amtico decking is used throughout the galley, salon, dinette, and helm area.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius counter tops

Shown is the port side countertops. Both the sink and the stove have cover inserts creating more counter space when needed.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius prep

There is additional prep area on the starboard side. Note the salon television in the stowed position. It swings out when needed. The cabin light switches are well positioned just inside the door.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius microwave

The microwave/convection oven is located in the forward lower cabinets.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius cook top

Shown is the two-burner cooktop with the cover removed. Note the safety push-switch which disconnects power to the burner when the cover is in place.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius galley

The stainless steel galley sink is deep, and the sides are nearly vertical. This helps to keep any water in the sink from sloshing.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius panel

Just inside the glass enclosure are the cabin light switches, stereo controller, air conditioning, power outlets, and 12-volt outlet.

Cruisers Yachts located the salon and dinette area forward of the galley on the 46 Cantius. Placing a settee on the starboard side behind the helm and a dinette that doubles as a double-berth on the port side. This arrangement of the available space maximizes inside social space for dining or simply entertaining while still maintaining a full galley.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius settee

The starboard side settee can comfortably seat two adults.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius dinette

There are two steps up to the dinette. A 9” lower step and an 8.5” second step. The raised dinette allows for greater headroom in the master stateroom and enables guests to see out the windows.

Dinette. The test boat had a solid wood dining table. Cruisers Yachts is working on a design that will allow the table to convert the dinette into a third berth. Future 46 Cantius yachts will have this feature.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius wood table

The solid wood table on the test boat folds to allow easier egress to the seating that surrounds the table.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius

For privacy, the 46 Cantius has pleated blinds that lower over the glass bulkhead and side windows.

The helm station is a well-executed amalgamation of anti-glare materials, woods, cloth, metals, Lexan, and carbon fiber. All controls, switches, and touchscreens are arranged logically and within easy reach.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius helm

The helm is well-executed. However, we would like to see a storage pouch or cubby above the armrest for incidentals.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius helm

The view from the helm is through a windshield that is 9’ (2.74 m) wide and 3’6” (1.07 m) vertically.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius dash

The Lexan dash supports twin 12” (30.48 cm) Garmin multifunction display units and the Rockford Fosgate full function wired remote with a 2.7” (6.85 cm) display. Note that the compass is located directly in front of the steering wheel.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius helm

On the port side of the helm station is the remote for the searchlight, a 12-volt outlet, a stainless steel drink holder, and a Qi induction cell phone charger all built into a carbon fiber panel.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius vhf

The Garmin VHF radio is located to the left of the steering wheel within easy reach.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius helm

On the starboard side of the helm station are the system switches all clearly marked and mounted on a carbon fiber panel. Note the horn switch is clearly discernable in red.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius controls

Engine controls are mounted on an armrest next to the helm seat.

Engine Controls. Cruisers Yachts placed all of the engine controls along an armrest. The engine start/stop switches are under the system switch panel, directly in front of the engine controls. The trim tabs are mounted directly behind. Further back is the joystick control for close in maneuvering. Behind the joystick are a Garmin display controller and a stainless steel drink holder.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius

The helm seat is double wide and has a bolster that can be positioned for standup operation. We would like separate bolsters for the operator and passenger.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius storage

There is a storage drawer under the helm seat. A good place to keep registration documents.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius foot rest

There is a fold-down step that raises the operator up when standing and a footrest both with non-skid inserts.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius steering wheel

The leather-wrapped stainless steel steering wheel has a tilt base.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius space

There is space behind the dash that could be utilized for storage.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius breaker panel

Below the helm, in the companionway is the breaker panel which is logically laid-out.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius

The companionway stairs lead down to the staterooms and day head.

The VIP Stateroom

Cruisers Yachts used an appealing palette of colors and textures to make the guest stateroom inviting. The hull-side windows and overhead hatch bring in light and water elements. Wood frames the windows with stainless steel accented fabric. A mirror serves as the headboard and reading lights are to port and starboard. Dual hanging lockers and under the berth drawer storage allow for extended stays aboard. Private access to the day head should give guests a feeling of comfort and privacy.

Both the stateroom and the head have a bit more deck space than we often see on boats this size that try to cram three cabins into a similar-sized space.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius head room

The headroom entering the guest stateroom is 6’3” (1.91 m) and the double berth is 74” (1.88 m) long. There is 3’5” (1.04 m) headroom over the berth.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius guest stateroom

Entering the guest stateroom, to starboard is a hanging locker and the private entrance to the day head.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius tv

To port is a second hanging locker and entertainment center with a flat panel television, stereo control, and air conditioning controller.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius hatch

An overhead hatch brings light into the suite and provides the required emergency exit.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius berth

Sconces double as reading lights. An attractive combination of fabric, mirror, and metal elements frame the double berth.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius windows

Wood frames the hull-side windows with pleated blinds providing needed privacy.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius double berth

Storage drawers built into the base of the double berth offer accommodation for guests staying aboard for extended periods.

Day Head

With an entrance from the companionway and a private entrance from the VIP guest stateroom, the day head serves dual purposes.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius day head

The day head has a separate shower stall with bench seat.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius

A vessel sink and stainless steel faucet are mounted on a solid surface countertop above a storage cabinet.

Master Stateroom

The full-beam master stateroom has large windows port and starboard, letting lots of light and fresh air into the space. The starboard side bureau, cabinets, and hanging lockers provide storage for extended stays aboard. Entering the master stateroom, there is 6’3” (1.91 m) headroom which drops down to 5’6” (1.67 m) in the mid cabin and 4’10” (1.47 m) further aft.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius master stateroom

The centerline master berth is 79” (2.01 m) long and 57” (1.45 m) across.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius storage locker

A large storage locker in the entrance to the master stateroom provides additional space to stow personal items onboard.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius bulkhead

Wood, fabric, mirror, metal, and sconce lighting combine to create an attractive aft bulkhead, using the same theme as seen in the VIP stateroom.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius port lounge

Cruisers Yachts offer a choice of a port lounge or an additional bureau. The test boat had the lounger with additional storage at the foot.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius storage drawer

Shown is the storage drawer open and there is also storage under the lounge.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius controls

Stereo, light switches, power outlets, and air conditioning controls are conveniently located on the starboard side of the double berth.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius hanging locker

An optional washer/dryer was on the test boat filling a space that would otherwise be a hanging locker.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius tv

A flat panel television is on the port side forward bulkhead.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius hull side windows

The hull-side windows are 4’2” (1.27 m) wide and open to allow fresh air into the master stateroom. A plexiglass shield outside prevents water from entering the space.

Master Bath

The en-suite master bath is private and offers a separate shower enclosure. The vessel sink and stainless steel faucet are mounted on a vanity with storage.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius shower

The shower consists of a mounted shower wand and there is overhead lighting.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius bench seat

A molded-in bench seat in the shower enclosure.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius vessel

A vessel sink and stainless steel faucet are mounted on a solid surface countertop over storage cabinets. The portlight opens to allow fresh air into the space. A mirror is mounted just above the vanity counter.

Machinery Space

The machinery space is brightly lit and well organized with all cable and hoses labeled. Day check ports and gauges are easily accessed. The machinery space is well insulated creating only 64.8 decibels of sound at the helm station.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius machinery space

Access to the machinery space is through an insulated hatch in the cockpit deck.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius engines

The twin in-line six Volvo Penta IPS600 produce 435 horsepower each. Note, both oil dipsticks are mounted on the inboard side of each engine for easy day checks.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius pod drives

The pod drives with forward-facing counter-rotating propellers are designed to break away cleanly when striking a solid object without allowing water intrusion into the hull.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

Although her Euro-styled look is quite appealing, she has been built for American ergonomics.

While the 46 Cantius is Euro-styled, she is designed for American ergonomics and is ruggedly constructed. For example, her low-rake one-piece windshield reminds us of many European express boats — virtually all of which have such low overheads at the helm that the captain can’t stand at the helm. If he can, he has to bend over to see out. This is not the case with the 46 Cantius, which has a 6’6” (1.98 m) overhead clearance at the helm.

In profile the 46 Cantius looks robust — and she is. Cruisers Yachts knows its buyers have no interest in a crawl-in mid-cabin that some 40-something express cruisers have. While lots of things scale, the human body does not. There is no way to provide headroom for 6’+ (1.82 m) owners and guests other than to go up. That is why the dinette is up two rather high steps.

Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius running

The Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius has room enough to fit the tallest of captains with an overhead clearance of 6’6” (1.98 m) at the helm. On this express cruiser, there’s plenty of space and comfort for everyone to have a fun time aboard.

The all-glass aft bulkhead is unusual and is a culmination of a long quest by Cruisers Yachts to “bring the outside in.” It opens up the interior and creates one large area that encompasses the cockpit, galley, and dinette for entertaining and easy flow of guests in and out. As mentioned before, we recommend the hydraulic swim platform because it adds such utility to the boat. When grilling it becomes another gathering spot.

In our opinion, the best features of all of the Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius are the two large and private staterooms with en suites. There is no better way to make a guest couple comfortable on a cruise than to give them space — and a private head with a separate shower. The VIP on this boat is one of the best we have seen in class.
