Out with the Old, in with the New
By Capt. Ron Svoboda
Cruisers Yachts is selling a premium product to very discerning group of boat buyers. After coaming the docks for a while I hopped onboard the 460 Express, a boat that has been on the production line for about 5 years now, so I thought I’d see what’s changed.
The first thing I noticed was the redesigned helm. The dash has been totally revamped and uses cutting edge technology to bring this big express into the future. By implementing all digital controls and instrumentation and tossing the analog gauge cluster in the trash. The yacht now has a modern yet simplified attitude. Of course the atypical Raymarine chart plotters are present, but two 12 inch units now take center stage providing optimal data processing. While just to the left of them, is the new Murphy HelmView which dispenses a gamut of engine information. Anything you want to monitor is simply at the touch of the screen. Now the Murphy set-up is only available with the Volvo Diesel power packages, and it should be noted that the HelmView’s touch screen takes some getting used to, so be sure your dealer spends plenty of time instructing you on it’s mannerisms.
A Relaxing Entertainer
Some other notably cool items include a new cockpit wetbar. This large, triangular bar is positioned right behind the captain’s chair and boasts a stowable 2-inch LCD TV on a swivel mount, allowing you to watch it from almost anywhere in the cockpit. Directly below the tube, is a large granite-like countertop with built in sink and electric grill. This BBQ will see a lot of use, so a cockpit refrigerator is now standard equipment. If you like Jimmy Buffet, an optional icemaker is available to keep the fridge company. Speaking of company, the 460 received a restyled cockpit seating arraignment and will also be available with an aft facing “rumble seat” that flips out of the transom locker.
Belowdeck Features
The salon of the 460 also received considerable attention during the redo. For starters, two different cabin layout options are available that give you a choice of guest stateroom configurations. Located at the forepeak, the guest accommodations can be be ordered with a pair of single bunks or one island berth. Either way, the stateroom has a spacious, en-suite head compartment with its own shower stall.
The elegantly restyled salon of the 460 boasts plenty of high-gloss Cherry. The space reminded me of a fine hotel as opposed to a boat cabin, showing that Cruisers Yachts continues to build one of the finest production yachts in the states. To enhance the salon, six large windows add light and ambiance to the sitting area and galley.
Just aft is the master stateroom with the owners berth located amidships to offer greater comfort and space. Complete with its own TV and entertainment system, the cabin can also be equipped with a washer and dryer combo unit. The master stateroom also features an en-suite head and shower compartments separated by a vanity and sink unit.
Overall, the 460 Express seems to have found its niche. It has matured into a high quality boat with some amazing new features and has always delivered a classy interior and dependable performance. These reasons may be the cause that nearly one quarter of Cruisers Yachts productions shipped overseas.
