BoatTEST.com has tested Cruisers Yachts for a few years now, but this was my first chance to test them. I was in for a great time! Cruisers seems to have a good handle on what their marketplace is looking for and continues to improve construction while working towards reducing cost. I enjoyed talking with all the crew from Cruisers and the crew from Galati Yacht Sales. We came from a near rain out just south of St. Petersburg, Florida to an unseasonably dry 41% relative humidity and 92 degrees to test Cruisers 2005 offerings.
Out front, Cruisers Yachts likes to have the anchor windlass and chain under a cover which keeps the bow nice and clean. A remote controlled spotlight sits atop the rails for finding marks easily at night. The 460 Express had the optional foredeck cushions that provide lots of room for soaking up sun when you’re forward of the walkthrough windshield. We also had a nice hardtop which really helps out in the hot Florida sun.
Behind the Wheel
The dash was well organized with extra room for flat panel electronics, whether you want integrated systems or not. We had some trouble reading the right engine readouts, but that could have been just a panel readout problem as the left side was clearly readable. All seating from the helm to the crescent and bench seats were very comfortable. The cockpit is covered in beige carpet which is easy on bare feet.
Over on the starboard side is a wet bar for entertaining topside. It features a nice prep top with sink above two wing cabinets with bottle storage, and a center refrigerator with ice maker round out this handy bar.
When you feel like coming back aboard from taking a dip there’s a transom shower at the walkthrough and fender storage in the integrated swim platform.
Power Plant
Engine access is through a motorized hatch and down a removable ladder, which makes routine checks and maintenance a much simpler task when working around the twin engine setup. The generator is mounted in the back of the spaces and most all maintenance items can be reached with reasonable effort.
Heading down below you enter the main saloon which has very good headroom and a redesigned table with single post and drop-down wings. The galley is positioned to port and includes a microwave with convection oven that will be very handy when entertaining, electric three-burner stove and electric refrigerator/freezer which are standard. Cruisers Yachts’ uses lots of wood cabinetry to enhance the looks below. The cherry is a fabulous look, but the way it takes a stain sometimes can be a challenge.
Staterooms
Moving forward is the redesigned guest quarters. A wet head is to port with entry from either the main saloon or from the bow guest quarters. These beds can be set up as a single upper bunk and lower bunk or the upper bunk can be rolled out further into a double berth.
The owner’s cabin is in the stern and has stand-up room at the foot of the island bed. The en-suite head is divided into a separate compartment for the VacuFlush toilet, open countertop with sink, and separate shower compartment. The head doesn’t have to be completely tied up just because someone is taking a shower anymore. For all your belongings there are also full length hanging closets to stern and half length towards the bow.
Specs
The redesigned 460 Express Cruiser measures in at 46’9” in length overall with its integrated swim platform, and 14 feet wide at the beam. She needs 11’4” of clearance with her arch for bridges and 42 inches of draft below her keel. In the saloon you have up to 6’6” of headroom, which is very respectable for a boat this size. With diesel engines she weighs in at 25,900 pounds, and carries up to 400 gallons of fuel and can carry up to 100 gallons of water.
Performance and Ride
When we tested the redesigned 460 Express she was equipped with twin Volvo TAMD 75P diesels as with ZF drives. There were four people on board and we had ¾ of a tank of fuel. Wind was dead calm and the only wake was from our own testing and a passing Sea Tow driver who either didn’t see us or didn’t care.
The 460 handled smoothly and responded with typical diesel power. She was out of the hole in just over 12 seconds and up to 30 mph in under 23 seconds. At 2000 rpm she was cruising along at over 23 mph and burning around 26 gph. She topped out at 40 mph turning 2680 rpm. The 440 was also well insulated for sound for a diesel with a top reading of only 86 dBa for sound levels at top end.
