Formula 457 CCF: The Right Formula

Captain's Report by Capt. Ken Kreisler

Formula 457 CCF - a formidable competitor in the offshore fishing circuit

Power and hull design combine to make the Formula CCF a formidable competitor in the offshore fishing circuit.

Long a mainstay in the boat building business, and one which has continually enjoyed excellent customer relationships, Formula has now introduced yet another model in its Center Console lineup. The new 457 Center Console Fish (CCF) is a big shouldered, well-appointed boat with the kind of muscle, a trio of 600-hp Mercury outboards, to get her offshore and back in sea states that are not often kindly. Vessel Inspection - Formula 457 CCF

The Formula 457 CCF is locked and loaded for big time angling action. She also supplies everything a luxurious cruising boat should have… and then some.

Formula 457 CCF - profile

As her dynamic profile clearly indicates, this is one serious fishing platform. She was designed and engineered by a company, under the continued stewardship of the Porter Family, with 68 years of delivering forward-looking products in her wake. And running on her FAS3TECH® hull means a reduction of hull friction and outstanding top speed.

Bow - Formula 457 CCF

Formula 457 CCF - bow

The 457 CCF's bow.

With lots of room to work with, Formula designed the bow area for comfortable gatherings or as a casting platform. Putting the electric hi-lo table in the down position, the space is easily transformed. Storage is beneath the seat cushions and there are additional cabinets located here as well. The forward lounge seat easily has room for three and there is a forward full-out bench to allow more seating around the table. Note how deep this space is as well as added rails wherever necessary.

Formula 457 CCF - forward lounge seat

Easily deployed, and just as conveniently stowed, the forward lounge seat is an added plus.

Formula 457 CCF - fully forward anchor locker

Fully forward is the anchor locker with a retractable hose for quick and easy wash down. It has controls for activation here and as well, can be controlled from the helm.

Formula 457 CCF - wide walkways and stainless rails

We paid special attention to the wide walkways and stainless rails. Again, note how deep the space is from deck to gunnel, a sure sign of Formula's concern for safe transiting to and from the bow area.

Formula 457 CCF - stereo speakers

To further enhance your time in the bow, and as most everywhere aboard, Formula has strategically placed stereo speakers and a subwoofer here.

Cabin - Formula 457 CCF

With her dual personality as an impressive offshore fishing machine and luxurious cruising boat, there’s no mistaking the attention to detail Formula went to in creating this space.

Formula 457 CCF - cabin with plenty of LED lighting and excellent headroom

Access to the cabin is via a door on the port side of the console where, two steps down, a tastefully done, and well-thought out quarters await. With plenty of LED lighting, ambient light, and excellent headroom, Formula has taken full advantage of her 13' 9" beam to create a comfortable space.

Formula 457 CCF - five rod holder

With fishing amenities in mind, a stand up, five-rod holder is provided here as well.

Formula 457 CCF - table transforms to large berth

In a clever design, and with space-saving in mind, stowing the table away and using the filler cushions hiding in this dedicated drawer space, easily transforms the area into a large berth. A television will add viewing enjoyment when necessary and 8000 BTU’s of air conditioning will keep things cool on hot days and nights.

Formula 457 CCF - sleeping area

Once set up, the sleeping area measures 60" wide by 78" long. Storage is behind the starboard cushion and underneath both seats as well as in overhead cabinets.

Formula 457 CCF - AC panel

Behind the port cushion is access to the AC panel, and shorepower and generator controls.

Formula 457 CCF - galley

The galley is over to port and features a countertop, drawer space, overhead storage, sink, microwave, and pull out refrigerator. Note the sculpted backsplash, adding a touch of elegance to the already tasteful décor.

Formula 457 CCF - head

Aft in the cabin is the head complete with walk-in shower, sink, vanity with storage beneath, mirror and cabinet, and electric toilet. The same stylish backsplash seen in the galley is also here as well.

Helm, Top Deck & Cockpit - Formula 457 CCF

A fisherman’s paradise of outstanding features awaits those who pursue the horizon in search of adventure and the adrenalin-rush of hooking up a big fish. As well, many of these same standard and optional items are also geared towards providing enjoyable and pleasant cruising time, making the Formula 457 CCF’s profile that much more admirable.

Formula 457 CCF - helm console

The well-appointed and classy, molded composite helm console, offers the optional trio of Garmin widescreen touchscreens. Dual screens are standard. Raymarine equipment is also available. With so much room to work with, all controls, tactile buttons, joystick, trim tabs, bow thruster and others are well-positioned, visible, and within easy reach. The stainless wheel is on the centerline. The three-piece, compound curved console windshield, has a power opening forward glass

Formula 457 CCF - three Pompanette helm seats

Three Pompanette helm seats, all bolstered and electrically operated, supply comfortable accommodations here. Note the open hatch just aft of the seats leading to the upper tower as well as the flush-mounted stereo speakers and LED lighting in the overhead.

Aft of the forward helm seats are these optional individual seats, also Pompanette and bolstered with armrests. A three-person bench is standard.

Formula 457 CCF - extra storage space in hatches in front of the helm seats

Extra storage space is provided in these hatches in the forward part of the deck in front of the helm seats.

Formula 457 CCF - more storage at the aft helm seats

More storage is found at the aft helm seats as well as in the deck space.

Formula 457 CCF - second row deck hatches

Here the second row deck hatches mirror those found in the forward helm seat deck.

Formula 457 CCF - full tackle center

A full tackle center is behind the helm of the 457 CCF.

Aft of the back row of helm seats is this full tackle center. Again, note the wide walkways to both sides and how deep the space is between the deck and the top of the gunnel. It also can do double duty as a ‘summer kitchen’ as Formula calls it. There’s a hidden seat on top that easily pulls out. In addition, there are a pair of large Yeti coolers in the console bottom itself that, at the touch of a button, roll out. Throw some cushions on top and there’s even more available seating.

Formula 457 CCF - full tackle center with plenty of room to rig your lures and baits

With the wide open spaces afforded here, there is plenty of room to rig your lures and baits.

Formula 457 CCF - large in-deck storage

The walkways have large in-deck storage on both sides with a combined 280 gallons total. Here, on the starboard side, the insulated Dometic Eskimo fish box w/ ice maker, measuring 6+ feet long, can produce 22 pounds of ice per hour.

Formula 457 CCF - boarding door has a stainless boarding ladder

The starboard boarding door has an easily deployed stainless boarding ladder installed within while the port door has a built-in step on the inside for easy on and off. There is also a hook up for an additional boarding ladder here as well.

Formula 457 CCF - step to the top deck

Using a stowable step in the console below allows easy access to the top deck.

Formula 457 CCF - top deck with comfortable seating and excellent sightlines

There is plenty of room up here for comfortable seating as well as providing excellent sightlines for the skipper while dragging lines and on the lookout for striking fish.

Formula 457 CCF - top deck lounge seating

A comfortable lounge is provided for relaxed seating. The backrest is hinged and there is a storage space behind it.

Formula 457 CCF - top deck seating

Additional seating is found forward of the helm and lounge.

Formula 457 CCF - top deck helm

The topsides helm has all the equipment the skipper needs to get the Formula 457 CCF into the action.

Aft Section - Formula 457 CCF

Formula 457 CCF - swim platform

With the lower unit the only part of the engines turning allowed Formula to design a large swim platform aft. A Kenyon grill top is located on the starboard side of the console. And there is much more to see beyond this birds-eye view from topsides. A large hatch forward of the transom console gains entrance to the mechanical space/equipment room.

Formula 457 CCF - mechanical space with plenty of room to move around

With wide open spaces, there's plenty of room to move around here including ready access to the Fischer Panda diesel generator.

Formula 457 CCF - fire suppression system

The fire suppression system and the reel for the shore power cord are easily reachable.

Formula 457 CCF - Hooker sea chest

The all-important custom, stainless Hooker sea chest is well within reach. Raw water coolant is brought here by the generator and handles the SeaKeeper, live wells, air conditioning and chiller plate fish box condensers.

Formula 457 CCF - SeaKeeper 6 gyro system

Besides other critical items such as electricals,, 35-gallon diesel fuel tank, Centaur battery charger, and house batteries, Formula has also found room for the standard SeaKeeper 6 gyro system. The fuel tanks are fully forward.

Formula 457 CCF - transom console houses a live well to port and scuba tank storage to starboard

The transom console houses a live well to port and multi scuba tank storage to starboard.

Formula 457 CCF - fold-away bench seat

The fold-away bench seat is easily deployed and folds up flat while the action is hot and heavy here.

Formula 457 CCF - electrically operated seat/step

And besides the transom shower, shore power hook ups, and other useful features, there is this electrically operated seat/step which sits just below the surface and provides safe and easy access in and out of the water.

Performance - Formula 457 CCF

With her FAS3TECH® hull, 22° deadrise and triple 600-hp Mercury V12 outboards turning 27½ pitch props, five people on board and 64% fuel, our test Formula 457 CCF, exclusively designed by John Adams, who is responsible for all of Formula’s lines and outstanding performance, showed off her mettle during our sea trial in challenging conditions. Our air temp was 91°, relative humidity at 68%, with wind and cloudy/sometimes rainy conditions. Sea state was between 2-4 feet.

At 6400 rpm, we noted a top speed of 63.2 mph/55 kts. Our best cruise of 48.7 mph/42.3 kts, turning 5000 rpm, translated to 330 statute miles or 287 nautical miles, all with a 10% fuel reserve. Our out-of-the-hole performance saw a 0-10 mph in ten seconds and 30 mph in 15.1 seconds. At about 20 mph, the triple Mercury’s two-speed transmissions switched from low gear to high gear without hesitation or any noticeable sound.

She handled all our maneuvers with assurance, immediately responding to the helm commands and taking several s-turns and hard over operations as expected on a designed and engineered boat from Formula. She was always under control, leaning over nicely with just a tad of speed lost on those turns, and no noticeable rattles or shaking, and remarkably solid while underway.

Summary - Formula 457 CCF

The first indication that this is a special boat is the noticeable iconic name and familiar thunderbird logo; after that, it only gets better. The Formula 457 CCF is not only a feast for the eyes but it will definitely stir the soul of any serious fishing person who desires to stack the deck in favor of their side in horizon-chasing adventures.

It starts, and ends, with the company’s fastidious attention to a quality build, its taking extra care of attention to detail, down to the smallest items, and making sure its customer/owner base, and future ones, are satisfied with the product.

The Formula 457 CCF is an exceptional kind of center console, one that is bristling with fishing amenities and equipped with the kind of power, as in a trio of 600-hp, V12 Mercury outboards, to make the on-water experience even that much more exciting. It is also a luxurious cruiser, one which promises outstanding conveniences while traveling with the family or friends. If you are ready to up your game to a big center console boat, make sure a visit to, and sea trial on, the Formula 457 CCF is part of your short list.
