Iconic Marine Group is going to pull the sheet off a new version of the Fountain 42 Lightning this summer. The first of the updated edition of the boat is already sold and according to speedonthewater.com, it’s going to be delivered this summer. Performance enthusiasts will likely be intrigued by the power going into the boat, twin Mercury Racing dual-calibration high-output turbocharged engines.
Big Power
The customer ordered the boat with twin 1350/1100 engines that can run at either hp rating depending on the fuel used. That’s sure to put the boat over the 100-mph mark, but the company isn’t going to make predictions.
New Design
Fountain Powerboats’ chief operating officer Jeff Harris said that the new boat is being built with a new and more precise hull mold. The company is using digital measuring equipment that it didn’t have when the company was building hundreds of the 42-footer. The design team was careful to retain the boat’s traditional Fountain lines, but it has some modern touches including a one-piece windshield, a single piece engine hatch and a new transom with an easier-to-use ladder.
In the cockpit, there are two power bolsters forward and a three-person aft bench. The starboard-side helm has been modernized and the throttles can be positioned on the left or right side of the steering wheel.
Reality Check
Regarding the 42 Lightning’s cabin, Harris said that buyers who see a performance-boat cabin as nothing more than a large storage area can get it without the refrigerator, sink and head unit. The furniture and a cedar-lined hanging locker come standard.
Harris said that reaction to the 42 Lighting from Fountain dealers has been positive. The boat is scheduled for delivery in July and the price is expected to be around $700,000.
