Four Winns HD 220 OB (2017-)

1 x 250-hp Mercury Verado XL

Brief Summary

The swim platform is one of the more attractive venues in the stylish Four Winns HD 220 OB; it's covered in two-tone soft non-skid with the company logo embedded, and overlooked by a broad lounge seat that readily converts to a sun lounge. The outboard configuration means space usually taken up by the motor box is now available for storage, and the lighter outboard power produces strong performance.

“Four

The Four Winns HD 220 OB has an LOA of 22’1” (6.74 m), a beam of 8’5” (2.59 m), and a draft of 35” (88.9 cm).

Mission

Four Winns’ HD 220 model is a sportboat first. Built with storage for a day cruise with watersports and comfortable accommodations that can seat 11, Four Winns has matched its profile with practical design. Four Winns has also taken aim at the luxury end of this market, outfitting the HD 220 OB with small design touches and amenities that look to put the HD 220 OB at the head of its class.

Major Features

Swim Platform Lounge. The HD 220 OB has a walk-through transom back to a swim platform that is designed like a lounge: aft-facing bench seating with stainless steel cup holders overlooking a swim platform with comfortable non-skid surface and a hidden reboarding ladder.

Deep-Reach Ladder. The swim ladder on the HD 220 OB is stainless steel and is, as described by Four Winns, a “deep reach ladder.” It telescopes and is longer than your conventional reboarding ladder, which is a more user-friendly design and increases safety for younger and less-experienced swimmers.

Stable-Vee Hull. Developed by Four Winns in 1993 and introduced as a major innovation, the Stable-Vee Hull remains a very attractive piece of engineering. The stepped running surface reduces friction and drag while underway with the after-pods helping the boat plane quicker. The angle of rise in the boat’s hull creates a smooth ride, and the uniquely shaped chines give the boat a large, stable footprint. A hard-cranking turn is a great example of where its advantages show up -- the running surface clings to the water, staying flat for a more car-like feel.

Premium Materials. Not only are Four Winns boats meticulously designed with computer-assisted engineering geared toward ergonomic performance, but the execution of that design is carried forth with top-quality materials. Stainless steel in the cleats, lifting eyes, and rails means low maintenance and long-lasting performance. Copper wiring harnesses with a tin coating protect against saltwater corrosion over years of use. The comfort-ride seat that Four Winns boasts “may be the most comfortable marine seat ever,” utilizing a unique foam integrated suspension system that absorbs the impact caused by motion with side air vents keeping things cool and ventilated on long days under the hot sun.

Four Winns Custom Trailer, standard. For a 22’ sportboat like the HD 220 OB, a trailer is many times a definite necessity. Four Winns offers their trailer, made custom for the HD 220, as part of the standard package; no budgeting for the boat and finding an extra expense late in the game when a trailer becomes a necessity.

Enclosed Port-a-Potty Head. For many, this feature can be a game-changer. Depending on the nature of the trips you’re interested in for the HD 220 OB, the ability to have an enclosed head on board can really change and improve the profile of destinations and size of parties one can entertain.

Features Inspection

“Four

The bow seating with filler cushions not in place. Note the wraparound bolsters, the forward-facing backrests, and speaker in the gunwale.

Bow seating and storage. The bow of the HD 220 has the U-shaped seating section familiar on sportboats of this size. The seating is as comfortable as advertised -- perhaps not as clearly better than its competitors as the advertising would suggest, but it clearly prizes a soft, responsive ride and delivers for sure. The gunwales are lined with plush bolsters with two cutouts to port and starboard housing stereo speakers.

“Four

Bow seating section with filler cushions installed, creating a sun pad.

As is also familiar for these bow seating configurations, the center footwell space can be converted with a filler cushion to make one uniform “sun pad” surface. Additionally, an optional cocktail table can be installed (and easily removed). The table has cup holders installed in the surface.

“Four

Bow seating section with optional, removable table installed. Note the mount point and the cup holders.

“Four

The bow seating section with the storage highlighted, via the hinged seat-tops lifting up.

As is the case throughout the boat, the seating surfaces represent both accommodation and storage space. The seating panels in the bow lift up to reveal fiberglass-molded storage cubbies.

“Four

The swim ladder under bow hatch. Note the non-skid surface on platform.

The apex of the bow has a small swim platform, with non-skid surface and a telescoping “deep reach” reboarding ladder under a hatch in the middle. Stainless steel grab rails rest atop the gunwales to port and starboard. Access to the bow, comes via the flip-open windshield hatch.

Helm

A view of the cockpit. Note the helm and companion’s seats, both bucket-style with bolsters down. Note the cutouts in the back of the chairs.

Helm Seating and Dash. The helm seating on the HD 220 OB is the same Comfort Ride foam technology found throughout the boat only in bucket-seating, ergonomically precise form. As such, they are extremely comfortable and well-ventilated with flip-up bolsters and the ability to swivel.

“Four

The dash on the HD 220 OB. Note the upholstery. The touchscreen above the steering wheel is the optional Raymarine GPS.

The dash on the HD 220 OB has something of a luxury car design with a hand-fitted, top-stitched upholstery and precision-textured trim. Fuel gauge, hour meter, oil pressure, speedometer, tachometer, temperature gauge, and volt meter all come standard with an option to upgrade to a Raymarine A77 GPS.

“Four

A view of the enclosed head. Note -- not all features described by Four Winns as “standard” in the head (mirror, sink, faucet, wood floor) not seen here.

Enclosed head compartment for optional Port-a-Pottie. The door latch gives way to a fiberglass molded space with the Port-a-Potty style head and an overhead light.

“Four

The in-floor ski locker. Note the gas-assisted strut, as well as the rubber mat lining.

The center walk through between the captain and companion seats also has in-floor storage. Typically this is used for water-skis, but, in any event, it is one of the larger storage spaces on the boat with gas-assisted struts and a rubber mat lining.

Cockpit

“Four

The cockpit with seating storage revealed beneath.

Seating with storage. The seating in the HD 220 OB’s cockpit is U-shaped, wrapping from both port and starboard back and along the transom. This “U” is only interrupted at the starboard side corner by a transom walk-through to the stern, via fiberglass-molded steps. The seating is bench-style with Aquaflex vinyl upholstery. The port and starboard-side seating is “backed” by the gunwale plush bolsters with the transom seating up against a fuller backrest.

“Four

The cockpit seating area. Note the transom walk-through space, as well as the optional snap-on carpet on the deck.

“Four

The optional cockpit cocktail table with cup holders in the surface. Note the mounting point, just under the seating.

An optional cocktail table can be installed in the seating area via a mount on the side of the seating.

“Four

The cockpit storage includes space for cooler storage in addition to a built-in cooler as well.

The seating is on hinges that lift up and reveal storage below. The HD 220 comes with a built-in cooler in the cockpit, as well as a dedicated space for a carry-on. The main cockpit also has stainless steel cup holders, stainless steel grab rails, and a water intrusion management system.

Stern

“Four

The aft-facing lounge seating, looking over the swim platform. Note the reboarding ladder to starboard under a latch.

Aft Seating Lounge. Mirroring the backrest along the transom in the cockpit, the stern has an aft-facing bench seating in Aquaflex vinyl upholstery. The seating has two armrests with built-in stainless steel cup holders.

This seating looks out over the rear swim platform, covered in a non-skid surface. To starboard is a latch over the swim ladder, which is a “deep reach” design that extends further into the water, giving more ladder to grab against for increased safety and convenience.

The swim platform comes with an optional transom shower as well.

Watersports/Entertainment

The HD 220 OB comes standard with a stereo with iPod/iPhone connectivity and four speakers throughout the boat. Of course, an option exists to upgrade this with JL audio speakers and subwoofers, as well as a remote with transom display.

The HD 220 OB is outfitted for watersports -- a tow line point, reboarding ladder, and copious water toy storage all point to this, as does the boat’s power and handling. A major upgrade to this end exists as well, as the HD 220 OB can be outfitted with a wakeboard tower. This wakeboard tower itself comes with an optional colored Bimini top, as well as further stereo upgrade via two more premium JL stereo speakers.

Further, Four Winns offers the Turbo Swing Ski Tow as an upgrade, along with board racks for further water sports storage. The Turbo Swing is an attractive option -- working with the outboard motor, it is a C-shaped tow point that does not restrict the anchor point of the tow line to just one point, instead swinging across the wake as the boat whips the skiier/tuber back and forth.

Performance

The Four Winns HD 220 OB has a LOA of 22’1” (6.73 m) and a beam of 8’5” (2.57 m). With an empty weight of 3,530 lbs. (1,601 kg), 98% fuel and 2 people onboard, we had an estimated test weight of 4,208 lbs. (1,909 kg).

Four Winns HD 220 OB running

The Four Winns HD 220 OB hit a top speed of 49.1 mph in our test.

With the 250-hp Mercury Verado outboard powering our test boat, we reached a top speed of 49.1 mph at 2500 rpm. Best economic cruise came in at 4000 rpm and 29.7 mph. It was at that speed that the 10.2 gph fuel burn translated into 2.9 mpg and a range of 116 miles.

Acceleration

The Four Winns HD 220 OB with a 250-hp Mercury Verado outboard came up on plane in 3.7 seconds, reached 20 mph in 6.3 seconds, and continued through 30 in 9.3 seconds. All with minimal bowrise.

Handling

Her handling was exemplary and certainly consistent with what we’ve come to expect from Four Winns proprietary Stable Vee Hull design. On acceleration, there’s minimal bowrise with no interruption to the forward sightlines. She carved through turns with a solid feel to the water and no slip. Crossing wakes showed no pounding and a clean transition across the chop. All in all it’s a comfortable-handling boat with gentle characteristics that families will appreciate.
