Hinckley Picnic Boat 37 MKIII: Jet Driven Open Air Express Yacht

It was 25 years ago when Hinckley created the original Picnic Boat and started a whole new class of yacht. Today, the line has been refined and improved upon to the point where they represent an elegant entertainment platform.  

Still sporting a “downeast” look, the elegant woodwork that has become the hallmark of the brand is still ever present in this Picnic Boat 37 MKIII, and the dedication to the craft shows all throughout.  

The timeless beauty of a Hinckley shows clearly in this beautiful yacht.  The curved tumblehome, the varnished transom and the wood trim all show an elevated level of fit-and-finish.

An easy argument could be made that Hinckley makes what is among the best-looking boats on the water.

The beauty of the expertly-finished teak seems to morph into seating throughout the yacht.

Inside, there’s plenty of seating, whether the desire is to be out in the open or under the protection of the hardtop and side windows.

The forward seats can swing around to blend in with the gathering just behind.  Notice the overhead grab handles, including at the trailing edge of the hardtop -- clearly an ornamental design feature.

The jet drive will give the 37 a 35-knot top speed and a cruise of 32, so don’t let the image of a lazy afternoon picnic lead to the belief that this boat is only for put-putting around a secluded waterway.  While that’s certainly a possibility, the 370-hp Yanmar V8 has the muscle to move this boat right along.  And her shallow 2’1” (.63 m) draft makes her ideal for exploring little hidey-holes and secluded bays.  

The 37 makes an ideal couple’s boat with a single helm seat and a single observer’s seat just across.

The galley is right at the entry to the cabin, keeping it convenient for serving.

While not suited for a gourmet meal, the modest galley is well-equipped for the weekend getaways.

The island berth is accessed from both sides.  Storage is to the sides and below.

The head is located to starboard and boasts its fair amount of teak trim work.  An opening port adds ventilation.

As attractive as she is on the water, she’s even more so inside.  The teak trim of a Hinckley never ceases to impress and charm.  The cockpit includes fore and aft opposing seating.  Just ahead are two more benches, one to each side.  A table converts the area into an informal dining area under the protection of the hardtop.  The companionway to the cabin is center-mounted.  Below, the 37 speaks of a couple’s weekend getaway.  It includes a galley and enclosed wet-head.  An island berth is mounted forward.
