Brief Summary
Intrepid Powerboats took their 475 Sport Yacht hull and redesigned it to create a center console that’s 47’6” (14.48 m) long and 13’8” (4.17 m) at the beam. All that room makes for some exciting features like circular seating for eight in the bow, ample room for six captain’s chairs under an expansive hardtop and a cabin that’s much more than a place to stow extra gear. The cockpit has enough room and choices of optional configurations to satisfy fishermen, divers, and boaters of all stripes.

Boat Inspection
The Stern
The 475 Panacea’s stern provides a full 8” of walkway forward of the engine wells. Note the clean installation with all connections in one tube and no SeaStar steering arms impeding engine tilt. The walkway is accessible by steps down at each side. The starboard step has a flush-mounted, deck filler for 25 gallons (95 L) of diesel fuel to run the 8 kW Fisher Panda generator that comes as part of the standard package. A 12 kW upgrade is available as an option.
The shore power plug is located above the port side step. Our test boat had an optional shore power upgrade to 50 amps from 30 amps.
Take a look at this stern anchoring system. The anchor rests on a roller that’s built into a swim step. Disconnect the safety line and feed out anchor rode from the anchor locker that’s accessible from inside the cockpit. Retrieve the anchor right back into the roller.
Operator Caveat: We highly recommend that this anchor only be used in tandem with the bow anchor in special circumstances. Never use it to anchor only by the stern offshore.
The Cockpit
Intrepid provides two options for securing dock lines and fenders along the topside of the gunnel just forward of the transom on both sides. A pop-up cleat and a hawse hole in the deck, protected by an anti-chafing stainless steel ring, which leads to a hull-mounted cleat inside the cockpit.
Personalization in the Cockpit
13’8” (4.17 m) of beam makes for a lot of cockpit real estate. Intrepid expects boat buyers to design that space according to their individual needs so there really isn’t a standard configuration. Our test boat had a simple fold-out bench seat in the transom. Another boat might have racks for SCUBA tanks or fishing gear, live bait tanks, additional seating or tables.
Our test boat had an optional, cockpit cover/sun shade that’s extremely handy for dockside shelter or shielding people from the sun while drifting or anchored.
With outboard engines, space under the deck is free for some enticing options for storage or locating things out of sight. Hinged, guttered cockpit hatches allow easy access to the entire space below the cockpit.
The Pump Room. Opening the hatch just forward of the transom reveals a compartment bisected by the boat’s transom bracing. A forward cockpit compartment houses some of the boat’s important plumbing components, including an automatic bilge pump, raw water intake, water separator fuel filters, fuel shut-off valves, and engine fuel primers. All hoses are double clamped.
The deck compartment along the port gunnel is a standard fishbox, which is plumbed overboard with a macerator. In this boat, the forward centerline compartment houses the Seakeeper stabilizing gyro. Icemaker and roll out refrigerator behind the second row of seating are optional.
Swing-In Dive Door with Fold-Out Ladder
No Intrepid cockpit would be complete without its signature side door. Intrepid invented the concept a dozen years ago and now it has been embraced by much of the industry. The door can be used for dockside boarding. And the fold-up, powder coated re-boarding ladder couldn’t be handier, or easier to deploy.
On Deck
The distance from the aft cockpit sole to the top of the gunnel cap is 29” (.74 m). Rather than dragging a step stool around the cockpit, a two-level step folds out of a hidden compartment just forward of the dive door to provide safe, easy access to the gunnel.
The cockpit deck and all connected deck surfaces are on the same level. There are no steps up or down, so there are no tripping hazards.
Moving forward, identical deck hatches on both sides of the seating console provide some valuable storage space. The Panacea makes excellent use of the wide gunwales with fold-out storage bins and more under deck storage. On the port side of the seating console is a drawer for Plano tackle boxes.
There are a total of four, 10” (.25 m) pop-up cleats on each side. Even though the deck fillers are flush mounted, Intrepid chooses to hide them under hinged doors. Notice how the access door matches the contour of the gunnel cap and nearly disappears.
The gunnel height amidships is 43” above the deck, creating plenty of room for rod storage as well as security offshore when conditions get sloppy.
All of the deck hatches have gutters around the edges that drain overboard. The entire cockpit is self-bailing.
Sculptured Fiberglass. The 475 Panacea has a white powder coated rail inboard on the cabin top. Another hallmark of Intrepid are the intricate and costly fiberglass contours, reliefs, soft radius corners and toe kicks, all created simply to make the boat look more pleasing to a connoisseur’s eye.
The Bow
The double sun pad forward of the helm station measures 4’3” (1.30 m) across and a full 6’ (1.83 m) long. Each side has a four position, tilt up backrest. A round, opening deck hatch sits between the backrests.
The hardtop on this 475 Panacea spreads to nearly the full beam of the boat and Intrepid has chosen to support this massive hardtop with swept back supports affixed to the gunwales. This limits working fish to the aft cockpit, which is undoubtedly why it is so large and unencumbered.
The top is another area where the customer can choose from a wide range of options. For example, Intrepid will configure the boat with an arch, a conventional T-top, a full tower, half tower with full upper stations or almost anything else a buyer can dream up.
A forward facing bench seat lies just forward of the cabin-top sun pad. The bow has circular seating for up to eight people and a retractable table. When the table goes down, insert cushions pop in to create another, larger sun pad. A manually operated pedestal comes standard. Our test boat had the power option. Cap-mounted beverage holders that double as rod holders sit above the circular seating.
Ground Tackle
A double door, anchor locker with full stainless steel hardware and gas spring lift support provides access of the space beyond the bow seating. An optional freshwater washdown in the anchor locker comes in handy for keeping salt and mud off ground tackle.
Our test boat had the optional horizontally mounted Muir windlass with five chafing strips to keep the chain from damaging fiberglass. A 10” (.25 m) cleat mounted inside the locker provides a convenient and secure attachment point for anchor rode. Our boat had windlass controls in the anchor locker and at the helm station.
Deck storage compartments seem to be everywhere on this boat. Here’s another one between the forward-facing, cabin seat and the circular, bow seating.
Freeboard
From the waterline to the gunnel cap at the stern is 3’10” (1.17 m). The same measurement at midships is about a foot higher at 4’11” (1.50 m). By the time you get to the bow, the freeboard measures 5’10” (1.78 m), a full two feet higher than in the stern.
The Main Cabin
A sliding hatch on the starboard side of the cabin provides access below, four steps down. Details like the shape of the hatch and the design of the locking handle help make the 475 Panacea both beautiful and safe.
The cabin height is 6’6” (1.98 m) just beyond the bottom step. To the immediate right, a handrail provides security at a place where a lot of people need stability. The teak and holly sole comes standard.
The Galley
The galley is located along the wall directly across from the companionway stairs. Counter tops in the galley and the head are made of Corian. The under mounted galley sink and flush mounted electric cooktop make it easier to keep the countertop clean.
All the drawers in the cabin have Blum hardware and are lined with stainless steel. The microwave comes as part of the standard equipment package, and the cedar-lined hanging locker is located just below the microwave. All the cabinetry is finished with high gloss varnish.
Two windows above the galley provide natural light. Find more storage under the window. A refrigerator with a door that swings open to the galley sits under the cooktop. More counter space and storage can be found directly across from the galley.
The Helm
We knew that Intrepid had yet to install all of the boat’s electronics on our test boat. The instrument panel is 4’7” (1.39 m) across and 1’4” (.41 m) high, the forward display panel has more than enough space to mount two 24” (.61 m) screens or three 15” (.38 m) displays.
The tilt wheel is placed on the centerline in front of the middle captain’s chair. Intrepid will move the wheel to one side or the other according to the buyer’s needs.
Placement and selection of most control panel components will depend on the options a buyer selects and his placement decisions. In this case, he chose to place the Yamaha control binnacle to the right of the wheel, and the Helm Master joystick and the bow thruster control to the left of it. Trim tabs were below and on either side of the wheel.
A clearly labeled, well-laid out operator’s electrical panel occupies an angled space to the left of the wheel. This feature allows the skipper to operate all the lights, bilge pumps and other electrical components without having to enlist the help of a crewmember or leave the wheel.
Both sides of the dash panel have locking storage compartments. The Ritchie, mechanical compass sits right above the wheel, at eye level, where it can be most useful.
Our test boat came equipped with a clear, 5’5” (1.65 m) wide by 3’5” (1.04 m) high acrylic windscreen. A single arm pantograph windshield wiper clears rain and spray to ensure visibility. The center section curves fairly significantly at the sides, but we found zero distortion.
Binoculars, cell phones, and navigational reference material can sit securely and conveniently above the windscreen. Visibility from the captain’s chair on the 475 Panacea is largely unobstructed.
Helm Seating
The helm has a two-row seating plan that fills in the area between the helm console and the cockpit. The second row of three seats were identical forward-facing, fixed seats with bolsters and armrests.
Shock-Absorbing Seats. Our test boat opted for the Shockwave S5 marine suspension system to enhance comfort when riding in rough water at high speed.
Even though it was not particularly rough during our test, the Shockwave S5 seats added welcome comfort. This system added a noticeable pressurized resistance to the cushion that will clearly make a difference in heavy seas.
The Accommodations
A dinette that seats five is located forward of the galley. An electrically operated motor lowers the table. Fill in the table section with cushions to create a V berth. Intrepid provides new owners with bedspreads and pillow shams.
The Head
The private head compartment with a separate shower is located at the bottom of the companionway stairs, to the left. The toilet is electrically powered.
An electric water heater delivers hot water to the galley sink, head sink, and separate shower stall. The 475 Panacea has a freshwater capacity of 130 gallons (492 L).
The right-hand mirror opens to reveal the digital 12-volt breaker panel control system, a clever use of space.
Construction
Intrepid pioneered the technique of fully infused resin hulls, making boats 20-40% lighter, stronger and more fuel-efficient. A specialized, low-density resin with unmatched adhesion minimizes and, in some instances, eliminates VOCs making it extremely environmentally friendly. Hand-laid uni- and multi-directional fiberglass fabrics are engineered to withstand the various stresses and loads that different parts of the boat must endure in prolonged exposure to rough seas.
Intrepid’s sculptured fiberglass work is another one of its signature features and is one of the very best in the boating industry.
Performance
Since Intrepid does not weigh its boats and every boat is different, we have no precise idea how much the Intrepid 475 Panacea weighs. Our test boat was powered by four Yamaha engines that develop 425-hp between 5000 and 6000 rpm. Our test boat was fitted with 21” x 16-3/8”, 3 blade props.
We recorded a top speed of 60.7 mph or 52.8 knots at 6100 rpm.
Best cruise came at 3500 rpm where she averaged 30.4 mph, burned 43.8 gph getting .7 miles per gallon for a range of 437 statute miles and 380.2 nautical miles, both with a 10% fuel reserve in its 700-gallon (2,650 L) optional aluminum fuel tank.
In acceleration tests, we recorded 0 to planing in 5.3 seconds, 0 to 20 mph in 6.5 seconds, hitting 30 mph in 10 seconds flat.

Observations
After spending a day on a Panacea, it’s clear the boat will make many discerning, and wealthy boaters happy. It has lots of space, lots of power, lots of ways to change the layout and gear to suit individual needs. Intrepid has always been at the pinnacle of the center console pyramid due largely to its superb glass work, its nearly total customization, and its innovations. The 475 Panacea is another example of how Intrepid holds that coveted position.
