SEA DOO SWITCH

PWC Meets Pontoon Boat

By Capt. Ken Kreisler

SeaDoo Switch on water

Speed and agility come standard aboard the exciting Sea Doo Switch.

As thrilling to drive as a PWC, and combined with the profile of a pontoon platform, our test Sea Doo Switch, at 20’5” in length with a 7’8” beam, offers plenty of deck space for extra passengers and gear.

The excitement starts when you sit at the control center and grab onto the motorcycle-like handlebars. Throttle up and hold on.

Vessel Inspection

As with every watercraft it designs and engineers, Sea Doo made sure its lineup of Switch PWC’s meets every standard of quality and safety the company has built its foundation on. With its pontoon-like platform, the Switch takes on a different profile and ability to entertain several guests.

The open hatch also reveals the Sea Doo Switch's rugged and resistant to deterioration and corrosion Polytec frame, which is found throughout its construction, and adds to the rigidity of the boat.

The Polytec material also surrounds the platform with a rigid rail, adding to the tight construction of the three sections making up the boat, and found throughout and responsible for its solid ride. Note the wakeboard holder affixed to the starboard side and the Bimini frame.

A Word About Performance

The DNA of Sea Doo runs deep into providing exciting and outstanding performance across its entire model lineup. With the Switch models, available in 17-, 19- and our 20’5” test boat, that same exhilaration is a major part of the experience once you take the wheel and set out for a day of fun on the water. Whether tubing, skiing, or just zipping along, a memorable time out for all is guaranteed. Our test Switch was powered by a 300-hp Rotax jet engine and the day saw air temperatures at 79° with 70% relative humidity. Wind was mild at a gentle 5 knots.

engine

The Rotax 300-hp jet engine is the heart and soul of the exciting performance delivered by the Sea Doo Switch. One of the more outstanding features is the iDF pump system, for Intelligent Debris Free, which, at the touch of a button, automatically clears debris from the intake by reversing the thrust before putting the boat into forward gear. This system is controlled by the 7” touchscreen and will inform the driver when the engine has been cleared and is ready for safe use. The operator never has to leave the seat.

Engaging the system is as easy as pushing a button. The iDF will take over from there. An electronic ‘beep’ will indicate the system is ready to employ and by using the START button, you will hear the process beginning.

The large touchscreen, here indicating the iDF system, once initiated  and now completed, is telling the driver the engine is ready for safe operation. This screen also has an informative menu of topics, cruise control, tach, stereo, and includes zoom in/out navigation, and three operational modes including sport, eco, and normal, enabling safety and comfort while underway as per prevailing conditions.

Using the appropriate controls on the handlebars, we hit a WOT speed of 39 mph at 8000 rpm. During hole shots, we noted 0-10 mph in 2.5 seconds, 0-20 mph in 8.5 seconds, and 30 mph in 30 seconds. Tight turns at speed were adrenaline-charged and under control as were straight speed runs. Past PWC experience is beneficial but with its short learning curve, confidence in all operations of the Sea Doo Switch will quickly find any operator enjoying the thrills and on-water activities to the max.

Given the excellent conditions, acceleration was outstanding with  nimble handing and instantaneous reaction to the helm.

Given its easy handling and control, and utilizing both throttle and 'braking' features, alternating reverse and forward buttons on the handlebar controls, soft and easy docking maneuvers on the Sea Doo Switch are quite intuitive and quickly mastered.

Summary

Exciting on-water experiences, from in-your-face activities, including tubing and skiing, to a cruising day out aboard a unique, sensational PWC by way of a pontoon platform, is all available at the touch of a button on the motorcycle-like handlebars. With deck and seating space for plenty of guests and participants, the Sea Doo Switch offers opportunities like no other PWC can. Rugged construction, sparkling performance powered by a 300-hp Rotax jet engine and supplying nimble and controlled operations, and with accessories such as a 5.3 gallon semi-rigid cooler, adjustable table, aft floating mat holder, double Bimini top sleeve, and rod holders, among many others, will make any Sea Doo Switch a personal statement of ownership.
