What You Need to Know  About the Vicem 95

Vicem 95

The Turkish yard, Vicem, has a long history, spanning over three decades, of building vessels that honor traditional boat design and construction. When seeing them in person, perhaps at a boat show, their classic lines truly stand out amidst many contemporary designs. This enduring aesthetic is deeply rooted in the elegant Turkish Gulets, a heritage beautifully carried forward in the cold-molded Vicem 95.

Recently arriving in Australia, a Vicem 95 instantly caught the eye. Her striking Awlgrip light blue finish makes a bold statement even at the dock, and her shapely hull boasts a hint of classic tumblehome, along with a practical rubbing strake near the waterline – a thoughtful detail for navigating tougher waters.

Striking Aesthetics

This blend of aesthetics and a truly seaworthy approach is what draws experienced boaters to the brand. Owners often seek more range and liveability while still appreciating that classic build era. For example, one Australian owner, moving up from a Grand Banks 72, specifically sought an offshore-capable vessel that could accommodate family adventures and also be chartered for extended voyages, like those to the Kimberly or Pacific islands. This capability is supported by her impressive 2,000-plus nautical mile range at average cruising speeds.

Stepping Aboard

Stepping aboard a vessel should feel effortless, and the Vicem 95 truly delivers. Her expansive swim platform, clearly designed with active owners in mind, serves as an ideal water sports hub, ready to launch tenders with the flybridge davit. From there, a convenient bulkhead door leads directly to surprisingly generous crew quarters – a thoughtful touch often lacking even on larger yachts.

Ascending to the fully enclosed aft cockpit, one immediately appreciates its versatility for various climates. An intuitive set of stairs then guides you seamlessly to the flybridge, creating an easy, natural flow throughout the boat. The spacious cockpit effortlessly accommodates a large dining table, and notably, the galley is positioned forward in the salon rather than below decks. This 'galley-up' arrangement perfectly suits a family-oriented boat, encouraging interaction with everyone on board.

The exterior of this area is framed by a wide, beautifully varnished taffrail, signaling the dignified presence of a true gentleman’s yacht. Moving inside through the broad aft salon door, guests are greeted by a light oak interior, where comfortable lounge seating and a forward galley with adjoining dinette combine. Vertical bulkheads and expansive windows, paired with the light wood finish and mood lighting, create an ambiance that feels both contemporary and timeless – a truly inviting space from which to watch the world go by.

Artisans

Stepping aboard, you immediately notice the attention to detail. Every cupboard and protruding surface boasts beautifully rounded ends, a clear sign of the meticulous, hand-finished quality that's a hallmark of the Istanbul yard. The warm wood-laid floor guides you into the inviting U-shaped galley, which feels perfectly integrated into the whole living area. It’s a space where several family members can comfortably join in meal prep, thanks to a four-ring Bosch convection cooktop and oven, complemented by a huge double-door fridge and adjoining freezer. There’s even a cozy coffee bar with high chairs, so guests can gather and chat while the chef works. And for those extended trips, a convenient washer/dryer is tucked away in the crew quarters.

This galley's thoughtful placement near the inside helm means an easy flow for anyone handling duties or simply enjoying time together while underway. The helm itself features two comfortable bucket seats, ensuring the command station is never a solitary spot, and sturdy doors on each side offer quick access to the deck. The light oak paneling throughout the bridge creates a wonderfully warm and private yacht ambiance, a real departure from a more commercial feel. All the essential navigation gear is right at your fingertips, including electronic throttles for the twin MTU 1600bhp shaft drives and handy fore and aft thruster controls. It’s worth noting the MTU remote hand-held, which can be plugged into various parts of the vessel, making docking incredibly drama-free. Charting and radar are handled by crisp Garmin 12-inch screens, complemented by autopilot and satellite communications.

Another big win for a busy skipper is the nearby steps on the portside leading directly up to the flybridge – a smart touch for all-weather movement between decks. The flybridge itself is truly expansive, possibly the largest in its category. It's clear that function was chosen over just form here, as evidenced by the clever dinghy dock with a powerful davit tucked away at the back. Yet, there's still ample room for entertaining forward of that, with fine dining easily accommodated under the hardtop. For cocktail hour, a large wet bar, U-shaped lounge, and elegant mahogany table beckon, all set atop the comfortable, thick teak cladding underfoot.

Up front, the steering console on the starboard side mirrors the functionality of the lower helm. A minor design point to consider might be having it on the port side, which could offer broader visibility for certain berthing scenarios. Instruments are well-shaded by the hardtop, and a visor helps reduce windage. Visibility from up here is fantastic, enhanced by the slim, strong stainless struts supporting the hardtop, which wisely minimize any obstruction.

Accomidation Spaces

Below deck on the Vicem 95, her four-cabin layout immediately conveys a sense of generous space for everyone aboard. The midship owner's suite feels particularly well-considered for offshore comfort; positioned low in the hull, elongated portholes keep it bright without feeling confined, and a king-sized bed promises restful sleep. Thoughtfully placed twin bathrooms behind provide an extra layer of quiet from any engine sounds. Throughout, the single-level main deck boasts tall headroom, inviting lounge areas with ample seating, and discreet, practical storage – a reflection of sensible design over mere show.

Guests are equally well-catered to. The forepeak cabin offers an island bed and impressively voluminous headroom, surrounded by ample storage and wardrobes, making it a comfortable berth. Her spacious ensuite even features natural ventilation. The sturdy, purpose-built portlights throughout reflect solid naval architecture, ensuring seaworthiness, and a skylight offers a sensible emergency exit. Completing the accommodations are two additional guest cabins: one with twin singles and a Pullman, and another with a queen-sized double, each with its own private ensuite.

Thoughtful Deck Spaces

When you're out on an yacht, you need options for both sun and shade, and the Vicem 95 delivers exactly that. She’s designed with inviting sun-drenched areas like her oversized hydraulic swim platform and a truly spacious foredeck lounge. But when you need a break from the rays, her aft deck and flybridge offer ample shade. Moving around her feels secure, thanks to high bulwarks and protective overhangs, much like what you'd find on a sturdy trawler. Underfoot, thick teak cladding provides superb grip and comfort for bare feet, perfect before you stretch out on the twin sunbeds for some relaxed bow riding or lazy days at anchor. And for peace of mind, the ground tackle setup is seriously robust, featuring twin vertical Australian Muir VRC4500 windlasses and deep anchor lockers. Docking is kept simple with Muir capstans, wide fairleads, and huge cleating – minimizing any drama when coming alongside.

The Heritage of Her Hull

Back in the 1980s, a Turkish businessman named Sebahattin Hafizoglu fell in love with the historical schooners of the Bosporus – those beautiful Turkish Gulets. He had a vision: to bring their classic charm into modern times, but with cutting-edge construction. That's how Vicem was founded in 1991, pioneering state-of-the-art cold-molded wood and epoxy techniques. It was a brilliant way to blend artisan skill with modern methods.

So, when you look at the Vicem 95's hull, you're seeing four cross-ply layers of mahogany plywood, all impregnated with the robust West Resin System, complete with special reinforcing and a strong collision bulkhead at the bow, encased in stainless steel. Inside, the hull boasts a remarkably smooth finish with stringers and frames every 0.6m, creating a structure that's not only incredibly rigid but also noticeably quieter and, many argue, more sea-kindly than those made from other materials. While cold-molding is their signature, this adaptable yard can also build in GRP or even steel if an owner desires. Ultimately, the Vicem 95 stands as an impressive custom vessel – proudly Turkish-made, yet in many ways, she carries that understated, solid, and functional elegance often found in well-designed Australian vessels.

Systems

A vessel of this size naturally comes with a host of complex systems, often managed by a professional crew and specialist technicians. This holds true for the Vicem 95, which, interestingly, combines a fairly traditional, robust design – like conventional wiring – with some genuinely smart modern features. Take her intelligent Humphree vertical stabilizers, for example. These systems are clever, operating within the boat's beam and functioning almost like a rudder to provide stabilization, both while cruising and at anchor.

Access to the engine room is straightforward, via a substantial bulkhead door in the crew quarters. Inside, you'll find it well-appointed, dominated by a hearty Onan 27 kva generator set in the middle, flanked by those capable MTU 10-cylinder common rail, sequentially turbocharged diesels. For any vessel, especially one designed for extended voyages, good ventilation and fireproofing are paramount, and the V95 certainly doesn't disappoint here. The deep bilges are also reassuringly equipped to handle any unexpected water ingress. The fuel system itself is impressive, featuring six baffled tanks to manage her considerable 16,277-liter capacity, complete with a polishing system – a thoughtful addition for dealing with varying fuel qualities encountered on foreign voyages. Plus, she sensibly includes traditional sight gauges alongside electric readouts for ultimate peace of mind. Other notable equipment includes a large-capacity Stella Aquarius watermaker (240 l/phr) and powerful Dometic 720,000 BTU air conditioning units, ensuring comfort wherever her travels may lead.
