Vessel Inspection
Being a cat, and able to bring the amidships beam very far forward, allows the World Cat 235TE to present the kind of deck space not found on a monohull with the same LOA.
With wide walkways to either side, there is unimpeded room to get that big fish landed from bow to stern or for family and friends to easily and safely get around while on the hook at a favorite anchorage for the day.
Aft Section & Cockpit
Our review starts aft and reveals several important features aboard the World Cat 235TE.
Robust and sturdy, the 235TE's swim ladder features a magnetic locking mechanism and support frame, typically found on professional dive boats for safe water entry and exit. This detail highlights World Cat’s commitment to safety and quality craftsmanship.
Our test boat was powered by a pair of 150-hp Yamaha outboards, which proved to be quite efficient and provided the right amount of muscle. The cat hull allows for a centerline swim platform.
Helm
The helm station offers plenty of usable space for the Garmin touchscreen plotter and Yamaha screen, with controls for the JL audio system, VHF, pushbutton switches, optional Vetus windlass and start/stop for the port and starboard engines all within easy reach.
Our test boat was equipped with the optional 150-hp and comes with electronic steering and electronic controls. A joystick is also included in that package.
The 235TE's T-Top is sturdy and has spreader lights and five rocket launchers on its aft end. Grabrails abound as does overhead LED lighting. An upgrade to a black powder-coated finish including the leaning post frame is available as is a pair of Gemlux 18’ collapsible hybrid outriggers.
Bow
The bow design allows the beam to extend further forward, creating extra space in this area and providing wide, easy access around the boat.
Performance
A cat hull is different than a monohull boat. It goes far beyond the obvious that there are two in the former. Spread out and carrying the wider beam more forward, boats such as the World Cat 235TE are able to present a larger footprint and generally offer more lateral stability, have a shallower draft, are somewhat faster due to reduced drag and an increase in buoyancy and, depending on size and function, offer more deck space and living space.
Our test boat, with a weight of 5,908 lbs., two passengers and 42% of her 120-gallon fuel capacity, set out with a 5-10 knot wind and a calm sea state. Our air temp was 85 with matching humidity.
She got up on plane quickly, with a hole-shot of 2.8 seconds to reach 10 mph, and 7.1 seconds to get to 30 mph. We hit a top speed of 48.5 mph while turning 5600 rpm, and a best cruise of 23 mph at 3000 rpm. Here, with a total fuel burn of 2.9 mpg, we calculated a range of 306 statute miles, or 265 nautical miles, both with a 10% fuel reserve. She handled tight turns and other maneuvers with assurance and when we trimmed one engine out of the water, running our 235 TE on the other in a pretend ‘get-home’ situation, we reached 27+ mph.
Summary
With its well-documented past and present successes with cat design, fastidious attention to using the latest construction techniques and outfitting each boat to match its owners’ needs, the company offers the World Cat 235TE as she joins a much-admired lineup, bringing with her own identity.
She is a well-equipped out-of-the-box boat and adding a string of options will make her that much more admired. If you are new to this kind of boat, together with her handling, performance, and, due to those engines being so far apart, can supply relative ease of docking in close-quarters situations, you are urged to get your hands on the wheel and get out on a sea trial. The experience will be well worth your time.
Remember, life is better on a boat!
