E-TEC G2 300 HP

Brief Summary

The second generation Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 horsepower outboard engine has been redesigned to deliver its power from only 210 cu. in., while still complying with EPA 3 Star and European Union emission regulations. In this era of technological expansion, Evinrude has chosen the path of engineering logic -- and that is the development and refinement of 2-stroke power.

Since 2-stroke engines produce twice as many power strokes as a 4-stroke engine does, there is twice the power output per revolution. Meaning the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 HP is able to accelerate faster and give quick, low-end torque from a 558 lb. (253 kg) package. This direct-injected 2-stroke engine gives a greater power-to-weight ratio than a 4-stroke engine and there are fewer parts to maintain since there are no valves, cams, or timing chains, etc.

Performance

Our test of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 HP took place on a cold day in Florida aboard a 24’7” (7.49 m) center console bay boat. Equipped with a large T-top, 50 gallons (189 L) of fuel in the tank and two people we had a test weight of 3,934 lbs. (1,784 kg). Weather and seas were calm with a slight chop.

Nailing the throttle, we got on plane in 4.5 seconds and arrived at 30 mph in 6.8 seconds. Optimal cruise speed was found at 3500 rpm and resulted in a 4.03 miles per gallon or 7.7 gallons an hour at 31 mph. Wide-open throttle resulted in a top speed of 51.0 mph, burning 24.25 gallons per hour.

Fashion Conscious

The shape of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300’s cowling is the first thing that grabs one's attention. The thermoplastic, multi-piece shell is far lighter than the old-school heavy fiberglass hood design and is built around a main center section, with quick remove side, and top panels. For service, the top panel removes to gain access to the oil-injection reservoir, the starter jumper points, and the flywheel lift point. The insulated side panels are easily removed by rotating six captive screws.

The cowling panels are available in five color choices; along with 14 different accent decal colors, giving boat owners a color-matched look. Interestingly, because of the huge combinations available, Evinrude dealers sell the motors without the panels, and buyers order the color combos at the point of sale.

Engine

The new engine design starts with a block and heads that have been reconfigured to maximize combustion, reduce fuel consumption, and effectively lower emissions. The 300 horsepower is from a normally aspirated 3.4l, 74-degree V6 that will rev to 6000 rpm and turns a reduction gear case of 1.85:1. The bore and stroke of the cylinders measure 3.85” by 3.00’’.

All cylinders are fed by direct, in-cylinder fuel injection. Fuel is delivered inside the combustion chamber, rather than in the intake manifold, resulting in more accurate fuel delivery. A special electronic oil-injection system squirts lube at the same time to lubricate the engine's internal components. The resulting combustion is fired by BRP’s Fast Rise Inducted Ignition system that produces a higher energy, longer duration spark for improved fuel burn.

Drive

The gear-case for the lower unit has also been redesigned to be more streamlined while incorporating a larger gear set and electronic shift mechanism. The larger gears and bearings give increased durability, and allow larger props to be used that give more thrust. The digital shift system eliminates cables and linkage that are now replaced by a small solenoid in the lower gear case that does the work. The Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 HP engines are  available in 20”, 25” or 30” shaft lengths that incorporate additional water inlets for increased flow.

This gear case cut-away shows the motors shifting mechanism and clutch.

Evinrude has also simplified the prop selection process for the G2 by minimizing all the different combinations of blades, diameter, pitch, etc. Part of that might just be smart business, but the other part is the design of the prop. The motor’s new prop design features adjustable ports that can be fine-tuned to adapt to the boat’s changing performance needs.

Electronic Engine Controls

Evinrude’s new electronics package uses what they call ICON. It is a fully integrated engine computer with digital shift and throttle controls, along with three programmed hydraulic steering modes. The system offers i-Trim, an auto-trim feature for increased fuel economy and an RPM tune that lets users set a specific engine speed for greater control during cruising or trolling. The system’s monitors are available in 3.5” color screen and 4.3” or 7” color touch-screen displays and can integrate with third party peripherals for total helm customization.

Servicing

The Evinrude E-TEC G2 has no dealer scheduled maintenance for 5 years or 500 hours, which ever comes first. The electronic oil level indicator is located at the helm and provides visual and audible indicators should the motors built-in two-gallon reservoir start to run low. The maintenance free, magneto-style charging system produces 133 Amps with an allotment of 50 Amps being directed to the boat's house battery and electrical components. The Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 HP is also equipped with a very handy engine-fogging feature that occurs at the touch of a button, safeguarding motor storage for next season.

Filling the oil reservoir is performed by removing the top cowling panel for quick access to the fill port.

With the starboard side panel removed, the fuel filter can be serviced and the drive’s gear lube level can be checked.

Integral Steering Mechanism

The Evinrude E-TEC G2 platform features Dual-Axis Rigging that is comprised of a pair of rotary actuators (one for steering, one for trim) that are built into the outboard's mounting bracket. Designers have eliminated the vulnerable steering rack located in the engine well, in addition to the exposed plumbing.

The evolutionary transom mount on the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 unclutters the motor well and makes water access safer.

This see-through model shows the steering actuator on the Dual-Axis Rigging.

The Dynamic Power Steering allows three levels of programmable steering feedback adjustment in order to custom-tailor the boat's steering performance.  At slow speeds there is more steering assistance and higher speeds being progressively buffered per the chosen mode. Boats with twin-engines can opt to use the joystick controller that integrates with the ICON’s electronic throttle and shift to give greater maneuverability in tight situations.

Trim

The Dual Axis Rigging also controls the boat’s power trim system.

The Evinrude E-TEC G2 engines also are equipped with i-Trim.  This feature will automatically trim the engine based on the engine RPM to aid optimize the boat’s performance. At any point, the driver can override this feature with manually trimming the engine. The system also has Fast-Track power trim, which rapidly trims the motor up and out of the water at an angle of 81 degrees. This high lift angle gets the whole drive out of the brine and eliminates corrosion from electrolysis.

The Dual-Axis system is fully-enclosed so corrosive salt water won’t degrade its performance over time.

Corrosion Protection

Because the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 HP was designed for saltwater use, Evinrude increased the use of corrosion resistant material and coatings engine and drive components. A titanium oxide coating is applied to critical surfaces, in combination with electro-deposition paint for the drive housing.
