A groundbreaking advancement in marine technology has been announced with the launch of the Simrad AutoCaptain Autonomous Boating System. This new system introduces a full suite of auto-docking capabilities, including seamless docking, undocking, and precise short-distance maneuvering. Unlike many current systems that only offer assistance, AutoCaptain provides true autonomous control. It was engineered from the ground up with exclusive propulsion integration from Mercury Marine and a dedicated Simrad display app to ensure a unified and effortless experience for every user. This innovation marks a pivotal moment for boating, making complex tasks more manageable for everyone on the water.

The system was introduced during a media presentation at the International Boatbuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) in Tampa, Florida. This reveal is the first commercial solution to emerge from the "Autonomy" pillar of Brunswick's larger ACES strategy. This new technology is set to transform one of the most stressful aspects of boating—docking—by handling difficult maneuvers so boaters can focus on enjoying their time at sea. AutoCaptain is just the beginning, as the same hardware platform is designed to support a growing number of autonomous features that will be released through software updates.

Simrad AutoCaptain Integration

Docking with Confidence

AutoCaptain moves beyond basic assistance by providing real-time, 360-degree situational awareness. The system autonomously handles docking and undocking. It intelligently counteracts obstacles, wind, and currents, ensuring every movement is smooth. While some systems rely on pre-mapped GPS locations, AutoCaptain is designed to work anywhere, adapting dynamically to new environments in real time. This functionality gives boaters the freedom and confidence to explore without limits. The system can even hold the vessel firmly against the dock, giving the crew ample time to prepare lines and fenders.

Designed for Control

Developed in collaboration with Mercury Marine, AutoCaptain integrates exclusively with their advanced propulsion systems and intuitive joystick controls. A network of cameras, cutting-edge propulsion technology, and real-time monitoring through a Simrad display work together to deliver a truly unified experience. Unlike many aftermarket add-ons, this fully integrated system is built directly into the vessel's design, preserving its aesthetics while offering unparalleled precision and ease of use. This purpose-built integration provides a level of control that cannot be matched by piecemeal solutions.

Key Features of Simrad AutoCaptain:

  • Full Autonomous Control: Maneuvers the boat for docking, undocking, and close-quarters movement without user input.
  • Real-Time Situational Awareness: Uses a network of cameras and sensors to detect and adapt to wind, currents, and obstacles.
  • Dynamic Operation: Works anywhere, even in new or unfamiliar marinas, without the need for pre-mapped GPS data.
  • Exclusive Propulsion Integration: Designed to work seamlessly with Mercury Marine's advanced propulsion systems.
  • Future-Ready Platform: The system can be updated with new autonomous features via future software releases.

Simrad AutoCaptain docking

AutoCaptain will make its official debut on Boston Whaler 405 Conquest models at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The system will be available for purchase and on-water demonstrations at the event, marking the beginning of a broader rollout to more boatbuilder partners in the near future.

AutoCaptain will also be showcased at CES 2026 in Las Vegas from January 6-9. After an extensive development phase, this event marks the product's first appearance at CES as a solution ready for market.
