New 50’ Viking Sport Cruiser
Viking Sport Cruisers' new three-stateroom
motoryacht has virtually everything a cruising family could ask for in 50 feet.
The galley down layout has a full-width master, and a shared head for the two guest
staterooms. Thanks to large windows the salon is bright and cheery and has an open
feeling.

The “Back Story” –
The concept was simple: In 1993-4 Viking Yachts, in New Gretna, NJ, wanted to be
able to offer world-class motoryachts to its customers who were not finding this
type of product being offered by American builders. Further, the yachting
market is small and vulnerable and the most prudent business course would be to
build both motoryachts and convertibles. But the creation of a serious motoryacht
line would be costly and take a decade to accomplish. Further, why re-invent the
wheel when Princess Yachts, in Plymouth, England, was already building some of the
best production motoryachts in the world?
For its part, Princess had long been eyeing the large American yacht market but
knew that the process of introducing a new name and marketing apparatus in the U.S.
would be slow, costly and even then success would not be guaranteed.

In 1995 Viking Yachts forged a relationship with Princess Yachts International.
The two companies discovered that their approach to boat building was essentially
the same (make boats strong, seaworthy, functional, don’t cut corners, then make
them stylish, elegant and fast) and the collaboration has flourished over the last
13 years.
Viking knew what the American yacht owner wanted and worked with Princess management
to make changes to the boats in layout and equipment to fit the desires of the U.S.
market. As time went on it became apparent that the yachts that were involved with
the Princess/Viking collaboration were the best of both worlds. It is this “back
story” that is as important as the details of the new boat itself. There is a lot
of expertise and experience behind the pretty pictures.

The Viking 50 Sport Cruiser
The new 50 is a versatile motoryacht that can be used for weekend entertaining,
family vacations or long range cruising. Because she has three staterooms she can
handle a large family or three cruising couples. Her galley-down (with full-height
refer) layout opens the main deck and permits a large settee on the port side.

|
The teak-planked aft deck has lounge seating for another entertaining venue. The
builder says that the swim platform is large enough for a tender or PWC. Note that
there is a molded in stairway to the flying bridge. This makes it easier and more
secure going to the bridge. On the flying bridge is an electric grill, sink, refer, and
wet bar in addition to the helm and settee. A raised sunpad aft has lots of needed
storage space below.

There is nothing like seeing the boat for yourself. As we said, there will only
be a limited number of the 50s coming into the States in 2009, so if you would like
to get a sneak peek before the show, we can arrange that with the folks at Viking
-- sign up here.
