New Simrad Radar Wins Innovation Award

Simrad was honored with the electronics Innovation of the Year Award given at the Miami
Boat Show by the NMMA and BWI. This revolutionary new radar utilizes solid-state
broadband radar technology to provide superior target detection and separation,
extremely low power draw, ease of use, instant tuning, and has “no radiation hazard”
according to the builder. Tim Queeney, editor of Ocean Navigator magazine says,
“This is the most significant advance in radar since World War II.”

Seven members of Boating Writers International, an organization
of marine journalists and writers, formed the judging panel and selected the BR-24
for the prestigious award. The NMMA sponsors the event.

Some Details…

Because of the low power drain and relatively small radome the new unit is ideal
for smaller power boats and sail boats. The company says the new radar releases
10 times less energy than a cell phone, and transmits at 1/20,000th the power of
typical pulse radars on the market -- which means you can mount the array nearly
anywhere without worrying.

Simrad says that with its broadband radar, which as no magnetron, no tuning or adjustment
is ever needed. You can turn it on and it works instantly – no warm-up required.
More important, it has clear target detection close to the unit – down to 1/32 nm.
. According to Simrad, broadband technology eliminates the "main bang" of a pulse
radar — the obscured "dead zone" immediately around the vessel — which interferes
with close target detection. If you have ever been in pea-soup fog when you can
barely see past the bow of your boat you will appreciate this feature.

Simrad’s new radar is compatible with its chartplotter, depth sounder and some other
equipment in its line. Visit their site for details.
