Is Your Boat NMMA Certified?
Report Highlights:
- Boat and Yacht Certification
- NMMA Certified Boat Brands
- ABYC Standards
- ABYC Mission
In the U.S., other than meeting a
few federally mandated minimal USCG requirements, boats are not required by law
to meet any rigorous building standards or even to be inspected. “Let the buyer
beware” was the watchword until the NMMA started its boat inspection and certification
program. Before buying a new or used boat, check to make sure the boat has been Certified
by the NMMA. If it is, then you can have peace of mind when buying and operating
your boat, confident that it meets the gold standard for recreational boat construction
in the U.S. as set down by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC).

NMMA inspectors check compliance with hundreds of standards, including regulations about the installation of the all-important fuel tank connections as shown here. |
The NMMA Certification Program
The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) has developed certification
programs to help manufacturers comply with established standards and safety regulations,
and to help to inform the public of such compliance when purchasing equipment. The
NMMA program certifies that the design meets the standards outlined in the NMMA
Certification Handbook. The manufacturer has the responsibility of assuring that
production units are manufactured in compliance with the certified design.
The boat standards used are based on Standards and Recommended Practices for Small
Craft published by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). Before a builder
or brand can be certified, all boats that that builder makes must be certified as
complying with the required ABYC standards. Most, but not all, of the ABYC standards
are required.
Before buying a new or used boat, find out if it is certified by the NMMA as meeting
ABYC Standards. Not all boats are built to ABYC standards, and truth be known, some
boats are built to almost no standards at all except for the minimum USCG requirements.
About the ABYC
ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council) is a not-for-profit membership organization
that has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building
and repair in the United States for over 50 years. ABYC is actively involved with
the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is a leader in education
for the marine industry, as well as certification programs for marine technicians.
The Council's mission is to develop quality technical practices and engineering
standards for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of small craft with
reference to their safety. ABYC publishes its Standards & Technical Information
Reports for Small Craft.
