This photo was taken October 2015 on Smuttynose Island, which is one of the Isles of Shoals, 8 miles off Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The island is privately owned, but is under a National Fish and Wildlife protective easement, and is administered in summer months by a group of stewards, who stay one week at a time in the historic Samuel Haley house, circa 1745. The island is open to all visitors May-October each year.
