We Test the New V-8 Mercury 4.6L Verados

We Test the New V-8 Mercury 4.6L Verados
The new Mercury V-8 Verados are now the largest-displacement engines in the 250 to 300-hp range. They are 4-stroke and naturally aspirated.

It is not often that a major engine maker introduces a completely new platform of engines, but when it happens it is usually a momentous event. The reason is that years of research and engineering, and tens of millions of dollars have gone into the development of the new engines. They are terribly complicated, they need to be precision-made, yet they must also be assembled quickly and be easy to repair. Most of all they need to be reliable and better than the competition.

The new Mercury 4.6L V-8 Verados are such an engine. They abound with features and solutions to problems such as noise, vibration, lower gear case reliability and ease of owner operation and maintenance. But the question begs – can they perform as well as the in-line 6-cylinder supercharged Verados, and how do they measure up against the competition?

The Hargrave 80 Deal Maker has been set up for ease of handling by an owner/operator. (908 kg) capacity and can be lifted completely clear of the water for improved running efficiency. “Deal Maker” also has five control stations and a Naiad hydraulic bow thruster to simplify operations for the owner/operator of this custom yacht.

Safety Tip

Equip a Personal Watercraft the Right Way

Safety Tip of the Day

Having the right gear, like a compass, can help
a PWC rider avoid problems.

Personal watercraft are fast and fun, but their riders need to think about gearing up the same way other boaters do. From sunblock and proper attire to communications gear, the right equipment can make a big difference. But some items are often forgotten.
