The Cruisers Yachts plant in Oconto, Wisconsin has been building boats since the early 1950s. The company can trace its roots back to 1904, and for most of the company’s 114 years of existence it has been owned privately – one of the keys to its success and longevity.

Recently, a promotional video hit our desk from Cruisers Yachts that has a number of important themes that we rarely talk about. One of its messages is “Made in America.” The U.S. has a long tradition of building recreational boats going back to colonial days. But at the dawn of the 20th century, a fair share of recreational boat building was centered in the Midwest, with Chris-Craft and Thompson being among the early pioneers in production wood boat building.


Thompson – which later evolved into Cruisers Yachts – began building outboard-powered cabin cruisers in the early 1950s. In 1965, the company switched from wood to fiberglass and by the early 1980s it began to offer consumers larger, sleek-designed express cruisers. Today there are fewer than a dozen American production builders still in business in the 35’ to 50’ production “cabin cruiser” market. Cruisers Yachts is a survivor and is happily building more large boats today than ever before.
