MJM 35z:
Outboard Downeaster for Couples
The MJM 35z combines the classic lines of a Downeast-style boat with the performance of outboard power. She is designed primarily as a day boat for cruising around home with friends and family. To that end, her on-deck house has large windows and is open and airy. Below she has all of the amenities needed for a couple making short cruises, but can sleep four including two on convertible bunks in the salon when needed.

Of course, she has a CE Class A rating. At displacement speeds, she has a range of over 2,700 NM, and she can cruise in the high teens when necessary. At 10 knots she gets nearly one mile per gallon; hard to beat in a boat this large. The living areas make lavish use of teak in classic finishes, while belowdecks she offers two- or three-stateroom layouts.

The Sea Ray SDX 270 is a large bowrider that carries her 8'6" (2.59 m) well forward, creating the feel of a deckboat at the bow, though she rides on a deep-vee hull. She can party with up to 15 aboard. Six color schemes are available, and are carried through to the padded, automotive-style dash. She's available in both sterndrive and outboard configurations. Our test boat, powered with a 300-hp Mercruiser 6.2L, topped out at 44.0 mph. Power options to the 380-hp MPI V8 are available.

The Robalo R242EX is a well-equipped center console for fishing large bays or off the beaches, but she also includes family comforts like wraparound seating at the transom, sun-lounge seating with removable backrests at the bow, movable table and Porta-Potti in the console. An interior depth of 28 inches adds security for children and pets. She planed in just 3.5 seconds in our tests, a plus for days when she functions as a watersports towboat, and top speed with the F300 Yamaha was 46.3 mph.
