New Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht | Evinrude’s Hi-Tech Control System | Back Cove 32
This summer, Riviera introduced its new 72 Sport Motor Yacht. She is a remarkable vessel because she can perform so many functions exceedingly well. She has one of the largest cockpits in class and can be fully equipped for big game fishing anywhere in the world. With an optional fuel capacity of 2,774 gal. (10,501 L), a hand-laid hull, and a tested displacement of 143,723 lb. (65,192 kg), she is able to make ocean passages as well as any specialized trawler or LRC. She comes with either three or four staterooms, and her enclosed sky lounge effectively gives her two salons. Our test boat was powered by twin 1900-hp MAN engines. Riviera can only build six of these yachts a year and one of them will be on display at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show this fall.
The Back Cove 32 is a Downeast-inspired express cruiser with a layout and features designed to appeal to a couple. Powered with a single 425-hp Cummins QSB she displayed lots of range at displacement speeds, better than 470 NM at 8 knots, while top speed was 26.0 knots in our test runs. A bow-thruster is standard, easing docking with the single-screw design.
The Evinrude Intelligent Piloting System is a suite of operating features fitted to the E-TEC G2 series outboards that make safe, efficient boat-handling almost intuitive. It includes iDock, Evinrude’s joystick system; iSteer, the integrated power steering; iTrim, which automatically trims the boat; iControl, Evinrude’s digital shift and throttle; and iLink, the mobile interface.
When things are challenging at the inlet, the high freeboard, bow flair, 11’8” (3.56 m) beam and 23-degree deadrise of the new Boston Whaler 380 Outrage are hard to beat. In one of the roughest water tests that BoatTEST has ever conducted, our captain reported that the boat’s forward and amidships deep-V hull shape made the ride remarkably comfortable. He said that when crashing into 4-5 footers, he braced for the slam, but it never came.
The TAHOE® 550 TS is a 19’10” (6.05 m) outboard-powered bowrider competitively priced at $26,995 with a 115 Mercury FourStroke and trailer. With the optional 150-hp XL Mercury FourStroke ($30,495) she delivered a top speed of 48.8 mph in our tests – and that’s the way we recommend powering her for most applications. With a package weight of under 3,300 pounds (1,497 kg) she’s easily towed with mid-size vehicles, and her fold-away trailer tongue allows storage in most garages.
Knowing how to run an outboard is seen by many boaters as a birthright. But there’s more to it than just pushing the throttle forward. Using today’s outboards properly, and maintaining them well, will mean years of reliable service.
