World Cat 280DC-X | Bavaria Yachts is Back | Chaparral 203 Vortex VRX
The World Cat 280DC-X has a pair of 200-hp Yamaha F200 outboards that let her run at 48.5 MPH WOT. But it’s not just about performance – it’s all the amenities the builder incorporated into the catamaran that will sell the family on this boat as well. She’s ready for fun days on the water, and can handle a range of conditions thanks to her stable, soft-riding twin hulls.
The al fresco galley console on the transom of the Cruisers Yachts 42 Cantius is accessed from the swim platform – a good way to get more utility out of a 42’ (12.8 m) boat and free-up room in the cockpit for a large party. It features a sink plus the optional grill in the center, and the three covers open on gas struts when needed. The cockpit door is to port. A hydraulic option is available for the swim platform, as is synthetic teak decking.
The combustion chamber on the Evinrude E-TEC G2 places the spark plug near the injector to optimize power, and the high-pressure direct injectors deliver finely atomized fuel for instantaneous and complete combustion, creating maximum power and torque. It is probably the most high-tech cylinder design in the outboard industry. The design is also noted for fuel efficiency and exceptionally low emissions, something that naturally follows near-complete combustion.

The Chaparral 203 Vortex VRX has a 250-hp Rotax 1.5L supercharged, high-output jet propulsion system that gives her a top speed of 44 mph and little bowrise as she accelerates. But beyond sociable seating fore and aft, it’s the smooth ride thanks to her sharp entry and 19-degree deadrise at the transom. We think of her as the Mercedes of jet boats in her size range because of her fit and finish and amenities.
It was officially announced last week that Bavaria Yachts has been bought out of administration by a private equity fund, and the transaction has been approved by German authorities. The yacht builder went into self-administration in April, 2018 and has been looking for new backers since then. The restructuring also includes the catamaran brand Nautitech, which is built in France. With a total of 800 employees, Bavaria Yachts has one of the largest work forces of any recreational boat builder in the world.
