Long Range Cruiser w/Sportfishing Bones
Yachts with real sportfishing bones are rarely suitable long-range cruisers. Their many small cabins are generally little more than bunk rooms for the guys. Their dining tables often seat only 2-3 people uncomfortably, their cockpits are only good for fishing, and the foredeck has to be clean of any protuberance except a low toe rail, and there can’t be any safety rail as required by ABYC and CE standards, because it doesn’t look cool. Is it any wonder their sales have dropped by half in the last decade?
The Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht was designed from the start to be both a comfortable cruising motoryacht and a well-equipped convertible for sportfishing with the best of them. Her large cockpit can serve double duty as an entertaining area complete with fold-out seats and a galley. There is a mezzanine for formal dining for 10 people and the salon is large and is separated from the galley which is aft. Her foredeck is equipped for double-duty, too, with seats, tables, and lighting that can all be stowed to make way for the tender when under way.

Sun Pad/Chaise Seating Adds Utility
The Chaparral 21 H2O OB Sport is a competitively-priced bowrider but because of her Chaparral DNA, she has a lot of design touches and parts that set her apart from most other entry-level sportboats on the market. For example, the aft sun pad has tilt-up sections on either side to convert the area into chaise-type seating. One side can be his, and the other side hers. The entire assembly lifts up to reveal a very large storage area which was taken up by the engine in the sterndrive version. This becomes an ideal place to stow inflatable tow toys as well as the inflator itself, along with other gear.

Shallow Sport 25 X3:
Running in Skinny Water w/Low Pick-Ups
A hydraulic jackplate is a big plus on a package like the Shallow Sport 25 X3. It allows the outboard engine to be raised up for super skinny water. But if the engine can’t pick up cooling water at that height, the fun won’t last long. Our test boat was powered by an Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 which has a lower unit with two cooling water pickups, one in the nose of the torpedo and one in the strut, above the torpedo and below the AV plate. These low pickups permit the engine to be raised on a jackplate on boats like the Shallow Sport, with a 9.5-inch (24.1 cm) draft.

The swim platform on the Cruisers Yachts 50 Cantius provides access to the grilling console and food prep area, and reminds us of – gulp – shall we say it? – a patio. Let’s call it a working stern deck, instead, and the concept is catching on with more and more builders. Cruisers Yachts has been one of the pioneers of the concept. It creates more space for not only launching watersports from a teak (or, fiberglass) beach, and being a place to stow the tender when under way, but now, increasingly, a place that adds useful square footage for entertaining activities – such as grilling.

Formula is a boutique builder allowing each of its owners to “personalize” their boat in terms of upholstery colors and design, accessories, dash treatment, hull paint and graphics, and other details. The program is called “Formula Flex” and it encourages a myriad of personalization details. Most of the changes to the upholstery, and décor, dash, seating vinyls, including patterns, can be made at no extra cost. As seen here, the interior of the Formula 31 Performance Cruiser provides an impressive feel of space and luxury for a boat of this LOA, thanks in part to 6’4” (1.93 m) of headroom, light colors in the headers, and plenty of lighting. The bed spread gives the boat a homey feel.
