The Everglades 435CC joins the growing ranks of 40-something center consoles intended to satisfy the needs of angers downsizing from battlewagons – or those moving up from smaller rigs. The 435 has a 12’ (3.65 m) beam and our test boat had tested weight of 20,898 lbs. (9,479 kgs.). Her power came from 4x Yamaha 425-hp XTO 5.6 L V8 outboards. Her top speed was 60.0 MPH, or 52.1 knots. Best cruise came at 3000 rpm where she went 24.7 mph, 21.4 knots, burned 34.2 gph for a range of 344 nautical miles. That means she can get out to the canyons in less than two hours, troll all day, and be back before sundown. The optional tower more than doubles the sight distance to the horizon. While she is a premium fishing machine, she also has comfortable seating both fore and aft for entertaining near home.

As a commercial captain, BoatTEST’s chief boat tester Steve Larivee depends on up-to-the-minute, fast-access, easy-reading weather information. He says the SiriusXM Weather he uses on his MFD is a must for serious offshore operation. He also reminds those who boat offshore that cell phones just don’t cut it more than a few miles out—a satellite receiver system is a must. The Cruisers Yachts 338 OB has an impressive helm design in heavy vinyl, carbon fiber and brushed stainless that’s both elegant and functional. Dual fuel gauges are upper left with the optional Raymarine E97 just below, while a trio of multi-function gauges takes the center top position. The wheel is leather-wrapped with color-matched accent stitching. All switches are toggle-type and lighted at the ends when activated. The optional joystick for the twin Mercury 350 Verado’s is just ahead of the shift/throttle on the starboard armrest. She is made by the same company that builds 60-footers and it uses the same materials in the 338.

Flying Bridge with Room to Spare

Leopard 43 PC

One of the advantages of the Leopard 43 PC power catamaran is the room that can be created on her flying bridge because of the 22’1” (6.73 m) beam. To put that in perspective, that is the beam we might expect to find on a 110’ (33.52 m) motoryacht. The result is that virtually all of the flying bridge can be used for entertaining, much the way it is used on a large motoryacht. Also, the upper helm is the preferred command station, given its height and visibility. The added advantage to a cat when doing coastal entertaining is her great stability. It is a boat that does not need stabilizers of any kind.

The sliding door adjacent to the helm of the Jeanneau NC 33 not only gives the operator a good view of the entire starboard side of the boat when docking, it also provides a good airflow while underway on a hot day. The door offers quick access to an amidships cleat, which makes tying up single-handed simple. The asymmetrical layout of the deck encourages docking on the starboard side, where the sidedeck to the bow is the widest.
