Twin 300-hp Rotax 4-TEC Jet Power
With an LOA of 25’, the Scarab 255 Open ID is one of the larger jet-drive boats we’ve tested and it comes with plenty of power to provide an exciting performance. Our test boat was equipped with the largest engine package available, twin 300-hp Rotax 4-TEC supercharged jet systems. The twin engines are compact despite their output, maximizing cockpit space and they come with a thermostat to monitor the engine temperature. Batteries, an exhaust system, and other critical equipment are positioned outboard of the engines to either side, within easy reach.

NW Explorations:
Fun Flotilla to Alaska
One of NW Explorations’ many offerings is flotillas throughout the Pacific Northwest. There is one based in the San Juan Islands of Washington State; one in the Desolation Sound area of British Columbia, Canada; and one in Southeast Alaska. BoatTEST went on the Alaskan flotilla, called Mother Goose – let’s take a closer look. In 2019, the flotilla will cruise from Bellingham, WA through the Inside Passage -1,700 nautical miles north- to Skagway, AK and back. The journey is divided into eight different legs that guests have the opportunity to join. These legs vary in length from one to three weeks. Along the way, boaters will take in the incredible scenery, abundant wildlife and native cultures.

Hatteras GT70:
Beamy, Light, and Fast
From her high bow to her low-fighting cockpit to her tumble home stern quarters, the Hatteras GT70 is as graceful as any custom convertible on the market – a fine iteration of the Carolina/Palm Beach evolution of offshore fishing boats. She has one of the widest beams in class at 21’4” and yet thanks to efficient construction and smart use of materials, she’s one of the lighter convertibles of her size at 120,000 pounds dry. And, with the optional twin 2600-hp MTU’s, she’s fast with a WOT of 41.0 knots at 2450 rpm – this running in three to five-foot seas during our tests. At 2000 rpm, she runs 33 knots and has a range of about 500 NM.

Regal LS4 Surf:
Dedicated to Wake Sports
It’s all about the wake in the Regal LS4 Surf. With the DuoProp Volvo-Penta Forward Drive, the boat planes in 3.5 seconds and the handling response to turns is quick. The combination of drive trim, ballast and trim tabs let the driver fine-tune the wake to suit the preferences of everyone aboard. With the props moved 26” forward, this design is far safer for those in the water than conventional sterndrive setups. Note the step in the hull amidships, part of the FasTrac hull design is aimed at improved performance and fuel efficiency.

Greenline 39 Solar:
Economical Cruising/Easy Docking
Our test Greenline 39 Solar was equipped with two large sheets of photovoltaic cells on the coach roof. The solar power can keep the fridge running and 16,000 BTUs of air conditioning going - so long as there is a sunny day. In the photo above, we see the ship's single 5-blade prop that is connected to a 370-hp Yanmar diesel. At the upper left is the stern thruster. She also has a bow thruster, making docking a non-issue.

World Cat 320DC:
Smooth-Riding Cat w/10’6” Beam
The very sharp forward entry of the twin hulls on the World Cat 320 DC allows her to be driven at a speed through rough water with very little impact felt by those aboard. The tall bows resulting from the arching sheer keep water out of the cockpit. Her 10’6” bow is carried well forward, adding fishing and lounging space up front. Combined with the twin hull design, the broad beam also assures stability in beam seas. And though she’s obviously a very capable offshore performer, she floats in just 16 inches of water, making it easy to visit a private beach or to pull up on the edge of a flat for some inshore fishing.
