Flybridge Safety Rail Heights

Flying Bridge
Flying bridges, such as this example on the Regal 42 Fly we tested in 2017, have their own safety standards for rails to help prevent persons from falling off the upper deck.

A flybridge is a wonderful place to enjoy a day on the water with family and friends. The fresh air of the upper deck and the views on a nice day are hard to beat, and it’s an altogether more enjoyable experience knowing that safety standards exist to prevent accidents.

Boat Building Standards:

Flybridge Rail Heights

ABYC Standards--

  • The outside periphery of flybridges shall be provided with coamings, liferails, deckrails, lifelines, or an enclosure at least 30” (0.76 m) above the deck, or by seatbacks that shall be no less than 24” (0.6 m) above the deck.

Note: The height of flybridge rails is a full 6” (0.15 m) higher than the rails on the weather decks on the main deck, unless that rail is formed by a seatback.

NMMA
The flying bridge on the Cruisers Yachts 54 Fly has a U-shaped settee, the back of which forms the enclosure of the upper deck.
