EdgeWater 230CC | Ilmor-Powered Formula 270 | Regency 220 LE3 Sport
The EdgeWater 230 CC is the smallest center console in the builder’s line. Nevertheless, she is constructed with the same Single Piece Infusion Structural System process as the rest of the boats in the line. Every void between the deck and hull is filled with 100 percent closed cell foam to maximize the boat’s flotation, dampen sound and to give the boat a solid feel when riding fast in sloppy conditions. She has a 20-degree deadrise at the transom, a sharp deadrise forward and hard chines for added stability and to knock down spray. We tested her with a single Yamaha 300-hp engine and recorded a top speed of 51.1 mph, and a most economical cruising speed of 28.5 mph where she got 3.2 statute miles per gallon. Her fiberglass T-Top comes standard, and note how its supports are an integral part of the console itself.
The Cruisers Yachts 39 Express Coupe is ready to take on open water or jumbo yacht wakes with assurance thanks to her sharp forward entry, high freeboard and abundant flair. Our test captain reports that she felt solid when slamming through wakes as shown here, with no rattling hatches or other unusual noises, and the one-piece windshield stayed dry. She has a 16-degree deadrise aft, which gives her better stability in beam seas than boats with greater vee in the bottom.
The Formula 270 Bowrider offers an Ilmor One Drive power package as an option, with the aluminum V8 Corvette block displaying the distinctive painted valve covers of the brand. The MV8 7.4L 483-hp engine is hand-built in Ilmor's Plymouth, Michigan racing headquarters with Ilmor-designed internal components — such as forged crank, rods and pistons. The engine comes standard with closed-cooling and an electronic throttle, and also features a performance-tuned cast aluminum intake and easily accessible service points. Note the amount of space around the engine, allowing easy access for daily checks as well as plenty of room for storage of the bow table and other gear.
The Monte Carlo Yachts 105 takes advantage of carbon fiber, aluminum beams and resin-infused hull construction in a monocoque design that is strong and relatively light — allowing for broad versatility in interior layouts. The 250,000-pound yacht, powered by twin MTU V2000’s that generate 2400 horsepower each through ZF drives, had a best cruise at 2000 rpm of 18.6 knots, at which she burned about 158 gph in company tests. With the standard 3,170-gallon (11,999.75 L) fuel capacity, this gave her a range around 335 NM — 4,226-gallon (15,997 L) tankage is optional. For delivery runs or leisurely cruising at 1000 rpm, she runs at 10.3 knots and has a range over 1400 NM. Top speed was 25.4 knots.
Raising an 11’ (3.4 m) Bimini top by hand isn’t easy, so REGENCY® made sure passengers don’t have to. Pushing a button at the dash raises the 220 LE3 Sport’s Bimini top quickly and efficiently. It lowers just as easily to allow passage under low bridges. An aft-facing camera is installed on aft side of the rear rail in the frame, and the images can be seen on the Lowrance HDS7 screen at the helm — a major feature for tow-sport safety as well as a way to keep an eye out for overtaking traffic.
As a hull nears completion at Intrepid, it is scanned with an infrared camera to detect voids or variations in hull thickness, a step we’ve not seen from any other builders, and one of the reasons for the formidable reputation of the brand as an offshore boat. Similar thought and engineering go into the hullside door — a concept Intrepid pioneered — with impressive reinforcement that uses the structural ribs of the bottom extended up the sidewalls to frame the door opening. The hull is resin-infused, which results in some models that are 20 to 40 percent lighter than similar boats built via hand-laid and rolled fiberglass, according to the company. Boating TipsYamaha Safety Requirements
All boaters are responsible for the safety of the passengers on their boats, and it comes down to having the right gear on board. Be sure to check local regulations, since it’s not a long list to have the basics, but each item is required—safety is not an option. Have a look at this safety video from Yamaha about the minimum requirements, and consider what additions would make sense to carry.
