Stamford Boat Show

The Harbor Point Boat Show is located just five blocks south of I-95 and the Stamford train station, where Amtrak stops. Three local airports also serve Stamford including Westchester Airport, which is one of the largest general aviation hubs in the country. Exotic cars will be on display in addition to boats. Each night there is a live concert. We guarantee no crowds and light traffic. Hours are civilized: 12 noon to 10 pm.

Chaparral 230 SunCoast:
Extended V-Plane Hull Produces Quick Hole Shots
The Chaparral 230 SunCoast is a deckboat design, carrying much of her beam all the way to the bow to provide added seating. She’s rated to carry 12 adults, though of course a load of four to six will give a much better performance in a boat of this size and power. Equipped with a Yamaha F200 outboard, she delivered snappy hole shots of just 3.7 seconds turning a 15” (38 cm) pitch 3-blade prop, a plus for tow sports. The rapid takeoff may in part be the result of the “Extended V-Plane Hull”, which extends the planing surface slightly aft of the engine mount. Top speed was 44.7 mph.

Robust Gearcase w/Quiet Digital Shifting
The Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O. comes with Evinrude’s SLX gearcase designed to house more robust gears yet streamlined to improve hydrodynamic efficiency. The leading-edge slices cleanly through the water, keeping weeds off the two low-water pickups on each side of the lower unit.
A larger anti-ventilation plate helps improve planing times. Evinrude designed the skeg with a camber that eliminates the need for an adjustable trim tab. The gearcase is the same one used on the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300-hp engines, which means it can take lots of abuse. The digital shifting system at the front of the housing provides near-silent, “clunk-free” shifting.

Premium Quality w/a Key Family Feature
The EdgeWater 230CC is ready for serious meat fishermen with a 28-gallon (106 L) aerated and lighted baitwell in the port quarter, and another “ready well” of 12 gallons (45 L) beneath the port quarter seat. This is a boat with rod holders everywhere from bow to stern, 17 in all. For weekending with the kids, the two-tone upholstery throughout provides plenty of comfortable seating and a ski tow pylon pops right out of the transom to elevate the tow rope well above the outboard. Most important of all, and something that truly makes this boat “family-friendly,” is the fact that the boat floats level if swamped because the hull is foam filled. Not many boats will do that, and that fact alone moves her ahead of many brands on the market in our book.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 50:
Airstep 2 Hull Designed for Pod Drives
The new Airstep 2 hull designed to function with pod drives is part of the reworking of the Beneteau Gran Turismo 50’s bottom. The concept is to introduce air under the aft portion of the hull at the step, reducing friction and improving efficiency. We tested her with twin Volvo Penta IPS 600s and found she got on plane in just over 7 seconds and had a top speed of 27.2 knots. Fuel economy remains at 0.6 NMPG from 2600 rpm and 16.7 knots all the way to WOT, allowing the skipper to choose speed based on sea conditions without excessive concern for range. Drop her back to the displacement speed of 6.7 knots and her range extends to better than 1000 NM.

Any boater who has stepped off a boat with an aching back knows poor boat seating may be the reason. Boaters get bounced, banged, bumped and bruised, especially if on long cruises with substandard seats, and that can translate into long-term back pain. Anglers in particular may be subject to posterior problems, since they tend to shoot off over choppy bays at highway speeds regardless of the conditions.
