Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly:

“Stick Steering” in a Luxury Yacht

Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly
Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly

The Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly, the world's first production yacht with a joystick replacing the steering wheel at the main helm, delivers performance and handling similar to other yachts of about the same LOA, features, and power, but the joystick operation simply makes her more fun. She’s powered by the Volvo Penta IPS system with the joystick-steering option, which allows her to make sharper turns than with the conventional wheel found on the flying bridge. With twin Volvo Penta 625-hp IPS800s, she planed in 9 seconds in our tests and had a top speed of 30.0 knots. Best range is achieved at 2000 rpm and 20.8 knots, at which she consumed 41.5 gph for a range of about 262 NM with her 555-gallon (2,101 L) fuel capacity. As with most IPS-powered boats, we found little variation in fuel consumption from about 1750 rpm on up to WOT.

(The optional trailer shown here is an added $2,095.) She has an L-shaped settee, table, and a standard Bimini to provide shade as well as a plush captain's chair with armrests and an adjustable back, but mostly she's about taking the crew out for casual fishing. Baitwells at the bow and on the console front are standard, as are three movable swiveling fishing chairs and rod and tool racks. The textured vinyl deck allows quick washdowns. The optional fishing package includes a bow-mount Minn-Kota 12-volt trolling motor and a Lowrance® HOOK2 4x fishfinder.

BENETEAU Gran Turismo 40
BENETEAU Gran Turismo 40

The main deck of the BENETEAU Gran Turismo 40 is all about bringing the outside in, with a full-width power sunroof and optional power side windows that drop into the bulkhead, eliminating the "greenhouse effect" that sometimes makes boats with lots of glass uncomfortable in hot weather.
