Sirena Yachts 58

Germán Frers designed the Sirena Yachts 58 to be able to cover long distances at displacement speeds, but still be able to get up and run on plane when it’s called for. At 1000 rpm, we recorded 9.0 knots and a fuel burn of 8 gph, resulting in a range of 961 nautical miles. She can cruise country to country in Europe or island hop from North America down to South America. She has a Class A rating and when we encountered chop on test day, her reverse chine effectively knocked down spray, and she sliced through the seas. More...

Trailerable Pocket Cruiser

Regal 26 XO

The Regal 26 XO offers utility for a couple or small family that wants to boat on more than one body of water. Her 8’6” (2.59 m) beam means she can be trailered without a permit in all 50 states. She’s offered with sterndrive or outboard power. When equipped with a Yamaha 300 hp outboard, dry weight is estimated at 6,100 lbs. (2,767 kg), so she can be towed by a full-sized pickup or SUV and even some mid-sized models. Belowdecks, she can sleep four. Unfortunately, there are not many pocket cruisers on the market these days, but this is one of the leading ones. More...

She comes standard with a custom-made trailer, 90-hp Mercury outboard, a trolling motor, two livewells, a Lowrance Hook-4X fishfinder and three movable fishing seats. New for this year are a step to the aft deck and storage forward of the driver’s and companion’s footrests. More...

Formula 400 Super Sport Crossover:

Outboard Cruiser w/a Real Swim Platform

formula-400ssc-071320.png

By mounting the outboard motors on the trailing edge, Formula still provides a usable swim platform.

When boat manufacturers started to make the move toward multiple outboard engines on boats longer than 40’ (12.19 m), one of the biggest questions they needed to answer was how to still provide boaters with access to the water. Formula was among the first to break the code by moving the outboards to the trailing edge of the platform – and then, extending the platform so the sides could provide the linear water access that was available on a sterndrive platform. On the 400 Super Sport Crossover, the platform is 11’3” wide (3.42 m) and it puts the engines 4’7” (1.39 m) abaft the transom. It provides enough deck space for myriad activities. Additionally, placing the outboards farther aft improves performance. The engines have more trim influence and can create more efficient thrust angles. More...

Grady-White Freedom 215:

All-Purpose Dual Console

Grady-White Freedom 215

It could be argued that dual-console boats like the Grady-White Freedom 215 are better suited to running in sloppy conditions than center-consoles this size. One reason for this is the tall tempered-glass windshield, along with the passage door that, when closed, protects cockpit passengers from wind and spray. When fighting a fish, an angler can walk through the windshield to the bow, and the poles are long enough to reach over the driver or companion to fight a fish. She rides on the SeaV2® Hull, which has proven itself over the years. More...

4 Great Whites Tracked off Block Island

great-white-071320.jpeg

The largest of the four sharks was 13’ (3.96 m), which is plenty big enough to inflict serious damage.

The Atlantic Shark Institute announced last Wednesday that it detected four great white sharks in the waters off Block Island. The institute discovered the sharks using an array of seven acoustic receivers set up as part of a long-term study of shark activity near the island, according to Jon Dodd, executive director of the institute.
