BENETEAU Swift Trawler 47:

Affordable Family Trawler

Beneteau Swift Trawler 47

Over the last ten years or so, Beneteau has built more trawler yachts than any other brand and, as they say, has learned a thing or two. By combining functionality and practicality with an affordable price and then constantly improving the breed with new models, it has been able to deliver boats to the marketplace with high utility and good value. In fact, the boats are pretty much in a league of their own because they are not intended to be world cruisers with oceanic capabilities – simply because that’s not what 95% of trawler buyers need. Over the years, Beneteau's designers have refined their version of the trawler concept, which was to create a boat that was designed for displacement-speed work, with the ability to hit 20 knots, or a bit more, for extraordinary circumstances – thus the appellation “Swift Trawler.” With our test boat’s large propellers and bow thruster, she can easily be docked. Adding the stern thruster further facilitated the task. The manufacturer also did a good job insulating the boat’s engine room, and we recorded 81 dbA at 3000 rpm. More...

Industry News

Newport International Boat Show Cancelled

newport-canceled-062920.png

Show management said that stricter COVID-19 guidelines were a leading factor

to the cancellation.

The Newport Exhibition Group announced that it has cancelled the annual boat show, which was scheduled to take place from September 17 to 20, 2020 at the Newport Yachting Center in Newport, RI. In a June 29 press conference, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo placed a cap of 250 people at outdoor events in the state. This effectively forced the shutdown of the show. “The adjusted and stricter COVID guidance regarding events announced from the State was a strong indicator to us that we cannot move forward with a major event in this environment,” Paul O’Reilly, CEO, Newport Restaurant Group and owner of the show, said.

The good news is that Bridgeport, CT – just 100 miles to the southwest of Newport and much closer to Metro New York – will host the exclusive, upscale Steelpointe Yacht and Charter Show from September 24 to 27, 2020. BoatTEST Members can visit the show simply by requesting an invitation.

Manitou 25 SES Flip SHP:

Convertible Seating on a

Performance Pontoon Boat

manitou-25ses-062920.png

The “Flip” stands for the Convertible rear seat.

Manitou offers its 25 SES SHP in five different floorplans, one of which is the “Flip Seat.” It has two large couch-style lounges in the bow and in the stern are twin bench seats. “Flip” the aft seatback forward to fill in the space between the benches to create a large sunpad. For dining, revert to the twin benches and add a table that stores in a dedicated rack under the aft seat. Because of Manitou’s patented tri-hull design and large pontoons, it is one of the best handling high-speed pontoon boats on the market. More...

Livorsi Marine Introduces Quick Pin Cleats

quick-pin-cleat-062920.png

With Quick Pin Cleat, rope lengths can be set once and never have to be touched again.

Unfortunately, most sportboats, deck boats, dual consoles and express cruisers don’t have cleats amidships – right where they are needed, and often in a place hard to reach. While the boat in the image above is a rare exception with a cleat in just the right place, one can readily see the advantage of a “Quick Pin Cleat,” because they can be pre-tied and ready to set. In fact, BoattestLEASING has installed four of them on its Pursuit DC266 right where they are needed. These stainless-steel pin cleats release with the push of a button and can be deployed rapidly to protect a boat when it’s docking or rafting up. The price is $299 for a pack of four. More...

Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport:

Trustworthy First Boat

bostonwhaler-130ss-062920.png

Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport

It could easily be argued that the Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport has launched more on-water careers than any other boat, including that of our own Capt. Steve. When the company redesigned its smallest Super Sport, she got a new bottom with a sharper entry and 13 degrees of deadrise at the transom, which improved the ride. Her deck was also refined to maximize passenger and storage space. She remains unsinkable. More...

Video on Height of Eye at a Cruiser’s Helm

helm-062920.png

A captain’s sightlines should be as clear and unobstructed as possible.

Anyone ever wonder why some boats have better visibility from the helm than others? It could be because some manufacturers do a better job of following ABYC standards than others. Today, we offer a video from Capt. Steve explaining ABYC standards and showing how they are translated into a boat’s design. See the video...
