Growth in Wealth and COVID
Driving a New, Outdoor Lifestyle
The 8th edition of the Wealth-X World Ultra Wealth Report reveals that the population of the world’s wealthiest segment grew by 9.5% to more than 290,000 in 2019. It defines “Ultra High Net Wealth” (UHNW) as individual net worth above $30 million. Individuals with a net worth of $5 to $30 million grew to 2.66 million, and those with a net worth of from $1 to $5 million increased to 22 million people world-wide.
The increase in wealth, together with an unprecedented explosion in consumers quickly switching to outdoor activities such as biking, RV cruising, camping, and boating has resulted in a sea-change in lifestyle that reminds us of Americans in the 1950s. Then, the great outdoors beckoned to people who had spent nearly 20 years “locked-down” by the Great Depression and WWII. The prosperity of the 1950s was channeled into enjoying life outdoors and the general consensus in those days was that leisure time could only expand in the future.
What happened, of course, was just the opposite. By the 2000s when for a variety of economic and sociological reasons, people were working harder and leisure time was becoming increasingly scarce. But, at a single stroke, the COVID-19 Pandemic did what all of the advertising in the world could not, as Americans were forced to reassess their values and lifestyles. Now, living healthier, and spending as much time as possible outdoors, and keeping family close, is the new paradigm. No wonder boat sales spiked this summer due to remarkable highs.
Boat dealers we’ve talked to say they think this is not a bubble, and that boating will once again become a way of life for a whole new group of enthusiasts.

Boating News of the Week: Episode #26
Boat fires are a hazard that affects mostly older boats. Wire insulation chafes or denigrates with time and use. Today we have a remarkable video of what happens when a boat fire gets out of control and destroys new boats. If you’ve ever thought about having a Seakeeper on your boat, Capt. Steve will give you some pointers, and we also explain the remarkable new Siren Marine-CZone lash-up that permits remote monitoring of virtually every electrical system on your boat... plus lots more.
