Absolute Navetta 73:

Versatility Enhanced w/ More Power

absolute-navetta73-091420.jpg

Absolute Navetta 73

When we tested Absolute’s Navetta 73, she was one of the first motoryachts to be powered by twin 1,000-hp Volvo Penta IPS1350s and they turned this long-range cruiser into a more versatile boat with a top speed of 23.0 knots at 2350 rpm. Back off to 17.3 knots at 2000 rpm and she has a fast-cruise range of 0.3 nmpg and 239.1 nautical miles. For a more typical LRC range, the Navetta 73’s best cruise came at 1000 rpm and 8.7 knots, where the 9.0 gph fuel burn translated into 1.1 nmpg and the range extended to 918.8 nm. Sometimes there’s no replacement for adding power to make a yacht more versatile. More...

Fountaine Pajot MY 40:

Designed to Tame Chop

fountaine-pajot-my40-091420.jpg

Fountaine Pajot MY 40

During our test of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40, steady winds whipped up a 2’ to 3’ (.61 m) to .91 m) chop, which gave a good feel for how the boat rides in less-than-ideal conditions. Her twin hulls had narrow entry at the bow and spray rails on each that form chines as they run. As the seas built, we added power and let the knife-like bows cut through the waves. With the engines spaced far apart, the Volvo Penta IPS joystick let us put the boat wherever we wanted in the marina, despite the windage. More...

Leon Slikkers

leon-slikkers-interview.png

A sistership to one of Slikkers’ first fiberglass models displayed at the 1962 Chicago boat show.

Leon Slikkers was one of the first runabout manufacturers in the Midwest to embrace fiberglass, a material that was pioneered in sportboats by Glaspar and Glastron in California and Texas in the mid-1950s. But Glaspar is long gone, and Glastron was recently dropped from Beneteau Group’s roster of boats, leaving Slikkers as one of the few surviving early boat builders – and certainly the only one still working at his boat factory nearly every day.
