The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is a luxury cruising power catamaran from French builder Fountaine Pajot. Because MY 40 is a catamaran, there is a lot of space onboard. Fountaine Pajot made excellent use of the space. There is much more volume than would be possible in a comparable monohull. Her accommodations include three staterooms and two heads, plus storage to hold a months worth of storage throughout the yacht. Built specifically for IPS pod propulsion, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 performed well and presents a surprisingly comfortable, dry ride.

The first impression of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is that it is unconventional even for a power catamaran. Fountaine Pajot wanted the MY 40 to be a true motoryacht with a catamaran hull.
With spray rails forward on each hull that transition to form the hull chines as they carry back, the result is a remarkable dry ride.
The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is designed, engineered, and built to be a luxury performance yacht for cruising adventures and entertaining a crowd. The volume and open floorplan is intended to appeal to those looking for more from a comparable monohull. A power catamaran is intended to provide efficiency, stability, and handling and the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 delivers all three. Designed around dual 370-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS500 diesel engines, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is an entertainment platform with exceptional sea keeping abilities.
The upper helm is mounted on the starboard side of the flybridge on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40. The Flybridge deck, aft cockpit, and forward seating comprise the three al fresco entertainment areas.
The accommodations on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s lower deck is split with the private master stateroom to port and the guest staterooms on the starboard side.
The main deck shows the galley strategically between the aft deck and the salon to conveniently serve both social areas.
Along with the aft deck, the upper flybridge deck and forward seating area are two more al fresco social gathering spaces on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40.
- Twin Volvo Penta IPS500 Propulsion. The dual hull of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is designed around the Volvo Penta D6 IPS500 pod drives.
- Private Port Side Master Stateroom. The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 has a split lower deck layout with the master stateroom with en-suite head on the port side and the guest staterooms on the starboard side.
- Midship Guest Stateroom. The midship guest stateroom has a double berth and hanging locker.
- Forward Guest Stateroom. The forward stateroom has upper and lower bunk-style single berths.
- Shared Guest/Day-Head. The shared guest head compartment doubles as a day head and has a separate shower.
- Full-Featured Galley. The galley has a cooktop, refrigerator, freezer, sink, oven, icemaker, and storage spaces.
- Upper Flybridge Deck. With starboard side upper helm station with joystick controls.
- Full Beam Hydraulic Swim Platform. The swim platform hydraulically lowers to provide water access or tender retrieval.
The sharp bow entry of the twin hulls allowed the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 to cut through the 2' to 3' (.61 m to .91 m) chop on test day.
The Fountaine Pajot MY40 has a length overall of 45’11” (13.98 m), a beam of 19’10” (5.96 m), and a draft of 3’8” (1.12 m). With an empty weight of 30,865 lbs. (15,486 kg) with 100-percent fuel capacity, 50-percent water capacity, and four people onboard, the test Fountaine Pajot MY 40 had an estimated test weight of 34,363 lbs. (15,587 kg).
Top Speed. With twin 370-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS500 pod drive diesel engines running at 3300 rpm, the test boat reached a top speed of 21.3 knots (24.51 mph).
Best Cruise. At 2800 rpm and 15.7 knots (18.07 mph), the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 achieved a 26.9 gph fuel burn that translated to 0.6 nmpg (0.69 mpg) and a range of 196 nautical miles (225.55 statute mils/362.99 kilometers) while still reserving 10-percent of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s 372-gallon (1,400 L) total fuel capacity.
This sort of efficiency is typical of a catamaran with the narrow entry hulls and good hull to length ratios. The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 will remain on plane on down to 10.1 knots (11.62 MPH) but drop her down to a displacement speed of 9 knots (10.36 mph) and the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 will nearly double the range to 476 nm. All this while still holding back a 10-percent reserve of the boats 372-gallon (1,400 L) total fuel capacity.
With the wheel hard over, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 turned virtually flat and remains level with only the seas acting to induce a slight roll.
The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is stable and surprisingly comfortable in the choppy conditions that existed on the day of the test. Spray rails are at each hull and they form the chines as they carry back creating a surprisingly dry ride. Add speed and they become even more effective. The Fountain Pajot MY 40 demonstrated the usual sneeze effect that is typical of catamarans as the waves become trapped between the hulls. However, with the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 it is quite minimal so not a real factor. Also, in typical catamaran fashion, when the seas build, add power and let the narrow entry bows do their job and smoothly cut through.
The tight confines of the marina showed how maneuverable the wide stance of the drives make the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 close in maneuvering stress free. The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 seems to have a pivot point right at the helm which makes maneuvering even easier. Backing the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 into a tight slip is not a factor thanks to the sightline of the port quarter through the hatch for the stairs.
In the open sea way, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 has admirable performance and handling making operating comfortable.
The full-beam swim platform on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is 52” (132.08 cm) deep. A 41” (104.14 cm) deep aft most section can be lowered hydraulically into the water leaving 11” (27.94 cm) full beam fiberglass section with non-skid molded in.

The swim platform is hydraulically lowered down and out exposing a set of stairs on each side of the transom leading to the non-skid section above.
Shown is the starboard side mounted reboarding ladder with four rungs. When the reboarding ladder is deployed with the swim platform in the up position, the ladder only has 17” (43.18 cm) and just two of the rungs in the water.
The transom is asymmetrical with the port side stairs to the aft deck 34” (86.36 cm) wide, considerably wider than the 16” (40.64 cm) wide starboard stairs to the aft deck.
Egress to the aft deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is via port and starboard steps. The spacious aft deck is 17’4” (5.28 m) wide and 6’1/2” (1.98 m) deep. The aft deck has an asymmetrical layout with the 11’2” (3.4 m) long, L-shaped bench seating favoring the starboard side.
The L-shaped bench seating is offset to starboard creating a wider port side stair to the swim platform.
There is storage under the aft bench seating that extends the full length of the bench.
Stainless-steel safety gates on each side of the aft deck positively latch closed and have a clip to hold them in place when open. Note the drink holders on the port side of the aft bench seating.
Built into the starboard side stairway on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is a freshwater, pull-out wand shower.
Both the port and starboard side of the 34” (86.36 cm) high aft deck bulwarks are line handling stations with 12” (30.48 cm) cleat and a warping winch with controls built into the bulwark.
The extended upper flybridge deck creates a protective 7’3” (2.21 m) overhead at the aft most section and 6’9” (2.06 m) overhead at the forward most section of the aft deck. Note the stainless-steel support stanchions.
Fountaine Pajot has provided a 9’5” (2.87 m) wide by 4’7” (1.4 m) tall electrically deployed drop down sunshade.
Storage is in the middle of the aft deck and designed for life raft storage. Owners have the option to use this space for other storage at their discretion.
Under the teak grating at the entrance to the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s galley is the port and starboard fuel fills.
The shore power cord is located under the first step leading to the side decks on the port side of the aft deck.
The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 has a spiral stairway leading to the upper flybridge deck.
The glass partition between the aft deck and galley can be opened to allow for a 4’1” (1.24 m) egress or can be fully opened (shown) to 6’9” (2.06 m), allowing the galley to serve those on the aft deck.
The galley on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is located immediately forward of the aft deck and is accessed through the opening glass partition. There is starboard side counter space with storage above and below. On the port side is a full-sized refrigerator freezer. The overhead in the galley is 6’8” (2.03 m) above the deck.

A double basin stainless-steel sink is under hung on the solid surface countertop in the aft most section of the U-shaped galley counter space.
The forward section of the counter space has a two-burner cooktop, prep area, and trash bin receptacle.
Above, on the starboard side of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s galley is storage cabinets.
Just behind the storage cabinets, mounted above the counter is a convection oven.
Built into the port side of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s galley is the full-sized refrigerator/freezer.
There is under deck storage hatches throughout the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 including the galley deck. A suction cup handle in lieu of latches, or finger holes is used to open the solid hatch.
Salon and Dinette
The salon and dinette on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 are located directly forward of the galley. The salon table can convert from a coffee table to a raised table and opened to make it a full-size dining table.
Moving forward from the galley, there is a 9” step up that transitions the galley to the salon and dinette area. There is a corresponding rise in the overhead that continues the 6’8” (2.03 m) headroom forward.
The carpeting in the salon and galley lays on a wood finished deck. Note the deck storage hatches.
U-shaped couch-style seating surrounds a 29” (73.66 cm) wide table with two sections and a storage drawer below.
Each of the two sections of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s salon table rotate and open.
Fully open the table serves as a 5’11” (1.8 m) long dining table.
Collapsed the table can be electrically lowered to act as a coffee table nice for watching the starboard side pop-up television (not shown).
Side windows provide natural light in the salon. Opening sections on both port and starboard side windows provide ventilation. Note the shelving below the side windows on the port side and the two end tables with recessed tops to keep incidentals in place.
Both of the end tables open and have storage space below. They close with a soft-touch self-closing hinge.
On the starboard side of the salon and dinette is a chart table with a recessed top. Below is the icemaker. The flat panel television (not shown because it had not been installed the day of the test) rises from the outboard section of the table.
The lower helm on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is mounted on the starboard side. Fountaine Pajot has kept the layout of the helm station simplistic relying on a single 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction display that integrates with the engines data to provide digital gauges reducing redundant analog gauges that would clutter the helm’s dash.
There is 5’6” (1.68 m) from the deck to the top of the windshield with 6’8” (2.03 m) of headroom behind the helm console. The dash is a carbon-fiber textured leather panel with zero glare factor.
A fabric brow above the lower helm dash helps to reduce glare to the digital displays.
The single 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction display is mounted on the inboard side of the lower helm dash.
The steering wheel is leather-wrapped with three stainless-steel spokes and a Fountaine Pajot branded hub. Note, the steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base.
On the outboard side of the lower helm dash is the Volvo Penta 7” (17.18 cm) engine monitor display, autopilot, engine start/stops switches, and the rocker switch for defogging the windshield.
Abaft of the helm console are the digital engine controls and IPS joystick mounted on a leather subpanel surrounded by storage space, two drink holders, and a stainless-steel fiddle to help hold things in place.
Below are mounts for remotes including the VHF radio remote and a well-positioned footrest. Note the charging station outlets and light switches.
The lower helm seat is a fabric upholstered double bench seat. The inboard hinges for the single bolster are exposed and may cause concern when entering the helm station.
The helm seat has a single bolster and is mounted on a fixed base. Note the Fusion stereo mounted below.
The starboard side window at the helm has an opening section for ventilation and communication with crew members.
The side decks on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 are 26” (66.04 cm) with safety rails on the outboard side and grab rails on the aft part of the flybridge bonnet on the inboard side of the side decks.

There are 2" (5.08 cm)-high molded in toe rails on the outboard sides with stainless-steel safety rails that are 25” (63.5 cm) above the deck.
Forward on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 there is another al fresco social area that features inboard facing bench seating that converts to two lounge seats with multi-position backrests.
The windshield on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is two 5’4” (1.62 m) wide by 3’8” (1.12 m) tall sections totaling 10’8” (3.25 m) across. The brow extends 2’4” (0.71 m) over the windshield.
With a 12” (30.48 cm) deep footwell between the two 6’8 (2.03 m) long lounge seats they can double as inboard facing bench seats.
The seat backrests on the forward lounge seats are adjustable. Note the drink holders on the inboard sides of the lounge seats.
Under a large hatch in the footwell, there is a spacious storage area that measures 5’9” (1.75 m) wide, 5’ (1.52 m) fore to aft and 3’3” (0.99 m) deep with steps leading in. The windlass remote is stored inside.
A vertical windlass is mounted on the foredeck. The all chain rode leads to the bow roller with a Delta-style anchor. There is a single 12” (30.48 cm) cleat that leads to a chock mounted on the toe rail.
There are deep drainage channels leading to either side of the bow roller and to each forward peak of the foredeck.
The toe rail mounted safety rails are 25” (63.5 cm) above the deck all the way around the bow area. Note the forward 12” 30.48 cm) cleats which are mounted on both the port and starboard sides.
Upper Flybridge Deck
Access to the upper flybridge deck is via a spiral style stairway mount on the aft deck. The upper flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is designed to be a highly social area with a wet bar, dinette and a large sun pad opposite the upper helm station.
Entering the upper flybridge deck through the plexiglass deck hatch on the port side are safety rails surrounding the opening. The hardtop is 7’ (2.13 m) above the deck at the hardtop’s lowest point, the wood accent in the center.
Forward of the upper flybridge deck hatch is a wood accented wet bar with prep area, molded in sink, trash bin receptacle and pull out, drawer-style refrigerator unit.
Behind the entry hatch on the port side of the upper flybridge deck is a space that could be better served with some bench seating.
Forward of the wet bar is a 70” (177.8 cm) long by 52” (132.08 cm) sun pad with pillowed back rests.
The middle sections of the sun pad lift to form backrests for forward facing helm companion seating.
On the starboard side of the upper flybridge deck is U-shaped bench seating that surrounds a solid wood fixed pedestal mounted table.
In the middle of the table are two pop-up LED lamps that illuminate the table’s contents and those seated around the table.
Above, in the hardtop is a 5’ (1.52 m) by 8’ (2.44 m) manually operated sunroof.
Lights are mounted in the hardtop and the hardtop wood accents.
Like the lower helm, the upper helm is also starboard side mounted and equally uncluttered. There is a compass recessed in the helm’s brow in line with the tilt base mounted steering wheel.
On the inboard side of the upper helm is a single 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction display mounted in the dash.
On the outboard side of the dash is a 7” (17.78 cm) Volvo Penta engine monitor display with the engine start stop switches below and a horn rocker switch. Adding a switch for the navigation lights to this helm would make it more practical.
Abaft and to starboard is the engine control binnacle and joystick mounted on a console with recessed storage for incidentals. The VHF remote and spotlight control is mounted below.
A footrest would be a positive addition to the helm console.
The single bucket-style helm seat with bolster (shown in the up position) adjusts fore and aft. Ahead, a tinted plexiglass windscreen wraps around the forward perimeter (not shown).
Lower Deck Companionways
For privacy, Fountaine Pajot made the MY 40 a split plan for the accommodations below with the master stateroom and en-suite head in the port hull and the guest cabins and shared day-head in the starboard hull.
Abaft of the galley refrigerator is companionway stairs that lead down to the master stateroom with en-suite head.
The five steps have protective nonslip material on the leading edge to help avoid mishaps.
The main electrical panel is mounted on the aft most bulkhead in the master companionway.
Below the 40” (101.02 cm) wide by 11.5” (29.23 cm) vertical hull side window is storage. Directly across is space for the owner’s choice of an optional washer dryer, a wine chiller or a refrigerator.
Between the lower helm seat and the chart table is the 2’2” (0.66 cm) wide guest accommodations companionway stairs. Note the leather wrapped handrail.
The steps in the guest accommodations companionway stairway have protective nonslip material on the leading edge to help avoid mishaps.
Built into the inboard bulkhead in the 1’8” (0.51 m) wide guest companionway is a wine chiller opposite the guest/day-head doorway.
There are two guest cabins at each end of the guest accommodations companionway giving a fair amount of privacy for onboard guests. Aft is a guest stateroom with a single double berth and forward is a guest stateroom with the option of a single double berth or upper and lower bunk-style berths. The test boat had the upper and lower berths.
Aft Guest Stateroom. The aft guest stateroom has 6’8” (2.03 m) of headroom at the foot of the double berth. The overhead is 4’9” (1.45 m) over the foot of the berth and 3’5” (1.04 m) over the head of the berth.
The double berth is 79” (200.66 cm) long by 63” (160.02 cm) wide. Two 12-volt fans are overhead and there are gooseneck reading lights on each side of the bed.
The hull side window in the aft guest stateroom is 42” (106.68 cm) wide by 17” (43.18 cm) tall with a 16” (40.64 cm) wide by 6” (15.24 cm) integrated opening port for ventilation.
On the outboard side is a bench seat at the foot of the berth.
Opposite the bench built into the inboard side is a hanging locker.
Forward Guest Stateroom. The forward guest stateroom has 6’8” (2.03 m) of headroom over the single level deck.
Entering the forward guest stateroom there is a bench situated under the 44” (111.76 cm) wide by 13” (33.02 cm) tall hull side window with no ventilation port.
The upper berth is 80” (203.2 cm) long by 32” (81.28 cm) across. The lower berth is 78” (198.12 cm) long by 31” wide (78.74 cm) across. Each berth has a 12-volt fan mounted above and a gooseneck reading light.
Mounted outboard between the forward and aft guest staterooms is the shared guest/day-head.
The vanity has storage below and a recessed sink in the solid surface countertop. Above is a hull side window with an opaque treatment and an integrated opening port for ventilation.
Above the window is a mirror inset in the bulwark paneling.
The walk-in shower has a wand shower head that can be handheld or attached to a fixed mount.
The master stateroom is built into the port side hull with a forward mounted en-suite head making it completely private. There is a 19” (48.26 cm) wide door that separates the master stateroom from the companionway. The headroom is 6’8” (2.03 m) consistent with much of the other spaces throughout the Fountaine Pajot MY 40.
The 78” (198.12 cm) long by 62” (157.48) wide double berth faces the hull side window giving occupants a view through the hull side window with integrated opening port for ventilation.
On each side of the berth are sconce-style lights with end table and upholstered bench seating with shelving on the inboard side forward.
Forward on the outboard side is more shelving with a small desk below and an ottoman-style seat.
The desk opens to reveal a vanity with storage space inside.
Master En-Suite Head
Forward of the master stateroom is the master en-suite with an open concept walk-in shower, starboard side vanity, and separate head compartment.
On the inboard side of the compartment there is a mirror and shelving built over the vanity with storage below the sink built into the countertop.
On the outboard side is an open walk-in shower with a glass partition between the vanity and shower area. The hull side window has an opaque treatment for privacy.
Fully forward is a separate head compartment with a door for privacy.
There are two mechanical spaces that basically mirror each other, one in each hull with the exception of the port side mechanical space that houses the 10 kW generator and swim platform hydraulics.
Shown are the port and starboard mechanical space hatches with gas-assist struts to help keep them open. Note the 1.75” (4.44 cm) thick sound insulation on the 42” (106.68 cm) by 38” (96.52 cm) hatch.
The large openings allow stand up inspections and the ability to move around all sides of the engines.
Access to the mechanical spaces is via a stainless-steel ladder that bows around the Volvo Penta D6 IPS500 diesels. IPS400 diesels are optional.
There is easy access to the pods for servicing. Note the water heater mounted on the outboard side.
On the inboard side are the house batteries mounted securely on a shelf. Abaft of the batteries is the swim platform hydraulics including the manual activation.
On the outboard bulwark are the fuel filters/water separators with crossover that allows for changeout when underway.
Forward of the fuel filters is the generator exhaust and fire suppression system.
Forward are the battery chargers and battery isolators.
Just forward of the port side propulsion diesel and below the battery chargers is the 10 kW generator.
Options to Consider
To have consistent quality and to facilitate a backlog of orders for the MY 40, Fountaine Pajot has limited the number of options. They plan on selling over 90-percent of this model with twin IPS500 propulsion. However, Fountaine Pajot does offer the MY 40 with IPS400 propulsion. Other options to consider include:
- Master companionway options include one of these three options.
- Washer and dryer combination in the master companionway.
- Wine chiller in the master companionway.
- Refrigerator in the master companionway.
- Double berth in the forward guest stateroom in lieu of upper and lower berths.

Unlike many power catamarans, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is not just a sailing catamaran that had the mast removed and larger engines installed. Fountaine Pajot designed, engineered, and built the MY 40 as a dedicated power catamaran specifically for IPS pod propulsion. In addition, Fountaine Pajot afforded the MY 40 with living and entertainment features custom designed from a blank sheet. The result is a well laid out yacht that accommodates with so much interior volume that the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 feels like a much larger yacht. The master suite alone will drive that point home, but there’s so much more to her features that make this yacht so appealing. Fountaine Pajot suggests that the MY 40 is built for customers who say, “lets entertain 20, sleep eight, and cruise two or four in stable comfort.” In addition to luxury and volume, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is at once a fun boat to drive and a comfortable boat to be on while underway. She handles the cruising set quite well and her handling characteristics leave nothing to be desired.
