BoatTEST Captains Take On
“Mission Impossible”
Recently, Sovereign Boat Club (SBC), a division of BoatTEST, discovered that its 37’ center console did not have the speed or the range to do serious day fishing up and down the continental shelf’s canyons. From its base in central New Jersey, SBC wanted the boat to be able to reach canyons 150 nautical miles away off Long Island to off Delaware. Granted, this is a demanding mission, but one SBC wanted to offer its members. The best – and least costly – solution seemed to be to have a set of Sharrow Marine’s new MX-2 props custom-made for the boat.
In order to have those props made from scratch, Sharrow needed the boat to be tested with the standard props and some “benchmark” Sharrow props. The resulting data points would then be collected and fed into Sharrow’s software to create the geometry for custom-made props to deliver peak performance. The testing was done over four days, but in addition to collecting data for Sharrow, BoatTEST's captains also discovered some other important attributes that the Sharrow props have on large center console boats. Sailfish 220 CC:
Rugged Center Console w/Cruising Comforts
Sailfish designed the 220 CC primarily for fishing but didn’t forget the cruising families. In addition to her offshore angling pedigree, she includes dual lounges with flip backrests in the bow. The VDS hull is designed to tame rough water, still be efficient and more stable at rest or trolling. More...

Sea-Doo GTX Limited 300:
Subtle Refinements Improve Stability
To improve GTX Limited 300’s center of gravity, Sea-Doo lowered the watercraft’s stance in the water by 1 ½” (3.8 cm) and widened it by 1” (2.5 cm). The machine’s bottom has a sharper entry at the bow that cleanly blends aft into the strakes and chines. Finally, the trailing edge of the chines is stepped to soften landings when the GTX Limited 300 re-enters the water after launching off a wave. All these enhancements improved handling and overall stability. More...

Boston Whaler 285 Conquest:
Seaworthy Express Fish
Boston Whaler’s 285 Conquest has a closed bow, a high windshield and an integrated hardtop that make her ideal for offshore trips like a run through the Tongue of the Ocean to Nassau or from Montauk through the Race to the Canyons. Even if she encounters angry water, passengers will be protected. She also has a cabin and a small galley for when those trips turn into overnighters. To make her an all-season boat, order the Pilothouse edition. Either way, she also makes a fine cruising boat for a couple who does not want to spend the money on a larger boat. More...

Fleming 55:
LRC Equipped for the Mission
The Fleming 55 is designed and built for long-distance cruising and if a motoryacht is at sea for an extended passage, it’s important for a captain to be able to keep an eye on all the systems. The Böning/Fleming Monitoring system continues to be one of the most sophisticated and all-encompassing vessel-watch technologies for a vessel of this size. Two 15” (38.1 cm) screens at the main helm and an 8” (20.32 cm) display on flying bridge keep the captain apprised of all the motoryachts’ vital signs. More...

Boating Safety
Kids & PFDs:
Start Your Kids Out Right!
Even though a personal flotation device (PFD) is important for safety — and required by law in most states for children under 12 — that’s not always enough to convince them to wear one. Check out these suggestions from the crew at BoatTEST to help children enjoy boating while wearing their PFDs. Note in the image above that all four children are wearing the vest-style PFDs, which we strongly recommend. More...
