A BOAT'S BACKBONE It was not too long ago that builders of small boats used plywood to create the all-important stringers in a boat. Then, the plywood was replaced by quadrilateral foam cores over which the fiberglass was placed. Now, nearly every modern builder fabricates a complete, one-piece stringer grid with gel coat up to double as a liner for the bilge and bins, as well as being the backbone.
