Hinckley 41: Building a New Classic

Hinckley 41 showing woodworking and craftsmanship

Hinckley is noted for producing bespoke yachts with woodworking and overall craftsmanship second to none. The new 41 outboard adds premium performance to the classic line.

The venerable Hinckley brand has been around since 1928 when Benjamin B. Hinckley purchased a small boatyard in Southwest Harbor, ME. They produced their first boat, a 36’ “fisherman motorboat”, in 1932 after Benjamin’s son, Henry R. Hinckley, an engineering graduate from Cornell, took control of the company.  Henry was anything but stodgy, and was experimenting with fiberglass before many in the industry had even heard of it.  He was the first in the industry who not only saw the advantage of waterjet propulsion, but made the brand synonymous with it.  The company also introduced the joystick before is was even a glint in Volvo Penta's eye. He sold the business in 1979.

Like most legacy companies, Hinckley has since been through multiple owners, but all have maintained the premium brand and the reputation for quality builds. Company headquarters are now at Portsmouth, RI.

Hinckley 41 bow

All upholstery is made in house for a flawless fit and exceptional quality control. Note the wood trim carried forward, as well.

More Than a Picnic Boat

The newest iteration, the Hinckley 41, combines the traditional picnic boat lines and legendary company wood-working with the efficiency and power of triple Mercury outboards to produce a dayboat/overnighter that is not only fast but exquisitely crafted, a sure head-turner in any marina worldwide.

It’s reportedly built on the foundation of the twin-jet powered 39 Picnic, retaining the familiar forward seating arrangement as well as much of the layout overall, but offering more underdeck storage due to the outboard power, and much greater WOT speed.

Like other boats in the line, the hull is laminated with infused epoxy resin and high-tech materials such as carbon fiber and Kevlar. Hinckley says the hull is 30% lighter than those built with conventional FRP methods but equally durable.

Hinckley 41 broad and tall Clearview windshield

The broad and tall Clearview windshield provides excellent visibility at the helm, and an overhang shades the shield to reduce glare. Powered sliding side windows along with dual sunroof vents provide plenty of air-flow in the house.

Lots of Power, Lots of Speed

Standard power is triple Mercury Verado 350-hp V10 outboards, which the company says will produce 55 mph WOT speeds with a light load. With the optional 3x 400 Verado’s, the company reports speeds just under 60 mph. We haven't tested it, so we'll have to take their word for it.

The 22-degree deadrise at the transom is intended to give a soft ride in chop.

Legendary Woodworking

Hinckley 41 woodworking at the helm

The woodworking at the helm of the Hinckley 41 and all others in the line is crafted with particular care. Analog gauges complete the classic look, but there’s plenty of space for two large MFD’s as well.

At the helm, the broad and tall ClearView™ windshield ensures uncompromised visibility, providing a commanding vista of the water, enhancing safety and enjoyment of sea views. An overhang shades against glare.

The mullions are trimmed in gloss-finish matched grain wood, like much else throughout the interior. Hinckley offers a choice of real teak, mahogany, American cherry, tulipwood, or red cedar trim.

The woodworking here, as throughout the yacht, is handcrafted by expert joiners, most with decades of experience with the company.

The kitchenette includes a refrigerator drawer under the helm seat, sink and cooktop, while partitioned wine-bottle storage is below the deck.

Comforts Below

While the 41 is primarily a dayboat, she’s also suited for occasional overnights, with accommodations for two in the forward stateroom plus a fully-enclosed head with shower.

Hinckley 41 cabin

The cabin is large enough for a couple to overnight, and the fine joinery continues throughout.

With a maximum beam of almost 13’ (3.9 M) the Hinckley 41 has overnight accommodation for two in a vee bunk as well as plenty of storage in the forward cabin. The head is just aft, on the starboard side.

Hinckley 41 head

The head is to starboard at the foot of the companionway. An enclosed shower is included.

Exterior Class and Comforts

The aft deck blends seamlessly into the helm area, with the kitchenette to starboard. There’s storage for large items like paddleboards in hatches underfoot, and for smaller items under the seating, which wraps around the aft deck to starboard.

Hinckley 41 transom door, swim platform and removable ladder

The transom door, swim platform and removable ladder allow easy access to the water, as well as to the outboards for regular oil checks.

A transom door provides access to the swim platform, which has an adequate catwalk across the front of the engines.

Hinckley 41 storage below the deck

Abundant storage below the deck includes adequate space for paddleboards, dive gear, fenders and more. Note the deep gutters and large gaskets on the hatches.

Hinckley 41 layout

Though the 41 is primarily a day boat, she also includes overnight space for two below in a Vee bunk.
