Princess F62:

Salon w/”Walls” of Glass

princess-f62-081720.png

The salon windows extend below the back of the F62’s furniture, bringing the outside in.

The Princess Yachts F62 replaces two previous models, the 60 and the 64. Her interior volume is increased by 10% compared to the 60, but she also comes within 3% of the 64. A design element that accentuates this volume is the generous use of windows in the salon that let natural light pour in. Our test captain referred to them as “walls of glass.” The transition to the cockpit is a seamless one thanks to hideaway doors and windows. Belowdecks, she has accommodations for six and all the cabins have en suite heads. More...

Formula 40 Performance Cruiser:

IPS Wheels and G5 Style

Formula 40 Performance Cruiser

On its 40 Performance Cruiser, Formula offers plenty of options, plus the Formula Flex program, that ensures an owner can make a personal statement. Further, the custom painted hull pioneered by Formula has a high gloss that is hard to equal. And, the paint eliminates gel coat oxidation and keeps the boat looking like new for the better part of a decade, in most cases. Below, the amenities, joinery and upholstery are what one would expect to find in a G5. The IPS drives and joystick come standard. More...

Summit Motoryachts 54:

New LRC Runs 23.1 Knots

Summit Motoryachts 54

The team at Kadey-Krogen Yachts wanted to combine their ability to create a well-crafted livable yacht with a boat that runs faster than their displacement-speed trawlers, so they turned to Michael Peters Yacht Design to draft a planning hull. The result is Summit Motoryachts, a new division of Kadey-Krogen, and the new Summit 54’, a motoryacht that we have tested with a WOT speed of 23.5 knots, with a 2/3rd load of fuel. The Summit 54 is an important departure for K-K because this vessel is a blend of a long-range cruiser with a modern motoryacht, designed for entertaining and day-outings. She is intended for coastal and island cruising in comfort, but stops short of being a transoceanic vessel, like the displacement Kady-Krogens. Truth be told, the number of people planning on world-ranging cruising is much smaller than it used to be, so K-K is responding by producing a boat to fit the needs of a larger audience. Nevertheless, the K-K LRC culture has had its effect on this design in many ways that make her a good sea boat. More...

Grand Banks 60:

Performance Belies Traditional Look

grandbanks-60-081720.png

Grand Banks 60

Grand Banks says that when its 60’ (18.29 m) semi-displacement hull bottom was tank-tested in Australia, the result was the best-performing monohull less than 100’ (30.48 m) long that the facility had ever evaluated. Her low center of gravity and the 19’2” beam (5.85 m) add to the stability. Advanced construction is hidden behind her planked appearance and includes infused carbon fiber above the waterline. Below, her hull is resin-infused E-glass with Gurit closed-cell foam core. With twin 900-hp Volvo Pentas, she tops 30 knots, according to the builder. More...

CL Yachts CLA 76 Flybridge:

Celebrating 150 Years w/a SOTA Motoryacht

clyachts-cla76fly-081720.jpeg

The CLA 76 Flybridge

The CLA 76 Flybridge is from CL Yachts, the rebranded luxury division of long-time Hong Kong manufacturer Cheoy Lee Shipyards, which is now relocated up the Pearl River in a large modern facility. She’s designed to be a motoryacht that can cruise long distances and sleep eight comfortably in four staterooms or she can day boat and host a party in her large entertaining areas in the aft deck, salon and flying bridge. The CLA 76 Flybridge is also engineered to cruise efficiently at myriad speeds, and she is built light and strong to optimize range.

This year, Cheoy Lee is celebrating its 150th anniversary. The history of this yard is truly fantastic, as it has survived the upheavals that have swept that part of the world during those years. We have periodically visited the shipyard for 40 years, first in Hong Kong, then on Lantau Island near the airport, and now in mainland China. Like family-owned boatyards in the U.S., the company is run by five adult brothers (all but one with engineering degrees, and the other with an MBA from Stanford) who take a fierce pride in the boats they build. Today, their main business is building commercial vessels for companies and countries all over the world, that must meet the strictest international build standards, and that culture permeates their motoryachts. This is an unusual situation for yachts in this size range, to have a strong commercial operation supporting the infrastructure that makes building a recreational motoryacht, both state-of-the-art and competitively priced. And, this is one of the reasons that CL can build large motoryachts as quickly, and as well, as any yard on the planet. More...
