The all-new Absolute 47 Fly will most likely generate some strong opinions with the snub-nose style bow and high freeboard forward. However, no one will argue that the Absolute 47 Fly is a finely built Italian designed yacht with a great deal of attention to detail.

Captain’s Report by Capt. Mark Kellum
The first impression of the Absolute 47 Fly is that it is an unconventional flybridge sport Yacht. With its plumb bow, wide beam carried forward, and high foredeck which houses a unique forward master cabin below.
The Absolute 47 Fly features large stylized hull side windows and main deck side windows. Note, the side deck bulwark has a cutout to let even more light in and greater views out.
Diverting from a conventional sport yacht, Absolute built the 47 Fly as a family-friendly expedition yacht with all of the accoutrements for entertaining guests onboard. With a wide beam of 14’8” (4.48 m) which is carried forward, the Absolute 47 Fly has three staterooms below and a wide-open galley and salon area. The Absolute 47 Fly is designed to be owner-operated with well-equipped upper and lower helm featuring Volvo Penta IPS joystick controls and a progressive bow thruster.
The upper helm and the lower helm are both starboard side mounted on the Absolute 47 Fly. Shown is a factory Absolute 47 Fly without the optional hardtop.
Access to the Absolute 47 Fly is from stairs leading up from the starboard side of the aft deck. The flybridge has U-shaped seating surrounding a solid wood table aft and a large sun pad forward.
The galley on the Absolute 47 Fly is strategically located between the aft cockpit and salon, allowing the galley to easily serve both social areas efficiently.
The lower accommodations deck features a forward master stateroom with en suite head, a VIP stateroom, and a guest stateroom with a day head servicing both.
- Twin Volvo Penta Diesel Propulsion. The test Absolute 47 Fly was powered by 480-horsepower Volvo Penta D6 diesel engines with IPS650 pod drives.
- Forward Master Stateroom. Absolute designed the 47 Fly with a high foredeck and freeboard forward making room to mount the master stateroom forward with a unique angled double berth and single level deck.
- En-Suite Master Head Compartment. The private master head compartment has a separate shower.
- VIP Stateroom. The port side VIP stateroom has a large double berth and large hull side window with an opening portlight for ventilation.
- Day-Head. The lower deck day-head is easily accessed by both the VIP and guest stateroom via the lower deck companionway.
- Full-Featured Galley. The galley has a cooktop, refrigerator, freezer, sink, oven, icemaker, and storage spaces.
- Hydraulic Swim Platform. The swim platform hydraulically lowers to provide water access or tender retrieval.
- Aft Deck. The aft deck is designed to be an al fresco entertainment area with galley service through a service bar from the galley.
- Forward Seating. The forward seating on the Absolute 47 Fly surrounds a table that lowers to form a large sun pad.
- Large Flybridge Deck. The flybridge deck is the main al fresco entertainment area with a summer kitchen, dinette seating, large sun pad, and optional hardtop.
On the water, the Absolute 47 Fly with twin 480-horsepower Volvo Penta D6 IPS650 pod drives delivered a solid performance.
The Absolute 47 Fly has a length overall of 47’12” (14.63 m), a beam of 14’8” (4.48 m), and a draft of 4’1” (1.25 m). With an empty weight of 50,706 lbs. (23,000 kg), 211.34-gallons (800 L) of fuel, 7-gallons (27 L) of water, four people and test equipment onboard, the test Absolute 47 Fly had an estimated weight of 52,820 lbs. (23,958 kg).
Top Speed. With dual 480-horsepower Volvo Penta D6 IPS 650 pod drives at full throttle 3700 rpm, the Absolute 47 Fly reached a top speed of 30.5 mph (49.08 kph).
Best Cruise. At 3600 rpm and 30.0 mph, the Absolute 47 Fly achieved a 45.5 gph (172.24 L) fuel burn that translated to 0.7 mpg and a range of 250 statute miles (402 km) while still reserving 10-percent of the Absolute 47 Fly’s 422.68-gallon (1,600 L) total fuel capacity.
Minimum planing speed was 13.5 mph (2.41 kph). At 600 rpm, the boat ran 3.7 mph (5.95 KPH) and burned 0.7 gph, giving the boat a rating of 5.3 mpg. Bump up to 1000 rpm and the speed goes up to 6.2 mph (10.0 kph) with a fuel burn of 2.1 gph and 3.0 mpg.
During test day, the test Absolute 47 Fly (not shown) faced 15 to 20 knot winds and 2' to 3' seas.
The Absolute 47 Fly pounded a little in head seas and the test captain used the trim tabs to level the boat in a beam sea. With following seas, the Absolute 47 Fly felt smooth and she showed good agility in turns. When close-in maneuvering around the docks, the Absolute 47 Fly’s the outboard mounted joystick and opening side door came in handy.
The upper flybridge deck on the Absolute 470 Fly extends aft to provide a hardtop for the aft deck entertainment area.
The transom’s swim platform on the Absolute 47 Fly is the logical boarding point with stairs molded into both sides of the transom. The hydraulically actuated swim platform lowers to effectively act as a private beach.
The teak covered, full-beam swim platform on the Absolute 47 Fly is 4’9” (1.45 m) deep. The starboard side stairs to the aft deck are 22” (55.88 cm) wide and the port side stairs are 10” (25.4 cm) wide at the narrowest point.
When the swim platform on the Absolute 47 Fly is hydraulically lowered, steps are deployed on the starboard side (green arrow).
Mounted in the first riser in the starboard side transom steps is the inlet for the freshwater and a deck wash connector.
The second transom step on the starboard side flips up to reveal the dual 50-amp shore power cable receptacles. Note the grab rail and nicely executed matching cleat on the starboard transom bulwark.
Mounted in the starboard side transom bulwark is the switches that deploy and retract the two 50-amp shore power cables.
On the starboard side of the transom is storage that continues under the inboard side of the Absolute 47 Fly’s transom.
Absolute added a stylish graphite inset with their designator that embellishes the Absolute 47 Fly’s transom.
Built into the inboard side of the port stairs on the Absolute 47 Fly is a freshwater shower.
Access to the aft deck is via the port and starboard side stairways. The port side is narrow and has a solid safety gate and the starboard side is wide with a stainless steel framed smoked Plexiglas gate. The upper deck provides full cover protection over the aft deck with an overhead of 6’8” (2.03 m). A motorized shade at the trailing edge can provide additional shade as it angles downward from the hardtop.
The Absolute 47 Fly’s aft deck has forward facing transom bench seating that is 8’ (2.44 m) across and a solid teak table that measures 47” (119.38 cm) wide by 28” (71.12 cm) deep, mounted on a single-fixed pedestal.
The Absolute 47 Fly has an electrically deployable sun and privacy shade that lowers from the overhead between the two overhead stanchions.
Under the aft deck bench seating is storage. To port is a deep recessed storage area to keep stowed items in place and to starboard is flush, deck level storage.
On both the port and starboard sides of the aft quarter on the Absolute 47 Fly aft deck are line handling stations with line fairleads, a 9” (22.86 cm) double horned bollard cleat, self-draining recessed storage, and a pedal-operated electrically-actuated warping winch. Shown is the port side line handling station.

In the center of the forward most section of the aft deck is a solid teak machinery space access hatch.
To starboard is the teak covered stairs to the Absolute 47 Fly’s upper flybridge deck.
The Absolute 47 Fly has a glass partition between the aft deck and the galley immediately inside that protects from inclement weather and keeps the air conditioning inside.
A sliding 2’8” (0.81 m) wide by 6’4” (1.93 m) double glass door opens to provide double wide entry to the interior main deck on the Absolute 47 Fly.
The partition further opens by lowering the electrically-actuated galley window. A hinged filler completes an aft deck service bar.
Accent lights extend from the salon to the cockpit overhead, which is 6’8” (2.03 m) off the cockpit deck and is equipped with Fusion stereo speakers (not shown).
Entering from the aft deck through the 2-piece sliding glass partition door to the port side there is an L-shape counter with storage below that doubles as a service bar for those on the aft deck. The cooktop, trash receptacle and sink are built into the solid surface countertop with cabinets mounted above. Built into the lower cabinets are the dishwasher and Bosch microwave/convection oven. On the starboard side there is a counter and a full-size refrigerator with freezer on top.
Entering the galley from the aft deck of the Absolute 47 Fly through the double panel sliding door in the glass partition, the cabin light switches are immediately to port.
On the port side of the Absolute 47 Fly is the solid surface countertop with storage cabinets above.
Built into the countertop is a two-burner stove with pan safety racks, a trash bin receptacle in the forward port corner of the countertop, and a deep stainless steel sink with a faucet equipped with a pull-out wand sprayer.
Below the two-burner stove is storage to the left and the dishwasher on the right.
On the inboard side of the forward countertop is the built Bosch combination microwave and convection oven.
Above the oven is dedicated storage for the Absolute 47 Fly’s flatware.
On the port side of the Absolute 47 Fly’s galley is a prep counter with storage below and the refrigerator/freezer built into matching cabinetry. Note the storage space above the refrigerator cabinet has fiddles to help keep items in place while underway.

Between the galley’s forward port side countertop is a fixed mounted, glass splashguard. Absolute offers an electrically-actuated glass partition that raises and lowers as an option.
Moving forward from the galley to the salon on the Absolute 47 Fly, there is no step up and the deck between it is flush.
The full-beam salon has a U-shaped dinette with a solid wood table to port and an inboard-facing loveseat on the starboard side abaft of the starboard side helm station and side deck door.
Looking forward from the galley to the Absolute 47 Fly’s salon, the large windows provide abundant natural light into the interior.
Between the galley and the salon is an accent side table and shelf unit with fiddles to keep items in place.
The U-shaped lounge seating wraps around a 3’10” (1.17 m) wide by 2’6” (0.76 m) table when fully opened. Note the single pedestal the base is a manual high-low base.
The two leaves, forward and aft fold in to make getting into and out of the lounge seating easier.
To starboard and abaft the helm station in the Absolute 47 Fly salon is a love seat with an angle aft section that mirrors the angle of the accent table between the galley and salon. This keeps the flow open between the two spaces.
Behind the starboard side loveseat is an electrically actuated 42” (106.68 cm) pop-up flat panel television.
Below the starboard side loveseat is organized storage for glassware and stemware.
Additional organized storage under the starboard side loveseat is for plates and bowls.
Note that the extra large windows extend below the counter level and Absolute has provided a cutout in the exterior bulwarks on the side decks for even more light and more views.
On the port side salon window on the Absolute 47 Fly there is an electrically-actuated opening window between two 2’3” (0.79 m) wide by 3’1” (0.94 m) with solid glass fixed panels.
The deck in the salon has a stressed wood look with a machined pattern that creates better traction.
The lower helm is mounted on the starboard side forward in the cabin. It has a compass centered on the fixed mount steering wheel. The windshield consists of two panels with a center support pillar. It spans 9’4” (2.84 m) wide and is 3’4” (1.02 m) high. Along with the large side windows and the galley’s glass partition, the operator has a panoramic view while underway.
The Absolute 47 Fly’s lower helm is equipped with two 15” (38.1 cm) multifunction displays mounted in the dash. Note the two air conditioner vents on each side of the helm console.
Above the dash is a vinyl-wrapped and stitched brow with the compass mounted in line with the steering wheel.
On the inboard side of the helm console is the Volvo Penta engine monitor display, system switches, and the trim tab controls with indicator lights.
The steering wheel on the Absolute 47 Fly’s lower helm is leather wrapped with three stainless steel spokes mounted on a tilt base.
On the outboard side of the lower helm console and to the right of the steering wheel are more system switches, the bow thruster control, engine start-stop switches, the engine control binnacle, joystick control, and VHF radio remote.
Augmented Reality. One of the features on the Absolute 47 Fly test boat was an augmented reality mode on the Raymarine multifunction display that can identify vessels and even contact them if necessary.
Mounted on the hardtop of the flybridge deck is a Raymarine augmented reality camera.
Working in tandem with the augmented reality camera and the AIS system built into the VHF radio, information about vessels such as a boats name, distance, speed, and direction can be displayed on the touchscreen.
There is a pantograph helm door that leads to the starboard side deck perfectly positioned so an operator can maneuver the Absolute 47 Fly from the side deck using the engine controls, joystick, and bow thruster controls that are intentionally outboard mounted on the helm console for that purpose.
The single, wraparound, bucket-style helm seat has a flip-up bolster and diamond-stitching.
Below the helm console, Absolute built in a footrest with the same non-slip stressed wood look decking.
Along the inboard portion of the helm console is a leather wrapped stainless-steel grab rail.
The Absolute 47 Fly has a defroster vent built into the windshield dash. Note the heavy-duty windshield wipers on the exterior of the windshield.
Mounted on the port side of the companionway stairs to the lower deck is the Absolute 47 Fly’s electrical panel.
The protective smoked glass panel lifts on tension hinges to access the DC and AC electrical systems.
Moving forward from either side of the Absolute 47 Fly from the aft deck there are two steps with 6” (15.24 cm) risers. The side decks are 15” (38.1 cm) wide with 30” (76.2 cm) high bulwarks at the aft steps.
Midships, the bulwarks drop down to 12” (30.48 cm) with 30” (76.2 cm) high handrails mounted on the bulwarks. Note the 8” (20.32 cm) midship spring line cleat.
The helm pantographic door opens out and back to allow an operator to maneuver the Absolute 47 Fly from the side deck using the outboard mounted lower helm controls.
To reach the forward seating area on the Absolute 47 Fly, there are two additional steps with 7” (17.78 cm) risers. At this point the outboard bulwarks are 12” (30.48 cm) high with grabrails mounted at 28” (71.12 cm) above the deck.
Forward is another al fresco social area with a manual high-low solid teak table surrounded by seating. Lowering the table and adding an insert cushion creates a large sun pad area.
The forward seating surrounds the solid teak table. There are mounting inserts at the four corners for supports for an optional sunshade system.
With the table lowered and the insert (not shown) in place the al fresco dining area converts to a sun pad.
Forward, the bulwark becomes a 2.5” (6.35 cm) toe-rail and the safety rails come up to 33” (83.82 cm) above the deck.
The foredeck has a vertical windlass with a bow roller and Bruce style anchor. On either side of the bow roller are two 9” (22.86 cm) double horned bollard style cleats.
The all chain anchor rode feeds into the ground tackle locker. Mounted inside the locker is the windlass remote and manual windlass handle. Note the ground tackle locker hatch is being held open with bungie cord. BoatTEST.com’s test captain would like to see gas assist struts to hold the hatch open.
The Absolute 47 Fly's central social gathering space is the large flybridge deck. Access to the upper deck is from the starboard side stairway leading up from the aft deck and through a smoked plexiglass hatch. The test Absolute 47 Fly was equipped with the optional hardtop. A Bimini top is standard.
The option hardtop on the Absolute 47 Fly is mounted on sweeping aft support pillars and forward stainless steel stanchions.
On the port side is helm companion seating and the summer kitchen.
A lid with gas-assist struts opens to the Kenyon electric grill.
Forward of the grill under a cover (shown removed) is a sink with a pull-out spray wand, stainless-steel faucet.
Below the summer kitchen counter is a handrail and doors that open to the refrigerator and icemaker.
Comfortable U-shaped seating surrounds the 57” (144.78 cm) wide by 31” (78.74 cm) deep solid teak table mounted on a single fixed pedestal.
The hardtop has inset LED lighting built into the overhead which is 6’8” (2.03 m) above the upper deck.
The smoked plexiglass stairwell hatch is held in place with two gas-assist struts. The safety rail around the stairwell is 26” (66.04 cm) above the deck.
The sun pad forward on the flybridge deck is 81” (205.74 cm) deep. Multi-position backrests can be raised from the aft-most sections. The wraparound windscreen and stainless steel rails are 12” (30.48 cm) above the pads.
Upper Helm. The upper helm console on the Absolute 47 Fly is mounted on the starboard side of the flybridge deck.
Mounted in the dash of the upper helm console of the test Absolute 47 Fly is a single 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction display. Note, the plexiglass brow is very reflective.
On the inboard side of the upper helm console is a molded in drink holder and the VHF remote. Below the multifunction display is the Fusion stereo control, the windlass control, and systems switches.
On the outboard side of the upper helm console is the Volvo Penta engines monitor display. Below the display is the engines start-stop switches, the trim tap control with indicators and the Volvo Penta joystick control. Below the joystick control is the bow thruster control. Mounted on the armrest is the engine control binnacle and below that is the VHF speaker. Under the dash is a 12-volt receptacle and the fire suppressing system status indicator.
The helm and companion seats are wraparound bucket-style seats with bolsters and diamond-stitching.
The test captain found the lack of an angled footrest created a bit of an uncomfortable foot position when operating from the upper helm.
There is storage inside the top of the helm console. It would be easier to use if the lid opened outward toward the sun pad area.
The accommodation spaces below are accessed by the companionway stairway between the lower helm to starboard and the electrical panel to port.
The atrium-style companionway stairs allow natural light to brighten the lower deck companionway.
Four steps with courtesy lighting lead forward to the port side and down and aft is the VIP stateroom.
The VIP stateroom features a double berth that is 80” (203.2 cm) long and 58” (147.32 cm) across. Headroom is 7’ (2.13 m) at the entry and 4’2” (1.27 m) over the berth.
Throughout the VIP cabin, the headroom varies from 6’5” (1.96 m) on the inboard side of the berth to 6’6” (1.98 m) on the outboard side. Taller passengers will want to be aware of a hard corner in the overhead.
The hull side window is 16” (40.64 cm) tall by 49” (124.46 cm) long with an opening portlight astern. The full width mirror on the aft bulkhead helps make the cabin feel expansive.
On the inboard bulkhead is a full walk-in closet where the interior lights automatically turn on when the door is opened.
The closet interior features an L-shaped countertop with storage below and storage shelves built into the bulkhead.
The multiple deck levels are illuminated with courtesy lights.
Mounted on the forward bulkhead is cabinet style storage with a television mount above.
On the inboard forward bulkhead is a vanity with a mirror mounted above and a full-length mirror on the inboard bulkhead beside the vanity.
The VIP stateroom has the space of a master stateroom. However, because it shares the day-head with the quest stateroom, it is considered a large guest stateroom.
The day-head has a vanity with a vessel sink mounted on a solid surface countertop with storage drawers below. There is an electrically flushing toilet mounted forward.
Above the sink is a mirrored cabinet. Abaft of the vanity is the shower enclosure with a glass door.
There is additional storage above the counter forward.
The shower has an opening portlight mounted above a shelf for shower products with a rail to keep them in place.
Across from the day-head is the guest stateroom with twin single berths. The standing headroom is 5’9” (1.75 m) and the guest stateroom has a full height hanging locker with a mirrored door.
The two single berths measure 76” (193.04 cm) long and 25” (63.50 cm) across with 8” (20.32 cm) between the two berths.
The full height hanging locker is automatically lighted when the door is open.
The large hull side window brings in natural light and outside views while the opening portlight can provide ventilation to the cabin.
Forward Master Stateroom
The layout of the forward master stateroom on the Absolute 47 Fly takes a unique approach with the double berth angled from the starboard side to the center of the cabin. Absolute’s approach allows for the master stateroom deck to be all on one level. It's easier to make up the berth and to get in and out of it.
The forward master stateroom has the double berth with the headboard mounted under the large starboard side window. The berth is 80” (203.02 cm) long by 64” (162.56 cm) across. There is 6’4” (1.93 m) from the deck to the overhead and 4’3” (1.3 m) from the berth to the overhead.
The hull side windows are both 47” (119.38 cm) wide by 22” (55.88 cm) tall. There are opening portlights abaft of the window for ventilation. Shown is the starboard side window.
The port side window reflects the starboard side window with an opening portlight for ventilation abaft of the window. Both hull side windows have privacy shades.
Forward in the bow area is a working surface with an underhung pull-out drawer that can be used as a desk.
The countertop flips up to reveal a mirrored vanity with compartmentalized storage.
There is drawer storage under the double master berth. Note the courtesy lights under the berth.
A walk-in closet with a full-length mirror on the inside of the door is at the foot of the berth on the port side. Note the television mount on the bulkhead.
Inside the walk-in closet is a rod for hanging clothing, shelf storage and storage for the escape hatch ladder.
Under the port side window is a high gloss shelf with open storage below.
En Suite Master Head
To save space, Absolute has taken advantage of sliding pocket doors wherever possible. This is the case in the en suite master head compartment. The en suite master head is on the starboard side aft of the berth.
The master head has a vanity with a vessel sink mounted on a solid surface countertop with a mirrored storage cabinet with additional open storage above.
There are storage drawers below the vanity.
The walk-in shower compartment has a mounted wand style shower head that can be handheld and a glass door.
Inside the shower is an opening portlight for ventilation with a privacy screen above and a shelf for shower products with a rail to keep them in place.
The electric flush toilet is mounted on the inboard bulkhead.
The mechanical space is located under the aft deck and galley. Access is through a hatch in the aft deck with handrails properly positioned for ease of entry. The headroom in the machinery space is 4’7” (1.4 m). There is 42” (106.68 cm) between the two main engines.

The propulsion engines are Volvo Penta inline 6-cylinder diesels.
Aft of the diesel engines are the Volvo Penta IPS650 pod drives.
The Cummins Onan 21.5 kW generator is mounted just forward of the aft bulkhead.
Aft mounted on the port side is the main electrical switches.
Also, on the port side is the Dometic air chiller.
Forward on the port side is the sea chests for the deck drains.
Forward of the diesel engines are the port and starboard fuel tanks with a common sight tube (green arrow) and separate fuel filters (yellow arrows).
To starboard is the fire suppression system, fuel filter for the diesel generator, additional sea chest for deck drains, the water heater, and the hydraulics for the swim platform.
Aft on the starboard side are the shore power cord reels.
Throughout the mechanical spaces, everything is clearly labeled and logically organized.
