Tested by Capt. Chris Kelly
Don’t let the Baja 275 Performance fool you with her race boat looks, she’s also a great day cruiser with a nice cuddy cabin. Without changing perfection, Baja kept the hull design of the 272 and made changes in the deck to create the 275. It’s spacious enough to offer seating for six, easy to handle, and maneuverable enough to turn on a dime.
Cockpit
The cockpit area provides seating for up to six people. It has a well-padded bench seat aft of the operator and navigator chairs. Beneath the bench seat is a storage compartment that’s self-draining. On both sides of the cockpit are armrests, handholds, and drink holders that are neatly integrated into the gunnels of the boat. The operator seat, and the passenger seat have drop down bolsters, which allow both parties to stand or sit while cruising. To port you’ll find a small storage compartment for personal items, and CD player at arm’s reach.
Helm
The helm of the 275 really has the look and feel of a high performance race boat, from the Gaffrig gauges trimmed in the famous Baja purple, to the tilt steering wheel…it’s all there. And whether you’re sitting or standing, the view from the helm is clear and unobstructed. The dash on the 275 is finished with an anti-reflective gray surface to reduce glare, which is a nice feature for those sunny days.
When it comes time to anchor there are two handy steps, and walk-through windshield, which lead up to the bow. A handy stainless grab rail runs up the center of the deck on the bow, and helps to get you there safely. Once up here there’s good non-skid on the deck, and an anchor and rope locker with tie off brackets and stainless latches.
The Engine
The large engine hatch is a prominent feature on this boat, which also doubles as a plush sun pad for your guests. The engine box can be mechanically raised with the push of a button, allowing easy access to the engine compartment. The 425 hp MerCrusier is a large motor, but the engine compartment offers plenty of room to access the engine, battery, trim reservoir, and perform general maintenance duties.
Cabin Layout
Most high performance boats are tight on space in the cabin. The cabin on the 275 Performance is no exception, yet makes remarkable use of the space it does have. The cabin is comfortable and simple and can accommodate two for overnights. The main berth, when lifted has a large storage compartment that can also house a porta potti if needed. Features like a carbon monoxide monitor and lots of storage areas are a few of the nice touches Baja has added.
Specs
The 275 Performance has an overall length of 27 feet 2 inches, and beam of 8 feet 4 inches. With a dry weight of 4,400 lbs. she draws 3 feet 2 inches with the drives up. Like the rest of Baja’s boats the 275 has a nice deep-v. With a deadrise at the transom of 24 degrees she has no problems with sliding through the turns, the 275 holds tight in a fast turn.
The handling of the 275 Performance is impressive as she turned on a dime at slow speed for close quarters maneuvering. The 425 hp MerCruiser 496 MAG HO coupled with the Bravo One drive delivered a top speed of 61.4 mph. We found her best cruise speed to be 40.1 mph, and with a 90-gallon fuel tank her range is 193 miles.
This 27-footer delivered an impressive top speed, all while maintaining her stability and slicing right through the chop. This Performance model makes a great day boat for cruising around with friends or spending an intimate night away.
