Mission
Hampton Yachts' 650 pilothouse yacht is made with a buyer familiar to the yacht market in mind, with much of the specific features and design fitting into a niche created by the rest of their fleet. As Hampton notes, the Hampton 650 has garnered positive attention for those interested in the pilothouse series and not wanting to take on the size of the 680 or 740 models, but needing more space than the 580.
At 65’ (19.8 m), this motoryacht is easily handled by an owner/operator with a moderate amount of experience. In many respects, this size motoryacht is easier to handle than smaller vessels because when docking movements are slower and must be done with deliberation.
Overview
The Hampton 650 has luxury details, storage space, accommodations, and above-and-beyond standards -- a true top-of-the-line aspiration in design, and an execution as good as any yacht on the market in class. Add to that the breadth of customization, its lavish use of wood, fine joinery work, world-class equipment and installations, all at a very competitive purchase price, and we begin to see the compelling nature of the Hampton 650.
The Hampton 650 is right in the middle of the Hampton fleet that runs from 58’ to 73’ -- not too big, not too small, but just right for many people. It is an easy-to-handle yacht for a couple, and we think an ideal size. While it is always desirable to have a larger room so that everyone has more room, there is an important trade off between utility and economics. How often are guests and family aboard and for how long? Is it worth the extra money to have the extra space that will only be used a few times a year?
Also worth considering is availability of dock space, which is better for a 65 than something bigger. And maintenance will be less.
When it comes to seaworthiness, the Hampton 650 is as well found as her larger siblings in our opinion.
Major Features
• Split-Chine Hull – The new hull design, used on a number of Hampton Yachts’ newer models, is a result of 32 years of experience and improvement. It is designed to knock down spray and dampen roll.
• Standard or Personalized Salon Design – Hampton offers free-standing or built-in furniture from standard floor plans or the option to work with their in-house design team to customize to owner preference.
• Full-beam Master Stateroom – Hampton’s design team, both digitally and in-person, has studied and created a space that optimizes utility and comfort.
• Flybridge Helm – The flybridge on the Hampton 650 is open-air and great for a relaxing outdoor day with a great view. The area under the hardtop can be buttoned up with isinglass for three-season boating.
• Garmin rear-view camera – Installed in the cockpit hardtop and viewed from the main deck helm, this camera gives a valuable view when maneuvering and navigating in reverse -- any situation where more visibility can help.
• Three In-Suite Staterooms – Hampton has created three good-sized staterooms, each with a private head and separate stall shower.
Basic Specs
Like all boats, the most important aspect of the Hampton 650 is its basic specs. It is these parameters that define how the boat will behave and what she can be used for. Her beam at 17’8” (5.38 m) is about average for this size and type of vessel and her displacement of 80,500 lbs. (36,590 kgs.) is at the upper end of the spectrum, and her draft of 5’2” (50 cm) (1.57 m) is about average. So in these respects she is very much in line with yachts in this class.
Where she begins to stand out is in some of the details. For example, she carries 1,200 gallons (4,542 L) of fuel, more than many boats this size because she is obviously designed to go longer distances. Likewise, her freshwater tank at 400 gallons (1,514 L) is a bit more than we often see.
CAT Engines. We like the fact that she is powered by twin CAT C12.9 1000-hp diesel engines. CATs probably have the best reputation for dependability. There is a reason that they are widely used in commercial fishing vessels. With 2000-hp the Hampton 650 has the best of both worlds -- the power to get up and go when needed, but the option of cruising along at displacement speeds to cover long distances economically.
Construction
The hull of the Hampton 650 pilothouse is hand laid fiberglass laminate with Kevlar added in strategic places for added strength. The builder says that the first five layers of resin are vinylester resin, notable because many builders stop at two or three. This is the resin that stops water osmosis. The deck and superstructure are cored laminates. The hull and deck are chemically bonded and through bolted every 6” which is standard practice.
Features Inspection
Aft Swim Platform
The aft swim platform features dual aft stainless steel transom gates, which offer a measure of safety for anyone on the swim platform when the boat is under way. The swim platform has fresh and raw water washdown outlets, both installed in the storage locker on the portside of the transom.
There is an aircraft style transom door that gives access to the engine room. The port and starboard cleats have LED lighting mounted above for docking at night.
Access to the cockpit comes via steps both to port and starboard.
Aft Deck
The access stairs have swinging stainless steel entrance gates. The aft deck is entirely covered by an overhead, which has LED lighting. To port and starboard are storage compartments, and the cockpit deck is standard teak.
There is a seating space along the transom that is forward-facing and wrapped around a cherry wood cocktail table that features a compass rose inlay design. The pedestal for the table is also a refrigerator.
The whole area can be wrapped in isinglass, making the aft deck cozy when there is a chill in the air.
On the wing both to port and starboard are helm stations equipped with engine controls and Side Power thrusters. A fold-down 32” LED TV is installed in a fold-down cabinet in the aft deck hardtop standard.
Salon
Moving forward, the salon on the Hampton 650 can be accessed via the tinted glass doors forward the cockpit. These doors don’t slide but instead fold and retract completely, opening up the salon to the outdoor elements if so desired.
The first thing encountered when moving forward through the salon is the social space, which has seating, a bar with a sink surrounded by granite countertop over a wine cooler, and a 42” LED TV recess mounted in the starboard side cabinet.
Beyond the customizability that Hampton offers, there are many custom pieces in the standard design as well -- the cherry entertainment console; the sofa, chairs, carpeting, and countertops. The windows are frameless and give an unobstructed widescreen view of the surroundings. Hunter Douglas blinds come standard and can offer privacy or a respite from the sun.
Overhead design comes in cherry wood and Ultrasuede, and is flanked on all sides by recessed LED lighting.
Galley
The galley on the Hampton 650 is to port and forward of the L-shaped settee in the salon. It sits at the top of three steps and is adjacent to the access stairs up to the flybridge. It has an open U-shaped design with views forward to the pilothouse and aft back to the cockpit.
Hampton offers the choice of either Corian or granite countertop. The sink is large, stainless steel, and has a faucet and cutting board cover -- it sits on the forward arm of the counter space, with a GE Profile electric glass four-burner cooktop on the aft arm of the counter space.
Below the sink is a SubZero 700TCI refrigerator with two freezer drawers and an icemaker. Under the cooktop is a GE Profile 24” oven. Both are flanked by plenty of storage, which features overhead as well, where cabinets surround a GE Profile convection microwave and the overhead LED dimmer lights.
The galley also features heated granite decks, a GE trash compacter, a GE dishwasher, garbage disposal, as well as the all-important dedicated pots-and-pans cabinet.
Forward of the U-shaped galley is a dinette settee, forward-facing with its back up against the galley itself. The settee has an L-shape and is wrapped around a hi-lo cherry wood pedestal table with adjustable flaps. To starboard is a presentation countertop.
Helm
The helm sits in the Hampton 650’s pilothouse, and features two Pompanette Platinum series helm chairs with stainless steel pedestals, adjustable armrests, and luxury upholstery. The three windshield panels each have a wiper and washer, and come with Hunter Douglas blinds as part of the décor allowance. The helm, like the rest of the salon, has reverse-cycle air-chilled air conditioning standard. The decks in the pilothouse are custom made for the Hampton 650 and are tongue and groove style.
Helm Details. The Hampton 650 comes with hydraulic power steering standard, and the steering wheel is a custom cherry and stainless steel piece that gives a great look to the helm design. Above are the instrumentation panels -- centered around the Garmin 7600 series, which includes radar, chart plotter, touch screen monitors, autopilot, GPS, VHF radio, and magnetic compass.
The fuel and water tank gauges are Wema brand, and the windlass remote control was made by Maxwell. The Hampton 650 also comes standard with a stereo system with AM/ FM radio, CD player, and aux plug-in that plays in the pilothouse, salon, and aft deck.
The windows in the pilothouse continue the frameless design from the salon. To port and starboard in the pilothouse are pantograph style, watertight doors for access to the Hampton 650 side decks. To the starboard side of the helm are the access stairs down to the Hampton 650’s accommodations level.
Accommodations Deck
The access stairs from the pilothouse lead down to a foyer/ landing that leads to the accommodations on the lower deck. The foyer has a marble landing space that gives way to the carpeting in each stateroom. Immediately to starboard off the stairs is a Bosch washer/ dryer system. Storage drawers and a cabinet are in this space, and the recessed LED lighting is complimented by indirect lighting in the bulkheads, which are likewise upholstered.
Master Stateroom
The master stateroom is immediately aft of the foyer, and is a full-beam stateroom. The berth is king-sized with storage drawers underneath and a mirrored headboard with built-in reading lights, flanked on either side by night stands with storage. To port and starboard of the berth are mirrored doors that lead to the head and walk-in closet, respectively.
To port is a sofa-settee with custom fabric upholstery and storage underneath, including a safe. The starboard side of the space has a sit-down vanity with storage capability as well. The master also has a cedar-lined hanging locker and a walk-in clothes locker in addition to the larger closet behind the berth.
Hampton’s custom port light design is seen to port and starboard in the master, made from stainless steel and giving natural light, as well as Hunter Douglas blinds installed standard. The overhead LED lighting is on a dimmer switch, and the room has diesel heat outlets, reverse cycle air conditioning, and climate control panel in the stateroom.
The stateroom also comes equipped with a 40” LED TV and an entertainment center in-room that can play CDs, DVDs on the TV, has a radio, and is all hooked up to the stateroom’s surround-sound system.
Overhead is a soffit design with indirect lighting. The whole stateroom is extensively paneled in cherry wood.
Master Head
The master head is private, and accessible only from within the master stateroom. It has a cherry cabinetry with storage just above an under counter sink and Grohe single-lever faucet. The countertop is marble (with options for color choice) as is the floor, which is heated from the Hydronic diesel heating system on the Hampton 650.
The shower is a Grohe brand faucet as well, in a comfortably sized shower stall with a folding shower door, Corian or granite accents (depending on owner choice) and exhaust fan just above. There is a stainless steel port light and the toilet is a Tecma.
VIP Stateroom
The Hampton 650’s VIP stateroom is in the bow, immediately forward from the foyer. The room has an island berth with built-in storage drawers below, as well as a hinged top with plenty of storage underneath. The headboard is mirrored with built-in reading lights.
The VIP stateroom has diesel heat and reverse-cycle air conditioning, both of which can be controlled in-room through the climate control panels. There is an overhead skylight with ocean-air screen, in addition to the opening stainless steel port lights to port and starboard, which also feature ocean air screens.
Storage is, as mentioned, under the berth itself, as well as a cedar-lined hanging storage locker, and port and starboard wraparound cabinets made of cherry wood.
The VIP stateroom is also equipped with entertainment amenities as well -- a 32” LED TV and stereo CD player that has an AM/FM radio and DVD player onboard.
The VIP has its own private head as well, stocked with Grohe faucets, heated granite floors, air conditioning, shower stall, and much of what’s featured in the master head, minus a bit of the space.
Guest Stateroom
The guest room is to port of the foyer, and has one full-sized berth. There is a night stand with drawer, cedar-lined hanging locker, and drawer storage. A 24” LED TV comes standard, as does an AM/FM stereo that can play CDs and DVDs. Air conditioning and diesel heat are standard even for the guest room, with climate control panels on the bulkhead just above the berth.
Guest room passengers have the day head but no private head as in the master and VIP staterooms.
A Pullman berth can be added if desired making the guest cabin suitable for two people.
Flybridge
Access up to the flybridge comes via a staircase in the salon. Abaft the companionway on the Hampton 650 is the boat deck with Brower davit that comes standard. It has power rotation and a 1,200 lb. (544 kg) capacity.
On the aft end of the space are two food-prep stations, with the L-shaped counter space further aft and to port featuring a stainless steel grill with a lift-up lid and storage cabinets below. The countertop is Corian and lined with stainless steel grab rails. Just forward and to port is a food center with Corian countertop, the same stainless steel grab rails, sink and faucet, and U-line refrigerator below with an icemaker too.
To port, opposite the refrigerator food station, is a luxury L-shaped settee with designer cushions, wrapped around a hi-lo fiberglass cocktail table on a stainless steel pedestal.
The flybridge’s helm station has complete engine and instrumentation displays, as well as electronic engine controls featured on the main deck helm. It has the same hydraulic power steering via the stainless steel and cherry wood steering wheel, operated from two Pompanette helm chairs that have adjustable pedestals, armrests, and built-in footrests.
The flybridge has an overhead hardtop made of fiberglass, with a non-glare texture ideal in the glaring sun, and LED lights, with switches at the helm station, that accommodate a night party in the open-air setting the flybridge provides.
The flybridge, like the rest of the Hampton 650, is also equipped for entertainment purposes, with a 32” LED TV installed into a fold-down cabinet in the hardtop, and a radio/ CD/ MP3 player with four stereo speakers and controls at the helm as well.
The decks on the flybridge are non-skid surface throughout.
Bow/ Side Decks
The side decks on the Hampton 650 can be accessed via the aft deck or the pantograph style doors in the pilothouse. They have teak decking and overhead LED lights to improve safety. Stainless steel grab rails on the outside edge port and starboard make sure a trip up to the bow can be done with ease and safety.
The foredeck has a large sun pad with stainless steel grab rails on either side. Forward this sun pad are the anchor locker and windlass.
Power
The engine room on the Hampton 650 has stand-up headroom, LED lights overhead and under the engines themselves, in addition to fans and extra sound insulation in the bulkheads.
Standard power in the Hampton 650 are Caterpillar C-12.9 1000-hp diesel engines.
Performance
The Hampton 650 has a LOA of 66’4” (20.2 m), a beam of 17’8” (5.38 m), and a draft of 5’2” (1.57 m). With an empty weight of 89,500 lbs. (40,596 kg), 50% fuel, and four people onboard, we had an estimated test weight of 95,490 lbs. (43,314 kg).
With twin 1000-hp CAT 12.9 engines turning 38'' Diameter, 38" Pitch, 5 blades, E.A.R 1 props, we reached a top speed of 25.7 mph at 2300 rpm. At that speed, we were burning 100 gph for a range of 277 statute miles.
Best cruise was 23.9 mph at 2150 rpm. At that speed, the fuel burn was reduced to 86.5 gph while still holding back a 10% reserve. We reached time-to-plane in 8.6 seconds and accelerated to 20 mph in 10 seconds.
Options to Consider
The Hampton 650 has, as part of its purchase process, a number of levels of customization available, including an in-depth design of the salon with Hampton’s in-house team. The Hampton 650, for instance, can come with crew quarters in the aft accommodations deck, or an expanded lazarette without the crew quarters. A décor allowance is priced-in to allow for selections in color, texture, and materials.
Price
Listings online for a new Hampton 650 show a $2,950,000 price tag, but this is heavily dependent on options selected. Contact Hampton Yachts for a more accurate quote.
Observations
The Hampton Yachts H650 Pilothouse is a motoryacht designed for serious cruising. She can be operated easily by a couple and we can envision retired couples taking her up the Inside Passage to Alaska, through the Bahamas to the Caribbean, or down Mexico way to Central America.
At displacement speeds, she has long range and because of her 1000-hp CAT engines she has a good turn of speed when that is needed. With her large engine room, fiberglass design, and minimum of exterior teak, she should be easy to maintain.
She is ruggedly constructed and we would not hesitate to take her most anywhere that her range will allow.
