Captain's Report

Riviera 465 SUV

Riviera 465 SUV

Riviera’s new 465 SUV is a feature packed smaller version of the company’s popular 505 SUV.

Brief Summary

Riviera’s SUV line combines the offshore performance and heritage of the company’s flybridge models with the entertaining layout and lower profile of the Sport Yacht lineup.  The SUV is a boat that can do it all… a Sports Utility Vessel.

Mission

This all-new 465 SUV fills a gap between the popular 445 and 505 models.  It continues the luxury, quiet ride and stable performance of the Riviera line with luxury features and trim.  It also satisfies those customers who are attracted to the 505 but don’t feel comfortable operating a 50’+ boat, but may very well be comfortable with a smaller, sub-50’ model with the same amenities.  It also accommodates those buyers who may be length-limited in their slips.

Major Features

·      Single level entertainment zones

·      Alfresco mezzanine level

·      Three stateroom/Two head layout

·      Generous open cockpit with walk around transom

·      Aft galley

·      Forward master stateroom

·      Optional layouts for two guest staterooms to feature twin berths or queen.

·      Twin IPS 800 600-hp pod drive engines.

Performance

The Riviera 465 SUV has a LOA of 52’2” (15.90m), a beam of 15’7” (4.76m) and a draft of 4’4” (1.33m).  With an empty weight of 48,336 lbs. (21,925 kg), 31% fuel and three people onboard, we had an estimated test weight of 51,525 lbs. (23,235 kg).

With the twin 600 hp Volvo Penta IPS 800 pod drive engines run up to 3050 RPM, our speed topped out at 32.3 knots.  Best cruise was only slightly slower at 29.3 knots.  It was at that speed that the 51 GPH fuel burn translated into .6 NMPG and a range of 340.8 nm, all while still holding back a 10% reserve of the boat’s 660-gal (2498.3L) total fuel capacity.

In acceleration tests, we reached planing speed in 5 seconds flat, continued on to 20 MPH in 8.2 seconds and 30 in 16.2.

Boat Inspection

Cockpit

Riviera 465 SUV

The main deck of the 465 reveals 4 main social zones.

We board the 465 SUV from the 5’ (1.52m) deep hydraulically actuated swim platform and enter the cockpit from a walkaround transom.  The gathering room in the cockpit measures in at 13’2” x 4’1” (4.01m x 1.24m) and all decking is teak.  Storage is all around in the bulwarks, in a large in-deck compartment, and there’s also a flip out transom bench seat.

Ahead and to port there’s a module with an electric grill and sink under a hatch.  Storage underneath includes space for a trash receptable.  To starboard, another module features an icemaker and a chill box with freezer plates.  An extended awning attached to the trailing edge of the hardtop and it’s 7’4” (2.23m) above the deck.  An LED cockpit light is underneath.

An electric grill and sink keep the party in the cockpit going.  Ahead we can see the raised mezzanine area and notice the stairs to the side deck.

Mezzanine

Two steps up from the cockpit brings us to the raised mezzanine entertainment zone.  This consists of opposing benches to either side.  To port there’s also an expandable pedestal table and movable ottoman.  To starboard the bench seat converts into a daybed.  Eclectic hatches overhead allow natural light and ventilation into the area.  There is a fixed side glass panel either side of the mezzanine deck with privacy one-way vision screens. Aft of these, Isinglass quarter-panels are to the sides.  We can get Isinglass all around as well as adding screens to the area to add protection while maintaining ventilation.

The starboard side bench converts to a day bed.  Notice the Isinglass quarter-panel just behind the glass panel.

Interior

Galley

As we move to the interior, the galley is located aft and to starboard.  It’s U-shaped with white Corian counters over the dark walnut high gloss finished wood.  An aft window can be opened to combine the inside with the outside and facilitate serving to the mezzanine area.  When closed, a manually operated blind can add privacy.

The galley is located aft and includes all the usual appliances.  Notice the C-Zone control panel just inside the aft window.

To port there’s an extension to the galley with storage above and below additional counter space.  There’s also a separate refrigerated drawer.

Dining

Just ahead and to port is a dining area that consists of a U-shaped settee wrapping around a high-gloss expandable table in two fixed pedestals.  This is all on an elevated platform 10” (25.40 cm) off the main deck.  Ahead is a 42” (106.68 cm) TV on an electric lift.  Natural light comes in from surrounding windows and the forward windshield.  We can supplement the ventilation from the aft door and galley window with opening side windows and a massive overhead sunroof.

There are opening side windows at, and across from, the dining area.

The helm is starboard mounted. A compass is in the center of the console instead of in line with the helm. Not too far offset though. Dual 16” (40.64 cm) displays are flanked by climate control vents.   The console includes vinyl upholstery.  A bolster is upholstered in leather.

The dual helm seats are high-rise and include individual flip bolsters with a single flip armrest.  They adjust fore and aft only.

Accommodations

Riviera 465 SUV

We access the lower deck via a center-mounted companionway.  Below is a three stateroom/two head layout.  Choose from two layouts for the aft/port stateroom.

Master

The master is fully forward and is laid out in the typical “island berth” arrangement.  Steps allow access to both sides.   Headroom is 6’4” (1.93m) leaving 3’3” (.99m) over the berth that measures 74” (187.96cm) x 61” (154.94 cm).  There are hull side windows to port and starboard with storage above.  Two overhead hatches also add to the natural light along with ventilation.  Additional storage is in hanging lockers to port and starboard.  Drawer storage is under the berth, and we can also lift the berth to access still more storage.   A TV is on the aft bulkhead.  A shared head is just outside the master entry, and it serves as a day head as well.  It also has the same features as the master head.

The master stateroom is forward in the 465.  Hull side windows and overhead hatches provide natural light.

The master ensuite includes a walk-in shower, vessel sink and an overhead hatch for ventilation.

Riviera 465 SUV

The VIP is located to port and this one holds the opportunity to have either twin berths or a queen.  Headroom is 7’1” (2.16m) dropping down to 5’11” (1.80m) as we move further in.  the one berth measures 78” (198.12 cm) x 61” (154.94 cm).  There’s a 24” (60.96 cm) TV just ahead of the hullside window.

Riviera 465 SUV

The guest stateroom is to starboard and consists of dual berths.  The headroom upon entering is 7’1” (2.16 m) which drops down due to the salon above.  A step down keeps some of the headroom, but it still only goes down to 4’3” (1.30m).  Each of the berths is 76” (193.04 cm) x 31” (78.74 cm) and they are 13” (33.02 cm) apart.  A hullside window provides natural light.

Observations

This 465 offers a comfortable alternative from the larger 505 to a customer that prefers the similar amenities in a smaller footprint, while still offering an upgrade from the smaller 445.  And while builders often compromise on space in order to fill all those amenities into a tighter space, that just isn’t the case with this all new 465.  Riviera managed to not only maintain the amenities but also the comfort and ergonomics of the larger model.  Basically, from our point of view, the only compromise seems to be giving up the full beam master of the larger model.
