Brief Summary

Go to any flats location or shallow saltwater bay in the southeastern U.S. or the Bahamas and we guarantee that one of the most numerous brands on the water will be Carolina Skiff. For years this builder has produced large numbers of fiberglass fishing boats for protected water. That's its specialty -- along with some of the lowest prices in the industry. The 23 Ultra Elite is a slightly larger version of the Ultra Elite SS 19 and 21 models that have been on the market for some time.

    Snapshot Review--

The Mission of the Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite

Like most of the rest of this builder's boats, the 23 Ultra Elite is intended for bays, flats, rivers and small lakes where a shallow-draft vessel is needed. The company aims to put all of the necessary equipment aboard as standard for fishing, keep the price low, and offer significant value.

Look under the bottom and note the relatively flat sections just behind the bow which give this boat her stability.

    Standard Equipment

The 23 Ultra Elite is designed primarily for fishermen and has most things needed for the hunt. Here is a list of its more important standard equipment--●Insulated storage box in the bow with LED lighting and overboard drain●3-piece removable wraparound bow seating upholstery with back rests●Removable deck table with console storage●Quick disconnect windshield●Hydraulic steering and trim●Fire extinguisher●Porta-Potti●Coaming pads●Leaning post with fold-down back rests●4 flush-mounted rod holders●Fold-down foot rest●100-qt removable cooler●Transom fold down bench seat●Rear insulted bait well with LED light●750 gph aerator●Electric trim tabs●Swim platform●3-tray tackle boxThat list includes only the major items or items usually not on a standard equipment list. If that list seems like a long one, particularly for a price-point boat, it's not your imagination. It is a remarkable list and that is why Carolina Skiff calls this boat an "Ultra Elite." It is loaded.

The angler on the bow looks confident in his footing. Note the bolsters all around the boat's gunwales.

    Stability For Bow Casting

Bay and flats boats are typically fished by two people, one in the bow the other in the stern. Usually stability is no problem in the stern, but the bow can present problems, particularly if there is a long fetch and a breeze. It is for that reason that stability in the bow is a primary concern.

    Form Stability.

Carolina Skiff has designed a 23' boat that carries its underwater chine as far forward as possible to still have a semblance of a conventional bow. This is what gives the boat stability for the angler standing on the narrow deck or the seats forward. Further, her sections go into a low deadrise angle close to the bow and the boat carries that back to the transom. In the pictures on this page the bottom shape is easy to see.

    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
Remember this boat is designed for protected water where sloppy seas are not likely to be encountered. We like the optional canvas T-top because it is effective, lightweight and low-cost.

The base MSRP price of the 23 Ultra Elite without an engine is $35,710. A trailer is not included. The company says the hull has a 5-year warranty.

Snapshots of the 23 Ultra Elite--

    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
Carolina Skiff will rig its boats for any outboard engine brand. We would think that 150-hp would be more than adequate for this boat, but the builder says that it is rated up to 250-hp. We think that much horsepower is not worth the punishment of the incremental weight and added cost.
    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
In rivers, protected bays, in the ICW, and on the flats this is probably all the boat many anglers will ever need.
    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
The 23's fish boxes/coolers/storage bins forward are self-draining and note the drain hole close to the waterline.
    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
The 23 Ultra Elite has both a fold-away transom seat and a jump seat -- both are standard. This is a boat made to be washed down with a hose and put away wet.
    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
Most builders in class have the bow table and pedestal on the options list, and some put the bow cushions there as well. Carolina Skiff's list of standard equipment is impressive. The table stows in the head compartment.
    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
The bow seating without the cushions. With all of this storage there should be no need for a clutter deck. The seat backs are standard.
    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
The head is good-sized for a boat is only 23' LOA. The Porta-Potti is standard. Note that there is a fiberglass liner inside, something often not seen in price-point center console bay boats.
    Carolina Skiff 23 Ultra Elite
Note the shape of the bottom at the transom. The lifting strake to the left of the trim tab helps the boat get on plane and aids stability. The electric Lenco trim tabs have stainless steel rams and are standard.
