Ft. Myers Florida is a great place for boating and also a great place for U.S. Marine to hold their annual dealer meetings. We met them there and tested many of their 2004 models including the 2502 Walkaround from Trophy. This particular one was outfitted in the optional Pro Pack Enhancement and carried the new Sea Foam Green colors on the hull. Next to the white hulls around her, she stood out, but didn’t show dried salt spots like the darker colors tend to.
Fishy Features
Her flared bow keeps you dry through the ruff stuff and her deep-V will slice through the waves getting you to the fishing hole fast and dry in most cases. She has an anchor roller with anchor and line locker in her bow pulpit. Nice wide gunwale tops have deep non-skid surfaces for boarding from anywhere along the sides. Toward the back, the gunwales have two trolling rod holders and two cup holders to keep the beverages close while fishing. Optional gunwale padding insures less bruises while fighting the monster fish. The combing pad option also includes padding for the seats, which I couldn’t imagine doing without on a long ride.
Helm Station
My test model had the optional extended T-top. The Pro Pack optional windshield has wipers to clear the view. In the helm station we had the optional Smart Craft monitoring gauges which make life easy and reliable in monitoring the critical power plants. A Danforth compass, multi-gauges and switches are all within easy reach of the helmsman. This model has a fixed position hydraulic steering package. Cup holders for morning coffee and afternoon cool beverages are mounted at the helm station right and left. Seats swivel and slide adjust for comfort. Under the helm seat is a cooler bungee corded in, and under the companion seat was an optional section with bungee cords to hold tackle boxes. Jump seats behind these seats had nifty adjustable angle backs for more comfort for your fishing buddies along with grab bars for their safety in rough weather.
Cockpit Layout
The cockpit was laid out for serious angling with a Pro Package. Stainless steel toe rails ran along both port and starboard for catch and release action. Along the stern was a flip down bench for riders wanting to face forward rather than backwards underway, and the stern also had a handy system for working the fish. A large lighted baitwell along with a cooler and bait cutting tray and sprayer fit nicely in the width. The swim platform featured a covered telescoping ladder and grab bar for easy boarding from the water.
Cabin
Moving down into the cabin I found about 70” of headroom. The Pro Pack also adds another four rod holders down here for storage. This one had an optional porta-potti stashed under the starboard side bench. Other amenities down here included a Hot and Cold cooler below the steps, small galley with single burner electric top, sink and single handle faucet. The V-berth had nice cushions covering storage with canvas fronts for good air flow around stored items like damp life jackets. There’s also a table to sit around while planning your next attack on the big fish.
Specs
The 2502’s critical measurements were a LOA of 25’0”, 27’3” fully rigged. She carries a beam of 8’6” so you can legally trailer her to your favorite launching spots, unless you are lucky enough to have a boatlift behind your house. She has a 21 degree deadrise and weighs in at 4861 lbs. Hull draft is 21” and total draft is typically 34”. She has a fuel capacity of 163 gallons and a fresh water capacity of 20 gallons.
Performance
The 2502 tore through the intercoastal waters with ease showing she was ready for the more challenging Gulf waters. Too bad we didn’t have the time to take her up on the challenge as her sisters and cousins were waiting for their turn to be tested. She handled well and delivered a pleasant ride, which showed she could get you where you wanted to go without feeling like you had rattled your kidneys the whole way to get there.
The 2502 jumped out of the hole in only 4.2 seconds and was at thirty miles per hour in just 7 seconds. Her cruise proved to be at 4000 rpms which typically will burn about 13 gph at 31.5 mph. This should give you a comfortable fishing range of 365 miles from start to finish. At top speed, she was humming along at 5400 rpms and 42.7 mph, burning about 26 gph. This will give you a full speed range of 243 miles. Sound levels were typical of a fishing machine with a reading of 62 dBa for idle and 89 dBa at cruise. Highest readings were at top speed and registered 93 dBa.
