US Navy Modernizes Torpedoes
With Sharrow Prop Design
Out with old technology – in with the new. The USS Ross DDG-71 seen above is launching a standard Mark 32 surface vessel torpedo with 7-blades, a design that was developed in the 1960s by the US. and Soviet navies. The Sharrow-propelled Mark-54 torpedo can be launched from the same tubes.
The U.S. Navy has awarded a Phase I SBIR contract to Sharrow Engineering to make a new propeller for its Mark-54 Lightweight torpedo. Sharrow will co-develop with Materials Sciences LLC (MSC), a premier provider of composite and non-metallic structures. Under the Inland and International Navigation Rules (Rule 24, paragraph g), a towing vessel and her tow that are severely restricted in their ability to deviate from their course may exhibit the lights for a vessel restricted in its ability to maneuver. This specific provision applies when the length of the tow from the towing vessel to the end of the tow exceeds 200 meters, which is typically the case for a tow astern. The rule aims to give other vessels ample warning of the limited maneuverability of the entire towing operation.
